I'm sick of seeing the haka already. Nice to hear some fine Welsh voices in response, excuse my ignorance but what song is it?

The song is called Lawr ar Lan y Mor

On the seashore are red roses
on the seashore are white lilies
on the seashore is my darling
who sleeps at night and wakes by morning.

That's a different 'Ar Lan y Mor' surely, Cymro? It's great to hear them singing, though.

I couldn't see who was leading / doing the solo bit - any ideas?

It's clearly a work of metaphorical hyperbole. Roses would never grow on a sea shore, neither would lilies. The soil conditions would be vastly too saline and far to damp, all wrong, not to mention the exposure to the harsh climatic changes. How is a lily supposed to deal with that kind of thing?

Being a keen gardner living on the coast I can assure you that roses will grow in sand the Rosa Rugusa being one variety. Very Happy

Greyghost, who said anything about growing. The song just says they're on the seashore. Maybe they're laid as a bouquet or wreath?

Also it's 'too', not 'to'!

I got the first too right! typo! gimme a break.

If they're not growing, how did they get there? how did the singer know they'd still be there when he got back? I think the chance of the lilies still being white in that case is fairly unlikely.

In the song the flowers are used to describe his girlfriend.

I take that point Cymroglan, but if you were a girl would you really like to be compared to a fetid decaying wreath of lilies carelessly abandoned in a weather beaten wilderness while your alleged lover had run off overseas? while his closing refrain on your fairness was no more grand than remarking on the simplicity of your rudimentary nocturnal regime?

Perhaps my mistake. I always imagine seashore metaphors are indicative of absenteeism.

I think Brad Thorne put the roses there and the reason they grew was because they had been planted in Stuart Barnes's mouth thumbsup

To be fair, Welsh wins over the AB's arent just leaning towards the rare side. They are still breathing and chewing cud, as it were.
English victories over the AB's are blue and yet to go anywhere near the pan.

The song is called Lawr ar Lan y Mor and it's different (perhaps different variation) to the one Cymro is on about. Scarlets fans sing this one all the time and the first verse and chorus are briefly translated to:

I met a pretty girl
down by the sea
down by the sea
down by the sea
I met a pretty girl
down by the sea

Oh I love you,
Oh I love you,
the girl down by the sea
Oh I love you,
Oh I love you
The girl down by the sea

Now I haven't translated that properly really so apologies for that. But the second verse goes on to say how they get a kiss from the girl, and in the third verse it's about getting to marry her.

It's a traditional Welsh song and I love it, sounds and means much more in Welsh I feel, the translation just doesn't do it enough credit sorry!
