What Are You Currently Reading?
As the title suggests; this is just a post to find out what people are currently reading (I don't want any sarcastic comments stating "This thread" )
I'm currently reading What The Night Knows by Dean Koontz. I'm only about 19 chapters in, but it's really good so far.
I finished Shattered Bones by Stuart MacBride at the weekend. That was okay, but the editing was poor so it detracted from my enjoyment a little.
Actually that is another question for this thread. Is it just me, or does sloppy editing bother you? I'm talking in terms of spelling mistakes, double words etc. I find it really off putting and I can't really explain why. I guess it could be because it interupts the flow of the story.
It really grinds my gears

Re: What Are You Currently Reading?
Just finished Unseen Academicals which was mildly amusing and in places very funny...
I'm just wasting train time rereading various books at the moment whilst I wait for At the Gate of Darkness and Kingdom Besieged to be released.
I might have to grab my copy of Rides a Dread Legion off the shelves to read again prior to getting the next book in a few weeks.

Im currently reading Richard Attenborough's autobiography and finding it very entertaining. I picked it up on a whim in the library not expecting much and am now very glad I did.
Very enjoyable, its quite good as is co-written with Diane Hawkins

Just seen your other question!
I think that any decent book to be sold in a proper book store should be proof read so many times that all these mistakes are eliminated. It really disappoints me when I see any kind of error in a book like that (even those that are grammatical errors!)

More often than not it's a printing error. Although I would expect a spellcheck to be a key part of the process these days.

But the printing errors for me should pick up on double words etc.
It just bugs me.

Re: What Are You Currently Reading?
That sort of thing, while irritating, isn't as bad as inconsistencies.
In the sword of truth series the character Sammael changes to Samuel in the later books. Bloody annoying for some reason.

It's exactly that kind of thing that does annoy me.

Just finished The Men Who Stare at Goats there's some real wacky stuff in it but it makes you think that the American Government and Military Intelligence aren't playing with a full deck.
Just started Zulu Rising about the Zulu Wars the first impression I have is that how we destroyed a way of life that didn't conform with our "civilized" outlook in Victorian Britain.

Just finished '61 Hours' by Lee Child; it's a Jack Reacher novel. A friend recommended the book to me, it took me a while to get in to it, but on the second day I was reading it started to pick up. Next thing I know it's half two in the morning and I've finished it

The Jack Reacher series is great.
Echo Burning was the first Reacher novel I picked up...after that I went back and read the entire series.

That's what I plan to do; didn't realise there had been 13 others before this one though! Think I'll be trying to take advantage of the library down the road a bit more now.

I started on book 14 of a series before too. I gave up at book 7 after going back to the beginning.
This one you will be able to finish though. It's a great series.

currently reading 'One of Our Thursdays is Missing' by Jasper Fforde. Loosely described as 'far-fetched fiction'. If you like Robert Rankin, you'll probably like Fforde.
Just finished the latest Denis Lehane. He has written a series of crime thrillers set in Boston (Gone Baby Gone was made into a film recently). I like his books because living in Boston, I know many of the places he mentions.

Re: What Are You Currently Reading?
Reading Iam Legend by Richard Matheson at the moment. Was not sure what to expect from it but it is a great read and a different take on the old vampire story.
Being a sub editor for a newspaper bad editing really bugs me in a book. I can understand the odd mistake getting through but if there are several mistakes in a book then that just annoys me. These people get paid to spot mistakes after all so there is no excuse for it.

I've just started reading "The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown
I don't think the editing is cruddy, more his writing. But he does write a really good suspense story, even if his prose leaves a lot to be desired. And this one is already a page-turner.

Started reading Apache Dawn and finding it hard to put it down. When you read stories about the war against the Taliban it is mostly about foot soldiers, it is refreshing to read about the war from a pilots point of view. It makes you realise that they are effected by the killing on the ground as much as anybody else.

I've just finnished 'The Lincoln Lawyer' by Micheal Connelly, which ws okay,
but had worked ot who done what by about half way, so most of the twists
weren't a suprise.
Now reading 'Toll the Hounds' by Steven Erikson. Which is the 8th book in
the a seris called A tale of the Malazan book of the fallen. And like most of the
other 7 the start is hard work.

I'm still reading 'Between a Rock & a Hard Place' by Aron Ralston, which has recently been turned into a film called '127 hours'. OK ish, about a third of the way through. Not what I would call 'unputdownable'.

Just finished reading Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand - great read! She also wrote "Seabiscuit" a few years back. It's a true story about an American runner called Louis Zamperini who competed in the 1936 Olympics. He became a bombardier on a B24 bomber in the 2nd world war and survived a crash into the Pacific where he then drifted on a raft for a long long time. Won't tell you any more - but you should definitely read it - well worthwhile.

Read 'One Shot' by him at xmas & like yourself took a while to get into it but when I did couldn't put it down. Not the greatest conclusion but not a bad read.
Just finished Martina Cole's 'Close', good read, her usual London Irish gangster stuff. I'd recommend her books if you like crime/gangster stuff, pretty accurate & doesn't glorify to much. Just reading P G Wodehouse 'Ukridge', collection of short stories about a toff spiv in the 'Jeeves & Wooster' style.

I'm currently reading 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I'm about half way through and still not sure what I make of it. It's very different to what I usually read which I like, but I don't feel like it's my cup of tea. Interesting though.
and for those already mentioned: Lord of the Rings and I am Legend - both brilliant.

I haven't read a "proper" book in ages,in the fact that I've been reading autobiographies mostly sporting.Really want to go back and read through all the Harry Potter books again but never seem to have the time to get started.
Read a couple of books for my English Lit course,Spies by Michael Frayn and Oranges are not the only fruit by Jeanette Winterson as well as the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy. Can't say any of them appeal to my tastes,Spies is good but I just don't really enjoy reading it.Oranges and Duffy's poetry I just cannot stand, particularly Duffy.

Re: What Are You Currently Reading?
Just finished Dennis Lehane's latest. It's a follow up to Gone Baby Gone. Not his best, but it's OK. Also halfway through The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. It's a sci-fi novel with people time travelling to the middle ages.
I like to have a 'classic' on the go too, so I'm reading A Tale of Two Cities.
Oh and I'm also reading Theo Fleury's autobiography. Booze, drugs and ice-hockey make for an interesting read.
