The Peano axioms are a way to build the set of non negative integers (to you this is just 0,1,2,etc.). You have your trivial ones (if a=b then b=a; a=a etc.) and then you have the notion of "successor" function S, which again satisfies some fairly natural properties (the successor of a number is a number; if two numbers have the same successor they are the same, etc.)

This allows us to define an operation on natural numbers which we call addition, by a+S(b) = S(a+b).
Taking a=S(0)=1 (by defintion) and b=0 we get 1+1=S(1)=2 by definition.

Makes sense?

No need for that bitching. Being as you bring it up, my present job is redundant, but I couldn't afford to take redundancy so I'm awaiting redeployment. Thankfully I was given another post, and I'm currently waiting for the paperwork to be done to start my new post to which I've been redeployed. I literally have no work to do as my job no longer exists though I'm still expected to go into the office. Once I start my new post I won't be on 606 at all during office hours. In the interim, I can only sit tight and wait...yes I am still paid for that, but that means I am still paying tax and not claiming benefit and I won't be unemployed. Is that a good enough explanation for you?
