The ones doing it for animal charities are annoying, but then anything to do with an animal charity is a joke. The people who donate to pish like the dogs trust must be loaded to have already been able to donate to all the worthy causes out there. I am not including all conservation efforts in the above sentiments. brits need to really asses the importance of people over dogs.

Super, sad to hear you did not enjoy your foray into Edinburgh as I always enjoy my visits to st andrews. Those charity sellers are only doing a job which I doubt they want to be doing. It is easy enough to look down and keep walking.

I work in Soho and you get a lot of them round here. But sadly the simple fact of the matter is that it works. It would be nice to think that people would just put their hands in their pocket and subscribe anyway but they dont, these guys cajoling people does work. And they are signing up subscriptions which is what the charities need as opposed to infrequent, unpredictable one off donations.
Not saying it doesnt annoy me as well, though they tend to be to suss out who to ignore, but you can understand why they do it.

It's a shame that it takes an army of disingenuous mercenaries with pasted on grins to sign people up. My experience is that they don't know when to ignore people, if I'm looking straight ahead with my ipod in, its a pretty sure bet that I'm not interested in donating to the cats protection league.

Mac, I wasn't visiting Edinburgh, I work here now and have to dodge these bampots every day. I'm sure they love it though, they seem to be the wet liberal types who like to 'make a difference' but are only really lining their own pockets and annoying people by thrusting direct debit forms in their face. They should grow up and get a proper job.

If it's a (gorgeous) burd, try the old..."I've got 2 seconds to talk about charity but 2 hours if you want to do lunch" tends to send them into a speechless confused tailspin!!

Almost as entertaining as dealing with those loathsome Tenerife timeshare salesmen "Hello sir how are you smarm smarm smarm etc etc" You just look at him blankly until he says " Are you English? Speak Englase? German? Swedish?" You then respond "ahoo raheee a rhio a hum de da ra da rhoooo .....Gaelic???

Derails them a treat!!!

No Mac, I don't hate the middle classes, I'm part of it, but they tend to be the ones who preach the plight of the underpriveliged in the condescending way that these pious, smug chuggers do.

St.Andrews to Edinburgh is only about one hour on the train Mac, thought you would have known that from your course design reconnaissance pilgrimages.

It is however a ballache so I shall have to move through soon.

It is a great city to live in you will like it. Not as good for golf as st andrews, you may like to try some of the muni options.

What Mac? What on earth is wrong with the train. Everyone on it is in the same commuting boat as me.
Had a look at the courses in Edinburgh but they are pretty overpriced and not all of a very great quality. However if I ever play Braids I will look out for a guy with a set of hickories and jumble sale Pinnacles.

Will still be keeping my St.Andrews membership going and also a country membership on my other course.
Only takes an hour to drive there for a game.

Why not?, just because I don't read The Guardian and vote labour doesn't mean i object to public transport despite it being overpriced.
I must admit though you do have to sit next to disagreeable people sometimes, and I'd rather be in the seclusion of my car but on the train I can read a book and I'm not stuck in traffic.

The Pilton and sighthill areas of town are the most desirable so you should be looking for a flat within them to really appreciate what the city has to offer.

Mac, I'm not a complete imbecile who has spent his whole life in St.Andrews, I'm well aware what the nice areas are and what the minky neighbourhoods like Sighthill and Pilton are, besides I wouldn't want to be your neighbour being woken up by "The Red Flag" being played every night over your communist pirate radio station.

Mac, you like to give this image of being a tolerant, inclusive individual but you are more judgemental than anyone else.
Anybody who doesn't fit in with your socialist utopia is seen as some sort of person to be disliked and shunned.

i know you were having a laugh Mac, but there's always a hint of a dig in there about people who you might perceive to be of a different social standing to you.

There's nothing wrong with living in Morningside, Ravelston or Barnton, just as there isn't if you live in Sighthill (perish the thought).

In fact I'll probably end up somewhere nice like Morningside, out of interest would your socialist agenda permit you to live there, or is the aspirational attitude contrary to your "all property is theft" beliefs.

I must come off as more aggressive than intended as any non golfing comments on here is meant in the most light hearted of fashion, why I would never judge anyone for where the choose to live.

Honestly I have no idea aboout ravelston or barnton, they sound a little far out though. Also, I like morningside very much.

Super, this is in danger of being on topic - apologies D4S - but can i ask you about St Andrews?
A friend and i are considering a trip up to the area and playing a few courses, one of which would hopefully be the Old Course, just so i can say i've played it.

I understand there's some sort of ballotting system to get on? Any idea how that works? Is it literally just pot luck?

Thanks, in advance

A bit silly really but the following little story made me laugh and I thought I'd share it with you lot.

INNER PEACE

I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me today. We all could probably use more calm in our lives.

Some Doctor on Telly this morning said the way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started; so I had a think about this and then started looking around my house to see if I could find things that I'd started but hadn't finished............

I managed to finish off a bottle Merlot

A bottle of Chardonnay

A bottle of Bailys

A pockage of Prungles

A butle of wum

The res of the chesecke and a bix a chcletz.

The mainder of a bitle of Wisci and mi lust Valiuminun tiblot sciptins

Yu haf idr how bludy fablus I feel rite now. Plezase sned dhis orn to dem yu fee ar in ned ienienr pisss an telum u blody luvum.

I'm actually a little disappointed Sarah isn't standing. That could have made for some quality TV! On the other hand if there is even a one-in-a-million chance she could actually get elected I'm not sure I'd want to play with the future of the world even at those odds

I don't think Palin could withstand the scrutiny; the recent unauthorised biography puts some flesh on long-whispered rumours, and there's been little or no attempt to deny them.
More likely she'll be getting divorced round about election time. Who'll get the children? Whose ever they are??

Lets face it, would we vote for Edwina Currie as PM, no chance, and I think Palin is the American Edwina
