Now we've gotten rid of head guards and that dodgy points scoring method, have to say an international amateur tournament is a lot more accessible and more fun than a pro card.

Competitive matches, quality action and a clearly identifiable sporting context. Could pro cards work this way?

I attend a fair few cards and most are boring five hour slogs consisting of local lads beating up underfed Eastern Europeans.

Was just watching the Fowler fight and thought exactly the same thing, it now resembles the sport that I know.

The format is the same as it used to be. In the wider context, 'olympic boxing' was a relatively new phenomenon.

Amateur boxing will always trump professional boxing. Real boxing where the best fight the best to be crowned....

....the way it should be!

I'll take a 12 round fight with the potential for a Hagler/Hearns over amateur boxing everyday fingers but i'll respect your love for the amateur scene.

As an amateur coach for 16 years now and a former amateur boxer I am delighted with the changes to amateur boxing.
When I was an amateur in the late 80's through to early 90's the rules and stipulations meant that we trained and boxed in styles that were really complimentary to a future pathway as a pro if you chose to. Coaching kids latterly had become very boring and dispiriting for some of us grounded in old school technical aspects of boxing. It had become akin to boxercise for me. Now the chains have been cast loose it's brilliant. We will get better technical amateurs, better thinkers, better defense, body punching will be back... We will get better all round boxers!

I'm all for the changes... Think its great. However, personally I struggle to get the same level of involvement in an amateur fight that I do in the pro's. All a bit of a rushed thrash for me. Disappointed in the standard I saw in the last Olympics and the commonwealths... Except the women, who seemed more skilled than the men, much to my surprise. Hopefully the changes zoomy highlights will improve the standard in years to come.
