The AFA has also announced it plans to merge the teams from the country's top two divisions into one next year, combining all 20 from the top flight and 16 or 18 from the second tier.

It is likely that the teams will be divided into regional groups, meaning a reprieve for River Plate who were relegated for the first time in their history at the end of the 2010-2011 season.

Something not right there...

The thing is as far as i know this was a process over a couple of seasons, with a lot of coach changes and poor performances. It wasn't out of nowhere they were relegated, it had been coming.

The system that relegated them was supposed to protect the big clubs from the drop. That it didn't showed how catastrophically poor River have been over a sustained period of time.

It's a hilariously blatant move to keep them in the 'top flight' -- however they actually plan the system now.

I wonder if River will still claim to be never relegated?
