He's a cross between a court jester and a village idiot so she would love him. Probably lets him run round the grounds with the corgis.

Yes... and also the fact that he has just a touch of olde worlde charm (probably brutally drummed into him from the NY Military Academy) despite his apparently frightening unpredictability in this day and age.

Trump reportedly lost it on a conference call with state governors. That'll help.

A few factors at play here...

1. Trump won the Presidency by appealing to Apple pie families that hate ethnic minorities..."The Wall...Banning Muslims etc..."...Saying he was going to build an old America and make America great again...Johnson's civil rights act didn't arrive till the 1960s....So we can guess what old America these families had in mind.

Trump needs to consolidate his vote...And it proved it can work.

2. Trying to prove he is a tough...strong leader in Election year...Age old formula dating back to old Hickory Jackson talking tough back in the 1820s when he stunned Quincy Adams....Quincy was the first President not to win a second term.

3. He is desperate to change the story from Covid.

Bets on a good sized spike in infections in 2 -3 weeks following all the protests?

Trump desperately needs an identifiable enemy to blame

It wouldn't surprise me to see large spikes across many areas where these protests and riots have occurred either, lost.

I've just heard Susan Rice (Fmr National Security Adviser to Obama) saying these extreme protesters are "right out of the Russian playbook".
She also stated that "they have fomented some of the extremists on both sides" and "most likely have funded the whole thing." Not sure that there is any evidence of that but her comment will only muddy the political waters even more. I believe it's a cheap shot below the belt in essence.

If I were the Don, I'd almost be thinking of throwing one 'out of left field' now instead of increasing the National Guard numbers across all of the hot spots; as we all know too well that such an action will only end in more property destruction, possible deaths and even more tears from innocent folk.

So, here's my simple 2-point plan - in the form of an announcement which could be made:

1. Commence the baseball season in a week or two from now (after the players have warmed up) and get people's minds onto their favourite summer pastime and off the streets. Even those who couldn't care a toss about sport; maybe some of the vibe will rub off (esp. when they see someone else distracted by the game) and they'll lose some steam. Start crowd-free at first then slowly add some spectators. Hell... I'd even give away free tickets to some riotous punks or let them sit in the dug-out area with their heroes... at a safe distance of course. Even consider some watered down charity games with essential service workers 'drafted' into ML franchises for a hit or a pitch before an actual game. Or even have a Blue v Red or a "One for George" game for his grieving family members. No damn celebrities... just some real people involved.

2. Open all the major public institutions such as museums, libraries and art galleries again. Safe distancing applied... have them spread out at first before slowly increasing the numbers if things go well. I'd also encourage giving free passes to some of the looters and anarchists and see if they might learn something about history and the achievements and sacrifices those before them have made. It would free up some jail space too.

You could have armies of medical folk checking patrons, testing for any signs. I think this would be probably seen as risky to some but given that there are already 10s of thousands rampaging around right now  - why not try to show some sympathy to the ordinary folk and let them know the government really does care for their well being. It's been a huge shock to most of them (and us) and on the whole most have behaved responsibly.

I'll probably get cries of... 'too idealist', 'tell him he's dreaming', 'it would be seen as some dastardly cynical move by Trump', etc... but heck, I reckon it's got to a tipping point. Just go all in with reopening public institutions, social leisure activities and have whatever's needed in place to deal with any fallout. Something's got to be done urgently right now to disrupt the disrupters and try and get back to some semblance of normal life again.

Then if it should somehow backfire big time - we all know who to blame. It's worth a shot I reckon.

A much better speech from Joe Biden today in Philadelphia. He's talking some sense at least, sounds more coherent and he's lost that mask. Some good historical quotes referenced but he still does waffle on a bit. Maybe that's OK but he needs to get to his pertinent points quicker and with more punch to really cut his message through to the masses.

The danger for Trump, as far as I can see it, is that he doesn't seem to be trying (or to have tried at any point) to appeal to anyone who didn't vote for him last time, when he was an unknown quantity and still lost the popular vote by three million. I can't imagine there's many Americans who will vote for him now who didn't vote for him four years ago - and plenty who regret giving him a chance last time round.

This assumes that the election will be free and fair, and its result accepted, which after yesterday might not be a given.

Worth remembering that 'Black lives matter' was formed under the Obama administration...the one where the Black president oversaw a huge drop in equity for black families across the nation...Average black home equity dropped by $17,000....

The administration that saw more black people on welfare stamps than any other time in history while Wall street got 29 trillion in cash and loans..

Like with Jack Johnson the first black Heavyweight champion....He was black but no friend to People of his own color..

Very little time for obama as he did very little......"Change we can believe in"....Yeah right..

He was full of crap.

Post by Dolphin Ziggler Tue 02 Jun 2020, 6:44 pm

I got racially abused today, which in the midst of all this made me feel very depressed. I'm white, bit of a tan I guess and a beard, but some teenagers at the park in my little village called me "p**i" and "Mustafa" because I was there kicking a ball around on my own. I gave them very little back, other than to tell them to shut up, and refused to leave as they kept shouting abuse at me.

God only knows how that feels to have as part of your everyday life. Even if you aren't abused daily, the looks, the imposition, whatever else I'll never truly understand as a white man from a reasonably middle class English family.

I was so angry, but I'm also 31, a teacher and want to head back to Australia when all this lockdown is done. I've never been a violent person anyway, but any sort of physical altercation likely ends my career and any chance of returning to my home and my partner in Australia.

The thoughts of retribution in my mind were not pure, that's for sure, and this is a standout incident in my life, not something that I can sadly expect to live with. And yet I don't know what I do. Report it to the police? They'll likely do very little and then these louts know it was me and will probably know where my parents live and could easily make their lives a living hell. But then am I allowing such horrific attitudes to exist and being a weak ally to others if I just let it go?

I wanted to watch those little Poopie burn for having the confidence to abuse someone like that over race, and if I wanted that after one incident, I can only imagine the pent up frustration and rage inside when it's affecting your whole life.

That's shocking, Flipper. My best advice is to try and not take it to heart and just see them as a bunch of ignorant teenagers... sad as that fact is.
You did very well not to react more strongly as you never know what they might have been carrying.

When we had the infamous 2005 race riots here a friend remarked to me: "be careful...  because you're not the typical Australian stereotype (with regards to appearance) someone might mistake you for 'one of the enemy'". That really shocked me. Firstly along the lines of what you experienced regarding other people's perceptions of yourself (it had never occurred to me that I looked 'exotic' compared to other locals in a cultural/appearance sense) and secondly that they had even thought that I would go out of my way (from a safe area) and directly into a scene of social disturbance.

We're missing you already, Flipper. This country needs more people like you! (intelligent, football playing teachers with a good tan and beard)
Hope the wife is coping well in your absence... and may both of you remain strong and keep on weathering this unexpected storm.

Apart from that - all's very well here. Cool mornings, calm and sunny days.

(My apologies for being off topic slightly...)

Fivethreeeight's last poll, had Biden winning Minnesota by a reasonably comfortable distance. fox News has Biden winning Wisconsin by 9% (polled yesrterday), and Michigan is swinging Biden, but Trump is only just behind. Florida also seems to be just about blue. Biden needs to win three out of five of these. They're so close though, that you'd think the debates, when we will realise just how far gone Biden really is, probably swings it back to Trump. Trump isn't a noted debater, but you'd think it's gonna be ugly for old Joe on the stage.

Cuomo would win a landslide....Klobuchar...Sanders..Michelle Obama and just about any Democrat would too apart from Clinton and Biden....

GOP will be ruthless in exposing Biden's mental deficiencies...Heaven help him if the three debates in Sept/October take place..

Do I think Biden will win ?? at the moment yes.

But the fact that Trump after this nightmare is in with a shot is down to the fact like Right wing Labour over here...The Dems would rather have a Conservative than a radical Socialist.

If Trump wins the Democrat establishment need to own it !!...

The oddsmakers currently have Biden a 56% chance to win and Trump 44%..

Just to see the dividing lines when it comes to voting in the US...(Pew research)

White evangelicals............GOP 78 %....Dem 17%
White non college men......GOP 62%.....Dem  30%
Rural Southerners.............GOP 60%......Dem 33%
Weekly religious attenders..GOP 57%.....Dem 37%
Gen X Men........................GOP 53%.....Dem 39%

White college Women.........GOP 34%.....Dem 62%
Hispanic catholic................GOP 27%.....Dem 68%
Not religious......................GOP 24%.....Dem 67%
Urban North easterners.......GOP 23%.....Dem 72%
Black Women.....................GOP 7%......Dem 87%

A reason Trump plays to his base.

Problem is Biden doesn't know if he is worried...

Can't remember what he had for breakfast...Bless him...

Incumbency always helps the Commander in Chief...Florida would be a surprise especially as it is now Trump's home state..

Trump's problem is in the rust belt like Michigan..Ohio and Penn which were won by a whisker and Biden is more of a rust belt icon than crooked Hillary....They also have considerable black populations...Who won't stay home this time and he knows it.

Hence the baiting of his language to try to get Apple piers motivated.

Governor of Kentucky has cut polling stations in black areas for the upcoming primary..

Bellwether States Ohio and Florida have Republican Governors..

Worth bearing in mind when you see these big Biden poll leads for WH2020..

Ohio and Florida will take Trump close to 271..and he is only six points down in Michigan...

Democratic Governors wouldn't dare try to restrict Voting in affluent white Suburban areas....Too much influence.

Not a done deal for Uncle Joe.

Trump v Biden.....

White voters.......Trump +7
Hispanic voters...Biden +40
Black voters.......Biden +79

You can see why the US is so divided right there....

Population by race in USA....

60% White
17% Hispanic
13% Black..........

Trump v Biden.......Enthusiasm of voters...

Trump 62%
Biden 32%

A small minority like Biden....He just isn't Trump....

I still make Trump the narrow favourite from here, but the race has got a lot tighter since Covid-19. BET365 going the other way with Biden at 4/6 and Trump at 13/10.

Whoever's controlling Biden needs to ensure he avoids/skips the three 'debates'. The damage from doing that will be far less than actually appearing in them - making Trump appear articulate and presidential, as he would look next to Biden, would be a calamitous blow for Biden's chances.

They can skip the audience and socially distance if necessary so they will happen.....Biden only has to worry about the Fox News one.....CNN's will be rigged and the moderator will help him out.....ABC's less so but still rigged......Fox news will be rigged the other way....

Trump's last hope is to expose Biden's 'Lack of clarity'.......Not sure even then they won't prefer someone with dementia.....

We'll see.

Biden hasn't done a Press conference for three months and it doesn't matter....Hiding away with a 90% Liberal press doesn't seem to be a problem...

The press is a disgrace both here and there..Calling anti-racist Corbyn a racist for years and now applauding Starmer for attracting Jeremy Clarkson a proven....Violent...Mysogynist who has made racist statements...But it is what it is..

Power of the press....Biden beat Trump in a poll by 7 points as to which one is competent to be President and he clearly has the beginnings of Dementia..

Then again Trump is so useless...Ghislaine Maxwel would probably have better approvals..

Poll yesterday had Trump 5 behind in Pennsylvania....Best poll he has had for a while and still outside the MOE..

Biden needs to get out of the debates.....Trump's only hope..

Covid eases then he has to do them....But will it ????

200 complaints out of 550.000 members....Stop reading the Daily Mail...

I see Bernie Sanders picked up 57 delegates in Florida and 400,000 votes despite dropping out three months ago........Indictment against the Biden candidacy if ever there was one...

Looking at the latest forecast which gives Biden Florida...The College is

Biden 343
Trump 195

Trump is close in Florida and a TT poll has him only 5 back in Pennsylvania......So that could be 49 votes which makes it 294 - 244....Michigan looks lost but he has a sniff at Wisconsin....which would mean 284 -254.....

Ohio has 18 votes to win it for him and that's his last hope......Behind there but not insurmountable...

Tough route for Trump...Difficult to see.

What am I wrong about? That Corbyn facilitated the rise of a bunch of idiots inside the Labour party with questionable beliefs, weather knowingly or not? That the EHRC have investigated Labour as a result? You'll be claiming that wrong daily's sacking offense was not merited next.

Moving on...

Just over 3 months to go...Biden with consistent double digit leads and winning in all the swing states it's hard to see Trump changing perception in such a short time...

Might be worth Biden pulling out of the debates...Yes he will get called a coward....But he denies Trump a potential Game changer....Trump needs a Hail Mary..

Hiding Biden is certainly working..

Saw something about Trump's campaign headquarters being closed down over COVID infections. Won't help either.

Interesting polling out that has 66% of Biden voters primary reason for supporting him as Covid...

Less than half of Biden voters want him as President..They just hate the alternative more...

Bad weekend for cases in the US...Question is if the cases drop in the next few months will Trump get a sniff or is he too far behind.... Relief from a diminishing of threat could turn into votes with some I imagine for Trump.

Trump is ahead on the Economy....But Biden has huge leads in Marginals.

Be a huge upset if Trump won now...But Biden's support being linked to the virus and his worrying state of health leaves a door slightly open.. Only slightly.

You simply cant deny that in terms of the Eocnomy, Trump wins hands down.

He's a total muppet. A control freak. A bully. He only cares about the money money money. He's a business man.

If you want some Dollars in your pocket, ok with folk being gunned down in the street, don't care if folk are squeezed to breaking point as long as you can buy a new mobile phone, then trump is your man.

Biden is an utter liability but he's up against the most self centred buffoon since Nixon. My dog would win an election over Trump, but can Biden?

Why couldnt the democrats get someone decent to run?

Mind you, it doesnt matter anyway. If Trump wins, he'll start world war 3 with CHINAAAAAA. If he loses he'll nuke someone out of spite before he's dragged out the whitehouse.

You seem very anti-Biden if I might say so. He might surprise you - look at Reagan. Assuming he's the nominee and he then wins, perhaps depends on his team more than him? Maybe he'll agree to only serve a single term early on, if he wins.

You want to look at Reagan..

The savings and loans scandal which cost Taxpayers 200 billion....Assault on Unions that hit Workers rights...Administration that had the most officials investigated for corruption in modern history....Iran Contra.....

You want to keep looking or is that enough for now ???

Biden is no change...Already told Big pharma and Wall Street he won't touch them...No hunting down Tax dodgers.

USA is hurting....Record evictions...Record People bankrupted over Medical costs and we are replacing a Conservative with another one..

I'm no Biden fan you are right.....No change to No change.

Change is desperately needed.

He didn't register in any of the States on time....The whole of the Country collapsed in shock.  We thought he could be the Supernova......

But the publicity will come in handy for him no doubt.

Greens should of picked Ventura who won Minnesota as an Independent and is a known name..

5% in the polls gets you on to the debate stage and anything can happen against two corpses...

Greens made a big mistake.....

Does that mean that the republicans are now stuck with Trump? There had been talk that he'd drop out if his ratings stayed bad. I do wonder if he'll be retired on medical grounds at some point.

There is the 25th amendment which states you can forcibly remove the President and give his responsibilities to the VP if he is unfit...Brought in post JFK assassination.

VP's taking over were a sore point with some dating back to Pro slavery Andrew Johnson (Lincoln's VP) sympathies to the  South following the war...He was impeached later.....Also has the record for using the President's veto...

25th was brought in too because in the past there was an attempt to take succession from Vice President Tyler after Harrison died just after winning the Presidency in the late 1800s......Harrison had campaigned in the wild with his shirt off to show he was the alpha male the US needed (according to folklore) and caught pneumonia and died..(Ex soldier)

Getting a bit late for the 25th and can't see Trump resigning so yes it's Trump..

But you can have the history for free..

Hear that? That was the sound of the 'point' going over your head. Maybe think sometimes, before firing off?

I didn't say I admired Reagan's policies or Iran-Contra. Jesus wept. What I said was he was judged a successful President etc. He was hugely popular w/ a lot of 'folks', was he not? He won two terms, did he not? The point was that it's a team w/ POTUS as the visible head. Trump has either employed scheisse or sacked those that probably weren't because they wouldn't either do, or allow Trump to do, bloody stupid things.

If Biden were to appoint sensibly, no reason people wouldn't ultimately look back on his time and say he did a good job.
