In The Field
Fielding?
Nothing much worse than batting first, getting out early and then standing at long leg all afternoon.
I use to bowl a few overs (medium pace) so it did break up the boredom at times and I normally fielded in the covers/mid wicket which meant you were normally involved.
Were/are you a keen fielder and where did/do you field?
Also what type of bowler are/were you?

Re: In The Field
Fielded backward point more often than not, and sometimes at square leg.
Enjoyed being in relatively close for the banter and the involvement of it all.
Seam bowler, at a lively enough pace but nothing too serious. Had a knack of taking wickets in the work T20 games, even against some of the better batsmen we came up against. My highlight being when I bowled the last over of the match, they needed 9 to win, and were 7 down, and I knocked over their guy who was pretty much their last proper batsman with the first ball, just clipped the bails off the top of off stump, perfect delivery. Followed that up with a couple of singles and a dot ball, a single and then a slight panic when the last ball flew through for 4 byes after a mistake from the keeper, but thankfully it wasn't enough for them.

Backward point?
The ball can certainly fly at you from there.

Re: In The Field
Backward point or the covers for the quick guys and then a boundary rider for the spinners as being the youngster of the team I am the one who is put in the positions where you have to run a lot. And because I can't take easy catches, I only catch the hard ones...
I see myself as a very, very poor man's Albie Morkel. Sort of swing and hope batsmen who bowls some medium pace dobble at the death!

Re: In The Field
I was captain for a few years which meant I could field wherever I wanted.
I used to be a very good fielder when I played regularly. Liked cover or mid-wicket, could also be the token slip when it was thought we might get an edge (usually moved myself out a few balls before the said edge occured!). Could boundary-ride (safe hands) but didn't very often as captain and anyway never had much of a throwing arm. When I wasn't captain I was often doing cow corner to cow corner which was annoying...
Bowled part-time leg-spin, with the odd cracker tossed in amongst a lot of dross. One year I had to bowl fairly regularly and did ok, but rarely went at under 6 or 7 an over.

Re: In The Field
For some reason I've always struggled to pick the ball up from mid-on...

Re: In The Field
don't bowl at all for my team which is a shame as i can bowl, so i spend however long in the field at mid off, talking to the bowler and then later in the innings i generally fielded at long off, however recently when a spinner/medium pacer is on i now field at mid wicket on the one with deep square, cow and long on

Re: In The Field
Its all about anticpating where the ball is going and running at an angle which ensures you can call "yours " to the next fielder along, then give them a disapproving look when they fail to get to it.

Re: In The Field
I keep wicket which means you tend to be in the game a lot. When not keeping, captain usually gets me to do slip, though in the last game I fielded backward point and took a couple of catches there. Really dislike fielding at square-leg for some reason, can't pick up the ball at all.

Re: In The Field
Point was the position I hated most.
You'd get so many thick edges and half of them would bounce just in front of your fingers, meaning you would either split your finger or if you were lucky, miss it completely whilst the ball ran to the boundary.

Re: In The Field
I was happy fielding anywhere except gully or point. I liked mid on as I could see the ball all the way and anticipate the ball heading in my direction.

Re: In The Field
Bowling spin and opening the batting I will be fielding at Point (Our captain has a thing for putting the opener at point. Loved it though, always in the game.
Managed to worm my way to slip or silly point a few times though.
During my spell I tend to go to square leg to "protect my hand"

Re: In The Field
I've done silly point and short leg a few times. TBH I didn't enjoy short-leg, and was always on my heels so doubt I'd have caught anything anyway.

Re: In The Field
I field at slip mostly, got decent reactions so can throw myself about a bit. Done silly point too, was an experience.
Bowling wise, I'm a lefty fast medium.

Re: In The Field
Usually kept wicket, although always enjoyed fielding at point or midwicket. Wasn't a bad deep fielder either, as (being a rugby player as well), I had a bit of a rocket arm.
Have to admit though that initially wicket keeping was because of the quality of my slow, non-turning off spin...
