Sita Brahmachari won the £5,000 Waterstone's Children's Book Prize for Artichoke Hearts, the story of a girl's relationship with her ailing grandmother. Brahmachari said she was inspired by her "beautiful and bohemian" mother-in-law, Rosie Harrison, an artist and environmental activist who died in 2005.

The judges praised the book for "tackling the issue of death head on" and for its positive portrayal of the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren.

It is the debut children's novel from Brahmachari, a mother-of-three from north London. The prize was awarded by Anthony Browne, the Children's Laureate, at a ceremony in London.

Sarah Clarke, children's buying manager at Waterstone's, said: "This is the most honest, emotionally affecting children's book I've read for some time. I defy anyone to read it without crying."

that sounds like a barrel of laughs before bedtime!

Nothing like sending your children off to sleep like talking about death of their loved ones!

Having said that, it does sound interesting - especially if there is a family bereavement, it might help.

Will check it out - great link thumbsup
