When Arthur Ashe won the 1968 US Open he received no prize money. The runner-up, Tom Okker, received $14,000

Yeah, he refused payment because he still wanted to play in the US Davis Cup team, so they gave the winner's money to Okker instead.

Under USTA control, Ashe just got his per diem, while Okker got the prize money for second place, IIRC.
