ROBBIE DEANS has goaded Wales by claiming the much-maligned Australia scrum is among the best in the world.

Some northern hemisphere pundits had tipped a Welsh pack, spearheaded by scrummaging master Adam Jones, to drive the Wallabies back during last weekend’s opening Test in Brisbane.

But Australia were rarely in trouble, laying the platform which gave them go-forward ball, allowing their dangerous backs to prosper.

Wallaby coach Deans insisted he wasn’t surprised and predicted more of the same ahead of today’s second rubber at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium.

It's the Leinster syndrome. Being good at getting out of trouble is not the same as being a good scrummeger, but it is effective!

The Aussie coaches always build their scrum prior to tests. I think it's partly to try and influence the referee. Scrums are subjective and there's a lot going on. When the ref thinks the Aussie scrum is rubbish, they'll generally penalize them when the scrum collapses. When the Aussies are crushed in the scrum they often struggle. Psychological warfare.

It is better than it has been in the past, but it is still behind pretty much every other top 10 test team in the world.
