Spinning tips and tricks...
Any you guys are willing to share?
Any areas of the river in particular you look to cast to?
I've always found the odd quicker turn after slowly retrieving the spinner to be a winner, sometimes jerking a fish into action and snatching at the spinner.

Re: Spinning tips and tricks...
This year I have been using more jigs and dead baits when working the river, not with any notable success i should add,
Can honestly say that having fished the upper reaches of the Thames extensively for the last few years, that when a stretch screams fishy to me, it has always been out fished by a nondescript stretch around the corner.
Don`t like to think of the amount of hours I have spent working a so called fishy spot be it weir pool or reed bed etc and getting nowhere, when i have caught before in a grubby man made cut/channel in the middle of a town.
As to the lures I really think depth is the key, if you can get one running 1 or 2 foot above the river/lake bed thats ideal if the water has enough depth,, but you do lose a good few lures in the process,
I have had a lot of success with surface lures but only on hot spells or shallow rivers or chalk streams, when only a surface lure will do

Shallow rivers I've always had problems with, actually.
There is a shallow stretch of the Severn where I sometimes go spinning, and I've not managed to have a great deal of success. Any tips in such a situation?
Maybe a surface lure is the way forward, then?

Re: Spinning tips and tricks...
Ive tried using single hooks rather then trebles, less snags and no obvious reduction in the hooking rate

If im going spinning i always make sure i have a box of chopped worm with me , i find a couple of pieces of chopped worm on the hook of the spinner can really get bites .

That's a good idea, Kenny, never thought about adding any additional bait on.

Cant take the credit , saw it on a old Go Fishing with John Wilson years ago . It does work though bits of chopped worm coming off as you retrieve the spinner .

Thanks for sharing, anyway.
I do enjoy the shallow stretch of the Severn that I spin, however only had a couple of small perch on my last visit, so was struggling for bites as well as with the snags.

Spinning for perch on really light tackle is one of my favourite methods of fishing .

Re: Spinning tips and tricks...
Think i`m sold kingkenny, river was very low and slow, no color at all so just used small lures and plugs , the worms definitely seemed to work, had a small chub follow it in a few times but didnt take,
nothing over a pound but hey ho good few perch just not that monster i`m after

On my drive through South Wales yesterday the rivers looked in fine fettle. A nice chocolatey brown colour, but not too full or fast. Perfect, I'd have said.
