We have gone with a super mobile ball carrying pack with the aim of blowing scarlets off the park.

We are aiming to play fast and loose after winning the initial pack battle. This is a serious gloucester backline cut out for getting a massive BP win

Setpiece
At scrum time we will be looking to really turn the screw. Schuster and Tialata are both strong scrummagers and will look to get at their man and really disrupt Cardiff putting the nudge on and providing us with a solid platform all game. At the lineout, we will look to Day to lead. He will call the line and will have Millo Chluski, at the front, and our entire back row to support him as jumpers to mix things up. Our jumpers will look to either play the ball of the top quickly and look to our backline to move it or bring it down into a maul and make the hard yards through the pack, sucking in the opposition forwards to leave space out wide for our backs. On Cardiff ball we will look for Millo Chluski to get up in the air at the front of the line and Day to follow Down in the line and disrupt the Blues lineout. If we really start to get on top of the lineout we will look to Cruden to kick for the corners a few times and really put the pressure on.

Breakdown
We have a very mobile and quick pack to really target the breakdown. On our own ball we will look to our forwards to get numbers to the breakdown quickly rucking past the ball and clearing out the Cardiff boys looking to recycle clean fast ball. On defence, if we are first to the breakdown or the ball carrier is isolated we will look to seriously commit numbers and will look to Todd to secure us turnover ball. At all other times we will commit lighter numbers to the breakdown but look to counter ruck slowing down Cardiff ball allowing our defensive line more time to set.

General Attacking Play
We will look to play a strong carrying game using our big carriers to hit the gain line offloading in or just before the tackle (when it's on) to support runners breaking the defensive line and keeping our forward momentum going. Smith will look to come in field at different times picking lines of the midfield looking for the ball on the offload. If running the ball is not on we will look to Cruden to kick in behind the opposition back 3.

Danny Care will look to play around the fringes of the breakdown and make his usual snipping runs when it’s on, tying the opposition back row to the breakdown. Cruden has been instructed to play heads up rugby and if overlaps or gaps appear they will look to get the ball moving and take advantage. Rooney will look to come up from fullback from time to time and offer an extra ball carrying threat while looking to create these overlaps out wide.

Cruden will look to kick for goal when in opposition territory and take the drop goal option when it’s available to keep the score board moving.

General Defensive Play
In defence we will be using a blitz defence and will look to get up at pace looking to isolate the ball carrier before he gets to the gain line stopping any Cardiff momentum and allowing us to hit the breakdown hard. We will look to keep the Blues on the back foot forcing the kick. Danny Care will act as a sweeper and look to cover any chips in behind the line. Our wingers will look to sit deeper on defence then the rest of the line ready for any kicks. Our back three have been instructed to play to their strengths and look for the counter attack, running the ball back with serious pace.

16. Clarke Dermody 17. Lee Mears 18. Johnny Harris 19. Tom Croft 20. Nick Easter 21. Micky Young 22. Florian Fritz 23. Isa Nacewa

Tactics

- Look to Waldrom, Hines, Horwill, Pocock, Jenkins and Moore to give us real go-forward with their carrying. With the ball in hand we want to attack together in groups so as not to become isolated, and if it is on we will look to offload in or just before the tackle. All players are to act as support runners when they can.

- Attack the lineout as a weapon using the tactical kicking of Yachvili and Wilkinson. With 3 specialists, we will relentlessly target Creevy's throws.

- Pocock is the man charged with reaching the breakdown first, securing first phase possession for us and pilfering the possession of Montpellier.

- We are looking to get our backs into the game as much as possible. We will be physical and relentless up front and pacey and clinical in attack.

- In general attacking play, we will play off 9, with Yachvili pulling the strings. We will look to go through the phases and dominate possession, move Montpellier around with our half back's tactical kicking, and unleash our pacey back three as and when we can.

- If the game is tight and the ball isn't coming quickly, Wilkinson will look to drop into the pocket and keep the scoreboard ticking over with drop goals.

- Our back three are encouraged to do what comes naturally to all of them - counter attacking and running the ball back. All have good boots to rely on if it isn't on or they are isolated, but the counter is what we ask them to look for.

- Early on Yachvili to kick all penalites within range, but we won't necessarily go for the 3 points as the game progresses. Horwill to make the call dependant on the success of the lineout.

Tactics

Our generic gameplan revolves around a high intensity attacking and defensive game.

In attack our primary gameplan is always to control possession and run the ball, utilising big carriers attacking gaps in the line, and looking to offload to support runners to continue getting over the gainline and keep the ball alive. If the offload is not on, we will take the contact and look to recycle quickly at the breakdown. If running the ball is not on we will uitilise the kicking game of one of our backs to take us into the right area of the pitch.

In defence we will look to blitz, with our scrum half sweeping behind the defensive line. Key for us is line speed, getting up to make the tackle before the ball carrier hits the gainline, and confidence and trust in the man next to you in the defensive line, meaning we will not jump out or get pulled to far away from the next defender leaving gaps that can be exploited.

At the breakdown, we will not overcommit players. If the ball is not there to be won, then we will commit 1 or 2 players to legally slow it down whilst maintaining a strong defensive line across the pitch. If the ball looks like it is there to be won, we will look to get more numbers there quickly, with the first 1 or 2 players immediately rucking past the ball to clear the opposition players who are trying to get hands on it, and the next man in will then look to get it out quickly for us to counter attack on turnover ball.

We will look to really attack the scrum, both in attack and defence. We will not be looking to drop the scrum at all, and Joe van Niekerk in his role as captain will be talking to the referee constantly to ensure that he is aware that we want to scrummage. We will look to be aggressive in this area throughout.

16. Soane Tonga'uhia 17. Neil Briggs 18. Duncan Bell 19. Nick Kennedy 20. Keegan Daniel 21. Julien Dupuy 22. Matthew Tait 23. Marland Yarde

Tactics

We are going to target the scrum with Poux looking to get the better of Afoa and Castro to give Marler a schooling. We will use this as an attacking platform and get the backs in play. With Bowden back, we will look to get as much clean and quick ball as possible as he thrives off this and can really cause Quins defence issues.

We will look to dominate possession and territory and use the boots of Pienaar, Bowden and Hernandez to pin Quins back if we have any slow ball. With ball in hand we will look to get Bowden, Pienaar, SBW, Fourie, JP Pieterson involved and running at Quins.

At the lineout we have four jumpers in Garvey, Botha, Spies and Kaino. We will look to secure good ball here and get the ball out to the backs as much as possible.

At the breakdown, we will look to overpower Quins with Kaino and Spies hitting the rucks hard and allowing Fourie to go for the ball. Any turnover ball will be counter attacked.

JMH to kick all pens for goal, if out of range we will go for touch.

16. Rob Vickers 17. Tony Woodcock 18. Kieran Brookes 19. George Skivington 20. Jamie Gibson 21. Jano Vermaak 22. George Lowe 23. Anthony Faainga

Tactics

We travel to the Madjeski knowing that this is a very important game for Irish and we are going to look to get the crowd frustrated and put Irish under pressure. We have picked a strong side which is capable of playing a fast paced game as well as a being able to slow the ball down and play the percentages.

Our general game plan will be to put a lot of phases together and starve Irish of the ball. We will use our big runners to punch holes in the Irish defence. We will look for our players to carry the ball at pace and in numbers and we will look to win the collisions. When we can get the offload away we will look to get the offload away to a supporting player. Our game will be controlled by TOL and Preistland who will look for runners to take us over the game line and get us quick ball so we can then unleash our backs.

Up front we are looking for domination. We know to win away we must at least have parity up front so we have picked a big pack which we feel will be capable of getting a good amount of ball. The back 5 of our pack has its shortest member at 6 foot 3 and this extra size we will help us to win the forward battle and give us an obvious advantage at the lineout. We have some very strong carriers all across our pack and we will look to bring them into the game as much as possible. We are going to luck to put pressure on the Irish set piece. We have picked to short props so as they can attempt to get underneath there opponents and make them uncomfortable.

We will look to scrummage in a low position so as to take the Irish front row out of its comfort zone. We will look for Afoa to really get after Poux. At the lineout we have 5 very capable jumpers to disrupt the Irish lineout with Sharpe marking their key jumper. We are going to look to pressure Buckland's throw as much as possible. On our own ball when between the two 22m lines we will use a 5 man line with Heaslip and Dowson out with the backs and when we are in either 22 we will use a longer lineout.

At rucks we will look to commit 3 or 4 max to our own rucks as this is plenty at the top level. We will look to disrupt the Irish rucks with 2 players looking to ruck straight through the middle and cause Irish to commit more men and slow down the Irish ball. When we get the first man to the ruck we will look to compete legally to win the ball. We will look to really hurt Irish with the rolling maul when we get the chance in either 22.

Our back line has a lot of exciting players who are encouraged to run at spaces not faces. We will look to draw in Irish defender so we can get Joseph, Heymans and Morahan in space and to isolate the Irish defenders outwide. We will look to use a kicking game to put pressure onto Irish by kicking behind there back 3 and using kicks in an attacking sense (Cross kicks, up and unders etc). We are going to look to get Joseph to run the outside shoulder of Fourie as we feel this is where the weakness in the Irish midfield is.

In defence we will play with a very quick defensive line so Irish players have very little time to think on the ball. We will look to double up on players when we have sufficient numbers with one player looking to get onto the ball to cause the turnover. We are determined not to concede penalties as this will undo the pressure we have built up and could gift Irish points. Our back 3 will sit deep when it is likely Irish will kick. We are wanting to win the territory battle and want to kick behind the Irish wingers and try to avoid kicking to JMH as his boot is far stronger than either Irish winger.

Key Points

• There is a lot of pressure on Irish to win and we look to use this to our advantage. We will look to starve them of the ball or to kick to the corners depending on the game situation. We want the home fans to get frustrated. and get on the home sides back.

• We are going to use our big pack to punch holes in the Irish defence and will wait until we get quick ball to release our backline.

• Our players will attack in numbers and to look for the offload when its on

• We will look to win the collisions in both attack and defence so we have a target for our forwards to hit when they reach the ruck.

• Look to make the turnovers count. We will look to attack an unorganised defence or put in a kick which gets us good territory.

Tough place to win. ferris was exceptional on the weekend in a tidy backrow. Afoa was good also.

Personally i think they miss Pienaar massively although the 9 is a good player.

Never convinced by humps or Wallace though.

I have Llanelli in what will probably be a high scorer. They need a decent pack to compete and that front 5 apart from Rees is pretty poor. there backline is pretty tidy though.

They struggle away though, generally pretty hard to win away in HC. Think Saints and Gloucester proved that despite maybe dominating

Leicester Tigers have made 7 changes to the side that beat Glasgow Warriors away last week.

Gethin Jenkins, Alex Brown, David Pocock and Thomas Waldrom all come into the pack, whilst Topsy Ojo, Yannick Jauzion and Cory Jane all return into the back line, as Tigers name a strong side for their Welford Road clash with Montpellier.

Glaws tactics

We have gone with a super mobile ball carrying pack with the aim of blowing scarlets off the park.

We are aiming to play fast and loose after winning the initial pack battle. This is a serious gloucester backline cut out for getting a massive BP win

16. Imolek 17. Sharman 18. Ducalcon 19. AWJ 20. Quedragao 21. Perry 22. Hook 23. Abendanoon

Gloucester 48-20 Scarlets

See a real high scorer with Gloucester set out to attack. Don't see Scarlets as being push overs and they contest well in the scrum. Gloucester to take their lineout to pieces though. Gloucester 11-15 are simply top notch and will cause havoc. Enough on bench to push this home even further in the second. An ominous display from the holders.

Cardiff 19-21 Sale

A big grizzly front 5 that will set the tone for Sale in a seriously tough encounter with Blues in great form. Backrow battle will be belting with Warbs leading the Cardiff fight. Too much through the Sale pack though and just enough in the backline to have them sneak the win. A real tight one though.

Another monster pack battle and it's good to see Luke has brought out the big guns as he could have lost this one if not. Good pack and the half packs to dictate play for Tigers. Spicy back 3 for Leicester will cause serious damage ball in hand.

Gloucester 53 - 11 Scarlets
Only think Matthew Rees would make the Gloucester starting 15, and with Lamb on great form for Saints in real life this is going to be a one sided affair and then it turns into a mauling with Mat's bench.

Cardiff 22 - 22 Sale
I was going to go for a Sale win but then when you look at the Cardiff team they have so many players on form, and I cant see the Sale pack getting enough of an upper hand in this to win away. The thing that stops Cardiff getting a win is that I dont see them threatening Sale out wide and scoring tries.

Leicester 29 - 19 Montpellier
Montpellier away from home are completely different and a trip to Welford Road isnt what they will be wanting - can see this being a 10 point win, with the French giving away too many penalties and getting frustrated.

Newcastle 33 - 21 Ulster
Too much class in the Newcastle team and bench - do see it as a weakness in the Newcastle team that they havent got a big back somewhere to punch holes through the gainline at this level - could cost them during the winter months.

Biaritz 24 - 26 Saracens
Biaritz are going to score tries against any team at home, but I dont think that they are one of the French teams to be feared this year. Trinder does change that Sarries backline, would like to see Farrell used there too, as he is for Sarries in real life, and going to 2nd receiver. Think Sarries have got an attacking element in their midfield now and will score more points from the boot than Biaritz to get the win.

Gloucester 33 - 13 Scarlets
Glaws stronger in most areas and should see a bonus point win at home here

Leicester 16 - 9 Montpellier
Strong team put out by Luke. Montpeiller are a side on the up but Tigers have enough to win here. Cant see a bonus point win though with Montpeiller so strong last week in real life.

Newcastle 32 - 21 Ulster
Good game here. Im a fan of Ulster and think they have a strong side and cause problems here. Ultimately though Falcons at home with some word class players should pull away near the end

Biaritz 16- 20 Saracens
Great pack battle here with Biarritz shading the front 5 and Sarries the back row. Sarries are a step up in the backs though particularly at 10 with Trinc Duc in great form for club and country. And with Houghard and Farrell to come in and see out the game thing Sarries should pick up the away win here.

Irish 26-16 Quins
Cracking game on show here. Irish with some serious scrummagers on show at prop. The Quins 2nd row will provide good support but Castro will get at Marler. Lineout time both sides should hit there jumpers. Quins with an edge round the park though due to that 2nd row combo. Backrow battle falls to Irish though. Better form to Irish and a better balance with an out and out fetcher on show.

Halfbacks a one a piece. Priestland in great form for Steve but much prefer Pieneer at SH. In the backs think the Irish midfield can get on top especially with more front foot ball. Beginning to agree with Pete on SBW but on the front foot his offloading is seriously dangerous. Both back threes are strong though and can do some damage. While both sides have some impact on the bench.

Irish at home can get on top in the pack here and with more ball they can do some damage particularly through midfield

Biarritz 17-22 Saracens

Titanic front row battle that cancels each other out, Jones/Barcella glaring case last week. Think Sarries then take control in back 5. Great lock pairing and stronger backrow. Think Sarries look better set out in the backs with a tidy centre partnership and strong back 3. I don't see many winning at Biarritz but Sarries come away with a biggy.

Irish 26-21 Harlequins

Game of the round. Irish a little bit stronger in the front row with Marler and Castro in great form for both teams. Think Marler is a little underated as a scrummager but Castro is looking back to his best. Much more class in Quins engine room but Irish shade the backrow.

Again Irish perhaps edge the halfbacks with Pienaar giving a bit more control than O'Leary and not much between Priestlsnd and Bowden, good combo's.

Backline to Irish and will probably determine the outcome of this one with some top draw players. Good game but Irish going for this one with the stronger backs see them through.

Irish 21 - 18 Quins

Think this is a really interesting game, Quins travel away with a really good front five, which is bang on form and has a huge advantage that it has an international hooker as opposed to Buckland which changes a lot. Irish have the best options of props in the league and this evens things out, but Quins could cause a lot of problems here and trouble the set piece.

They also use Priestland, which transforms the backline for them - but I think that Irish have got arguably the most physical and aggressive backlines in the game, which is incredibly hard to get through and I think it just gives them the edge to get over the gainline. Quins will get more joy with ball carrying forwards, but there are so many gainline breakers for Irish that can see them getting a lot of joy and ultimately swings the match.

Though Steven's tactics were spot on, but cant see Quins countering the threart that Irish pose in the backs. Close game.

Gloucester 43- 15 Scarlets
Bench takes this for Glos but Ben Morgan has a stormer Wink

Cardiff 12-15 Sale
Goes down to a kicking duel and I feel the Sharks pack and half backs have enough to win penalties and slot them.

Leicester 32-12 Montpellier
For a French team travelling you don't want to go to Welford Road against a side where all 15 are easily a step up (bar at 10).

Newcastle 34-21 Ulster
Ulster always travel well and will make it a ferocious pack battle. See Newcastle having the upper hand in the backs although I feel starting AAC at 12 would have made the game easier as he draws 2 tacklers to bring him down.

Biarritz 20-24 Saracens
Love the Sarries centres here and their 9-10 combination will dictate the match. I feel a side like Biarritz at home won't be a walkover and it'll take something special from JD2 and Trinder to steal the game.

Irish 20-19 Quins
See this match as being a real cracker. Great tactics from Steve and can only separate the teams with Irish having that little bit more fire in the backs. Not sure about Briggs on the bench (isn't he at Bourgoin in div2 now?).

Heineken Cup Round Two Empty Re: Heineken Cup Round Two

Post by LukeLovesLuka Fri 18 Nov 2011, 2:09 pm

Gloucester 36 - 12 Scarlets

Only areas of something close to parity for me are front row, HB's and back three. Beyond that Gloucester have way too much for Scarlets, and take a comfortable win.

Blues 24 - 22 Sale

Front row battle a good one, with Sale just about edging it. Tight back five that could go either way - Blues have some great form. See Sale taking the HB's, but beyond there Blues have a bit more about them for me. Really tough to call this one - Blues might just have enough with form and home advantage.

Newcastle 28 - 19 Ulster

Great pack battle, which I have Newcastle edging, although Ulster have some great competitors in there. HB's to the home side, and they completely outclass Ulster in the backs. Good battle up front, but Newcastle way too clinical.

Biarritz 18 - 23 Saracens

Great battle in the scrum, tough to pick a winner. Sarries have more about them in the second row, and just about take the back row. Edge at HB's as well with FTD the better 10. They just about take the backs as well but Biarritz have some dangerous runners. That bit more class throughout the side for Sarries.

Irish 26 - 22 Harlequins

Great pack battle here. Front row sides to Irish, but not by a lot. Give the second rows to Quins, but i'm really struggling to split the back rows. If pressed probably just edge to Irish with Kaino's form. Tough to split the HB's, Irish have the better centres, and arguyably the better back three. This is the deciding factor here for me.

Gloucester 27 - 20 Scarlets

Comfortable for Gloucester but Scarlets have enough to get the LBP. Gloucester are much stronger in the paclk but don't have such as big advantage in the backline.

Cardiff 25 - 23 Sale

Very good game here. I don't see any real advantage in the front rows or locks but there is a back row advantage to Sale unit although Warbs is the standout player. Half backs are tight with a slight advantage to Sale. Muvh prefer the Cardiff centres who I think will hurt Sale. Back 3's just got to Cardiff. Both benches are strong. Tough game but home advantage and parity in the pack gives Cardiff the win.

Leicester 26 - 18 Montpellier

Leicester win comfortably here in what is an good game. Leicester have the better units all over the park and only a few talented Montpellier individuals cause them to much trouble. Slightly unsure over Twelvetrees at 13.

Newcastle 28 - 26 Ulster

Newcastle have gone strong here and tbh they had to as that is a very impressive Ulster line up. Both TH's will have joy against there opposite numbers and the 2nd rows just go to Newcastle due to some decent Parling form. I'd give the back rows to Ulster with what is a formidable unit. Half backs go to Newcastle and the centres are pretty even. back 3's go to newcastle but I'd be wary of playing Amesbury in the AP as he doesn't even get on the Sale bench atm. Very good game.

Biarritz 15 - 17 Saracens

Another great game. Front 5's are evenly matched with some really good players on either side. Back row goes to Saracens. half backs to Sarries but Yach v Parra would be a great battle. Centres is another good battle with it being even. Back 3's go to Saracens but some very dangerous players in the Biaritz back 3. Good win for sarries.

Newcastle vs Ulster. 21- 17 great game. Pooly not putting out his best side by a long chalk. Front row even for me with afoa better than stanks and franks better than court and hooker even.

Second rows one a piece and backrow ulster 2-1

Newcastle experimental backline better than the well honed ulster unit and takes the game with home advantage. Think amesbury will struggle but falcons hbs much better

Have no problems excepting no comments on this weeks amlin matches for prediction bonus as none was needed but some of the Heino games definately needed predictions. As such full bonuses to Pooly, Chris, myself, Prop, Luke, Steve and Matt. Half bonus to Nick.

To get a predicting bonus you need to predict on all matches sorry ITFL. No bonus for everyone else.
