Hold the press, breaking news Empty Hold the press, breaking news

Post by Goosestepper Fri 27 Jan 2012, 3:00 am

World Cup winning-lock Brad Thorn is being lined up to join Heineken Cup champions Leinster on a short-term contract after the end of the Japanese season next week.

Thorn, who turns 37 on February 3, joined the Fukoaka Sanix Blues on a two-year deal after the World Cup but, with their season wrapping up next week, is reportedly in discussions with Leinster about joining them during the Japanese off-season.

The Irish club, who are coached by former Bay of Plenty coach and Blues assistant Joe Schmidt, lack depth in the second row with skipper Leo Cullen injured and Steven Sykes having returned to South Africa after an unhappy time with the European champions.

Any move would need agreement from Thorn's Japanese club and, according to reports, no official approach has been made.

Thorn played 59 tests for the All Blacks in two stints - he played rugby from 2001-2004 and then again from 2008 - but also established a highly-distinguished rugby league career for Brisbane, Queensland and Australia.

The European competition is considerably tougher than the Japanese one and will mean a lot more travel, something he said he wasn't keen to put his wife and their four young children through when he signed to play in Japan.

Munk, Ireland have lots of options at lock. Leinster don't.
It would be a great (short term) singing.

Blimey, he won't come cheap.

He's spent his whole career chasing the dollar, criss-crossing the Tasman between Oz rugby league and the All Blacks, he's got a nice Japanese pension, and now he wants to top it up in Dublin?

Good luck to him.

That might be the case, but as long as he plays well I don’t think anyone will care.

This is only a stop gap signing anyway, we’re not looking to sign him up until he’s 40.

Very good signing - a near-adequate replacement for Wagga Wink

But can Brad Thorn sit on Ferris, Mueller and Wannenburg?!

Some funny reactions to that on Twitter, one lad sends him a message to the effect of "you're a disgrace, i'm glad Leinster got rid of you, you showed no sportsmanship and should have been yellow carded!" to which Wagga just replied "Munster fan? Smile" Laugh it was a pure bollix thing to do, but you've got to admire him for it. Only two seasons here and he's still a fans favourite.

Absolutely brilliant move if it comes off. Based on his RWC form Thorn is still one of the best in the world and it will be great experience for the likes of Toner, Ruddock, McGlaughlin etc. to rub shoulders with this guy.

Very harsh.... I know he is very well liked and respected by both codes in Brisbane and in Cantebury.

Church going t-totaller, strikes me as a kind of Bakkies Botha without the thuggery. He also gets around the paddock very well bit like a 4th back row imo ( Rugby league influence maybe). I think his age is a mute point too...... if he still good enough to be selected for the all blacks...... in a world cup final............

He would be a great signing. I don't see how it would be rubbish news for the Irish national team. Leinster have lots of injuries at lock and he is a world class player. Plus Toner and the like will benefit greatly from training with such a intense, professional.

Probably because he moved to Australia when he was 8 and played rugby league there and got capped. Then he moved to New Zealand to try Union and played for the country of his birth and parentage.

I couldn’t care less if he changed countries when he changed codes, if anything it shows how good he is. The Kangaroos and the All Blacks are the pinnacle of their respective codes.

That's bad enough! Smile

If you think of Thorne as a replacement for Cullen rather than Sykes (who only played about 100 mins in his Leinster career) then you're talking about a lock who's good enough to start for the best team in the world versus a lock that can't make it into the 6th best. I know Thorne is 37 but he's obviously still got what it takes to compete at the highest level.

If it happens, and there's no smoke without kindling... It is a brilliant short-term signing. And it demonstrates the pulling-power of Leinster.

Toner would benefit most playing with him. A la Elsom - SOB. Be like an intensive 3-month course in being a total pro animal.

I hope it happens. Leinster are denying it. Thats makes it fairly certain.

Man, we miss the Ulster-dominating Hines so bad now.

Its always amusing when any fan of the provinces tries to claim the moral high ground over overseas signings. We're all in the same boat here. In terms of short term contracts over ling-term investment in players. Ulster did it, Leinster are doing it and Munster have done it and would do it again if needed.

No wonder the IRFU want to tighten the rules. Wish they went about in a more competent manner though.
