PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
First topic message reminder :
PGATour Running Commentary- Aug 2020
1. Last week: Justin Thomas overcame a 4 shot deficit to win the WGC-FEDEX St Jude by three shots over a four players of Tom Lewis, Daniel Berger, Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka Richie Werenski won the Barracuda event, by one point over Troy Merritt.
2. After he won the Memorial, Jon Rahm took the #1 OWGR ranking from Rory, and now after winning the FEDEX, Justin Thomas took the #1 spot.
3. This week is the PGA Championship, with most of the OWGR Top 100 players in the field. The tournament venue is at Harding Park, which has hosted two WGC tournaments in the last 20 years. Here are some finishes by players in this years field: Woods (1), Garcia (3), Stenson (3), GMac (6), Furyk (15)Poulter (18), Mickelson (29), Scott (29), ZJohnson (43), The Match play was played at Harding Park in 2015, won by Rory, beating Woodland in finals. Players advancing to the Round of 16, include Willett, Furyk, Casey, Oosty, Fleetwood, Fowler, Hideki, and Leishman.
4. Only two more tournaments to qualify for the FEDEX playoffs, some notable players that are currently inside the Top 125, but probably have not clinched a spot in the Northern Trust (Tom Lewis (#117), Russell Knox (#120, Paul Casey (#121), Charl Schwartzel (#123). Some players just barely outside the Top 125 include Nick Watney, Zach Johnson, Matt Wallace, Shane Lowry, RCB, Sergio, and Justin Rose. Some players that need a big week to get inside the Top 125 include Willett, Dufner, Power, Walker, Stenson

You must have a better memory than DJ, because apparently he forget that he had played the course before.
He initially thought he had never played it then someone reminded him he had played a sponsor event there.

I can sometimes remember the shots I played on a great course years afterwards, it is hard to fathom actually forgetting that you have played one. I doubt DJ is a Tillinghast aficionado.

JT has looked pretty wayward off the tee this summer, especially when he perseveres with hitting his 3 wood. Which actually seems more unreliable than his driver. Is that a recipe for US Open success?

It's A LOT harder for sure, but no major differences to the holes. That rough is almost like a water hazard.

I take that last comment back, I have just put the coverage on. JT's game probably isn't currently suited to a US open but this is not a US Open. USGA have chickened out and given us a regular PGAT event.

Cream already rising to the top with JT and Rory ... but it's early days!
Mac - I do like this (IMO of course) fairer test of golf.
Look for pin positions and green speeds to get faster however.

Re: PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
Kinda agree with Mac - this is hyped as the toughest test in golf and they’ve just had a round that looked like a slightly tough PGA tour round. At least if it’s tough for all four rounds it evens itself out a bit with the “bounce of the ball” and “luck”, as these things do over a larger sample size
Hopefully it does get a lot tougher, but that was a pretty underwhelming start to round 1

Re: PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
Maybe total carnage isn't required but the greens should have been firm at a bare minimum. Really it is about variety, and we see soft receptive greens almost every week on the PGAT. I don't care what the score is but I want to see the players forced to confront a certain type of golf.
If the USGA feel it is a choice between lethal greens or thick rough, I vote lethal greens with more playable rough.

If you miss the FW you should fight for your par. Whether it being thick rough or fast greens I don't care.

Do you not think it’s more to do with the amount of great courses they play? Obviously they’re going to remember the majors but can you imagine how many sponsors events they must play?
I take it you are fan of Tillinghast designs then Mac? Have you played many?

No, never played a Tillie course. My experience of North American golf is pretty limited.
On DJ, I bet even most pros mentally tick off top 100 courses they have played.

Do you reckon? I’d think they’d most likely have played most of them bar going overseas...the UK courses would probably be more pertinent to a US player and vice versa. Especially if they’ve played amateur golf to a high standard

After a simple first round, we've got the carnage that was due. Looks like the winner will, at best, end up with one or two under par. Narrowly favouring Jon Rahm to win it from this position, but it's going to be so tightly contested. The wheels should come off for DeChambeau at some point today.

Might just be me, but +6 in the best conditions of the day is not good.
Expecting the wheels to continue to fall off today.
Still fancy Thomas, although with the way Reed is putting and around the greens if he actually hits it on the short stuff he could pull away...

Well, scoring much higher on Friday and I don't expect things to get any easier. Seems like everyone, except BDC, is concerned about getting their drive into the fairway. Anyone's guess who raises the trophy on Sunday. Certainly no clear favorite.

Not sure that’s true about Bryson - he’s hitting 50% of fairways so far, compared to the average of 40% for the field. In fact the most accurate driver, Joel Dahmen, missed the cut.
I’m not expecting him to go away today.

Well, both BDC and Wolff didn't hit very many fairways but they are sitting 1 and 2. Not sure that strategy will work again tomorrow. Given that, beware Louis or Xander. And Rory at +1 can get it going like no other. Should be a lot of fun tomorrow.

Question regarding Rory McIlroy, what’s the deal with him and not winning majors in recent times? His talent doesn’t really justify 6 years without a major imo.

My view, I don't think he has the same drive as some others. Brilliant player though. Has a record right up with the best ever.

I've read Webb is a really nice guy, and I see that. Just not sure if I'd fancy a beer with him. Actually I'm having second thoughts on Reed, I reckon he could go on a big one.

Why couldn't the R&A get an Open Championship this calendar year? Can't imagine the European Tour is that busy.

It was a deserved win. Just very underwhelming. Without the fans, and hearing bdc throughout the round, makes him even harder to like. Dougherty and Coleorton barely hiding their dislike for him. I think he slowly killed Wolf by dragging him into his game.
