RALLY co-driver Gareth Roberts has been killed in a shocking crash like the one that nearly claimed the life of Formula One star Robert Kubica.
Welshman Roberts, 24, was navigating for Irish ace Craig Breen in the Targa Florio rally in Sicily.

A guardrail pierced 22-year-old Breen's Peugeot when he crashed and Roberts was fatally injured.

The accident was an eerie carbon copy of Kubica's early last year, when the Pole suffered serious injuries to his limbs and has yet to return to racing.

Paramedics rushed to the scene of Breen’s crash, which happened on the first stage of the second day, but were unable to save Roberts.

The event, a round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, was immediately cancelled as a mark of respect.

At the time the lead was being fought out by Andreas Mikkelsen, driver for The Sun’s motorsport partners Skoda UK, and factory Skoda ace Jan Kopecky.

A close friend of Roberts said: “This is devastating. Gareth was a lovely guy, totally dedicated to the sport and one of Britain’s top up-and-coming co-drivers.

“It is a huge blow to his family and the small Welsh village where he lives. Everyone there knew him as Jaffa, though I'm not sure why.”

It's such a shame when things like this happen but motorsport is always dangerous especially going through the mountains

RIP Gareth rose
