Who Now? Empty Who Now?

Post by Stella Thu 31 May 2012, 9:54 am

Thanks Kevin, you have been a great ODI player but who replaces your good self?

Shah? Plays spin well

Davies? Keeps and can open.

Bell? Maybe in ODI's but has he had his chance?

Can Cook open in 20/20?

Anybody else?

Got to bring in the youngsters now. Taylor and Buttler should be brought in and maybe Vince. Need to give them a taste of intl cricket so when some of these players step up the test cricket eventually, they will have had a good few years playing 50/50 and 20/20 cricket for England at the highest level.

James Taylor I would imagine will open the innings now with Cook in ODI's and maybe with Kieswetter in T20

Haven't seen much of Taylor but is he suited to 20/20's?

I would say... For ODIs I would bring Bell in for one last, last chance - I want a quality opening pair and don't think the other options would bring me that.

T20s... Hales and Kieswetter will probably get the gig, at least for now... But opportunites for Davies, Roy, Taylor, Wright, even Bopara, and Cook and Bell to stake a claim.

Cook
Bell
Trott

Three quality batsmen but a top three? I think it may work if the next four were able to hit big and bat if needed.

You are right to flag that up... I would hope that Bell could score at a run a ball, and play the role that Mahela Jayawardene does for Sri Lanka.

Trott the ODI player has always been a dreadful conundrum... in some ways we might have been better off if we didn't pick him in the first place! But we can't argue now...

Ideally I would want:

1. Solid Opener (Cook)
2. Classy Opener (Was KP, Bell?)
3. Another top batsman (Has to be Trott)
4. Match-winner (Morgan)
5. Batsman with ability to switch gears - the Mike/ Dave Hussey role (We are lacking in this position, so Bopara)
6. Finisher (Bairstow/ Buttler)
7. All-Rounder (Patel/ Bresnan)
8. Spinner (Swann)
9. Opening Bowler 1 (Broad)
10. Opening Bowler 2 (Finn/ Anderson)
11. Variation bowler (Dernbach)/ One of Finn/ Anderson

Then we need a keeper and I can't fit Kieswetter in so will give the gloves to Bairstow/ Buttler.

Prior could easily fill your criteria for numbers 4, 5, or 6 and he'd be the best choice as keeper too Wink

I feel that Prior has had enough shots at one-day cricket to suggest he won't cut it. I think he has a particular style, which means he struggles to score quickly when the field is set as it is in one-day cricket.

Remember he had a go in India in 05-06, one in '07, another in '08-'09 and at last year's World Cup.

You can't fit Kieswetter as a keeper?

Ok scrap the classy opening batsman as its not always what we need then have Kieswetter open with Cook but keep Buttler or Bairstow as a finisher

Tricky one this. For all of KP's talk of youngsters, they haven't done much and now have a fair number of caps between them for the return of maybe one or two decent innings (I recall Bairstow in an ODI but not anything else).

So its now down to Bairstow, Taylor, Hales, Stokes, Buttler etc to start taking their chances - there are 2 or 3 batting spaces up for grabs in our ODI team I would say.

Incredible stuff. They won't drop Bairstow, I got a feeling that he'll be given the SA series as well. TBH, I only saw Bairstow in the ODI game at Cardiff. Apart from that, haven't heard that much of him. Taylor on the other hand, I have seen allot of and people are talking about him. He seems to have all the shots and a good temperament, which again is why it was a surprise to see Bairstow picked. Unfortunately, he looks like a rabbit caught in the head lights, and while I don't think England will drop him, I do think they've made a mistake in picking him in the first place.

With Pietersen gone, the side I'd go for would be:

A Cook (c)
S Davies (wk)
J Trott
R Bopara
E Morgan
J Bairstow
S Patel
G Swann
S Broad
J Anderson
S Finn

but I reckon they'll go with Kieswetter ahead of Davies.

Just thought I'd throw in my penny's worth that Taylor always seems to do well when the pressure is on and people are watching i.e. on Sky and in the Lions game. Don't think he is a T20 player though really, certainly not in England's best XI.

ODI

Cook
Kies
Trott
Morgan
Taylor
Bairstow/Buttler
Bresnan/Patel
Broad
Swann
Finn
Dernbach? Can't think of anyone else as I don't like Anderson playing ODI's unless they are in England.

Only 5 bowlers as well, with Trott as the only back up which means Ravi will probably still get a look in.

Taylor could probably open at a stretch in ODI's, but you have the same problem as opening with Bell with Cook, would it be dynamic enough?

Joe Denly had a chance a few years ago, and from what I remember he did alright but not outstanding. I always liked him as a player and if he has a good season at Middlesex now(?) he could get back in the reckoning not likely though.

And as for Taylor, I've seen an awful lot of him, although I haven't seen today's knock, and he is better as an accumulator who bats through and pushes ones and twos and stretches the field rather than being and out and out basher in the role of a KP or a Morgan. He can struggle to get the spinners away at times as well.

Like I said, I haven't seen the knock yet but going off past performances he can't walk to the middle and lash out of the ground from ball one! He can clear the ropes but not as consistently as a KP, Morgan or even a Bairstow or Buttler!

But that innings does sound magnificent. I'll check it out when I can.

Well if England are looking for a like for like replacement for Pietersen in the one-day/T20 format of the game, i.e. in terms of a tall powerful batsman who can strike the ball cleanly and hard out of the ground the only player I can see currently that fullfils this requirement is Nottinghamshire's Alex Hales.
