Aston Villa's Petrov diagnosed with cancer

Just a matter of hours after Villa boss Alex McLeish had ruled the Bulgarian out of Saturday's clash against Chelsea with a virus, the club released a statement revealing the diagnosis.

A club statement read: "The Villa board received news [on Friday] that our long-standing captain Stiliyan Petrov has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia.

Yep, just saw this. Tragic news, i hope that there is some way in which to over come this. Best wishes to Stillian and his faily.

acute means it becomes serious at a quick rate, acute leukemia most probably means that it will develop into late stage before treatment can be given, cancer at a less serious stage isn't normally attached with the word 'acute'

One would guess that they have caught this early - he is a professional sportsman whose health would be constantly checked and any drop in energy noted etc.

As Ko-king mentions acute means that the cancer once formed is "fast" acting so requiring rapid treatment.

Horrible news. Hope he can somehow pull through.

“Last Tuesday, after what happened to Muamba, experts came to our training ground to do tests on us and examine our hearts. Two days later, we received the results and they communicated to Stan his symptoms of cancer,”

Not quite true.

The acute tag is to differentiate it from the slower onset form of the disease, there are many diseases that cause rapid mortality without acute in the name.

It does have a worse prognosis than chronic leukaemia generally but there is nothing in the media to suggest he has not been diagnosed early etc.

The only news I've heard is that he's going under treatment. Paul Lambert says he's still the club captain, but he's thinking about who will be his team captain.

anymore news?

Last I heard he was in remission, he's in my prayers, hoping for a big friendly match between Celtic and Villa when he's ready to pull the boots back on even if its just a farewell match

Heard there would be one game At Villa Park, and one at Celtic.

Then a one off with game with former players of each club.
