Vernon Philander joins Somerset

Somerset CCC are delighted to announce they have reached an agreement with South African all rounder Vernon Philander for him to join the club as an overseas player for April and May 2012.

Philander who is 26 years old has an impressive record with both bat and ball. He played his way into the limelight when he grabbed five for 15 on his Test debut for South Africa to bowl Australia out for 47 last month.

In first class cricket Philander has scored 2279 runs at an average of 27.13 and taken 265 wickets at a cost of 19.72, while in List A one day cricket he has scored 1180 runs at an average of 25.10 and claimed 88 wickets at 35.31.

Brian Rose the Director of Cricket at Somerset said: "Watching Vernon bowl in Cape Town against Australia recently I was immediately impressed by his ability and character in an especially demanding debut on his home ground."

Brian added: "His all round ability will be a great asset in our side and I'm sure our supporters will be éngaged by his infectious personality."

Philander's contract with Somerset is subject to his availabilty due to a possible IPL intervention.
