what really impressed me was how she responded to the small blips, and how she dug out her first serves when she really needed them, like on match point. And how about that FH to get to match point?!?! Robson has finally arrived

Amazing....The Robmeister has arrived on the WTA! Her movement has improved out of sight and those groundies are world class huge with some nice hand skills too. If she can make her game more solid which will surely come then she's top 10 material for sure.

Yeah, I'm thrilled for we Brits and for Robson, but just a little sad to see Clijsters bow out in the second round of her last tournament.
Still, we can't have everything!

Re: US Open Day 3
well while all this has been going on Gasquet recovered from the loss of the first set to ease past Montanes in 4, Del Potro was a comfortable but maybe not so impressive winner over Serra (6-4 7-6 6-4) and Gulbis became the 7th man to overturn a two sets deficit in the first round as he came back to beat Haas.

Unlucky for Li Na I say!
I still think that Silver medal playing with Murray has really rubbed off on her, her belief stayed strong.
Shame for Kim but what a ride she's had. Her husband looked in pain at times with it all, he can relax now too!

Definitely. It's unlikely, but so was this! Onwards and upwards for her and who knows, maybe she can beat Li. She'll put up a better fight than Hev.

Although i love watching, i do not really know the intricacies of it. So please do not shoot me down.
But i think in the coming years, Robson will be the best Brit since Wade.

nice to see you on here skyeman. Do you mean best British woman, or just best British? best British woman is highly possible, we really haven't had much since then, and Laura has the game (and temperament) to be top 10. best British (including men) tougher to say, she may well go on to win a slam or even several, but to say right now she'll be better than Rusedski, Henman or Murray is a huge call.

If you love watching tennis, you should watch more and more, you also learn a lot about tennis that way. Who is your favourite player?
btw every week I do a weekly-round-up which you may like, if you have missed the tennis action during the week (whether it's the a Grand Slam like US Open or a smaller tournament 250), you can catch up with the most important moments: https://www.606v2.com/f164-tennis-weekly-series-archive

Re: US Open Day 3
yeah IMBL's weekly round-ups are well worth a read.
As for Robson, the reason I'm excited is her temperament more than anything. She seems to be able to pull out the big serves when she needs them, and reacts really well to disappointment. Add to that her ball striking ability, the fact she's clearly recognised her movement needs improving, and you can understand why I think she'll be top 10 one day. I first saw Laura as a 15 year-old in the juniors at RG. She actually lost that day, but I saw enough in the serve and FH to convince me she had what it takes to crack the top level.
Also, I just love the way she's so aggressive on the return of serve. Sure, it doesn't always come off, but by doing it she's putting huge pressure on her opponent.
On the negative side, her movement still needs work (though it's getting there), her ball toss is a bit wonky at times (though not as bad as Ivanovic: it's usually a bit too far forward but at least she's not chasing it). Finally, nearly every single short ball putaway on her FH she goes cross court. Opponents will eventually pick up on this.

I saw her win Junior Wimbledon aged 14. I was sceptical then but she's fulfilling potential already. She's only 18, she'll be top 20 by 20 or maybe even sooner.

Thank you IMBL, i always read the tennis threads, but never comment. {More infighting than the cricket i guess} Not that i am adverse to the odd ruckus there
Favourite: Used to be Mcenroe but now Murray.

We do get people with difference of opinions, who believe in it strongly, but I don't really see real bad blood between posters- (just a difference in opinion)
Ah, you liked J-mac interesting. His rants to the umpire always divided opinion, didn't it!

Laura can take inspiration from Sharapova. Not the best mover yet can smack the ball very hard, plus she doesn't grunt!! Arguably a better serve than Sharapova too.

Re: US Open Day 3
I now agree with those that offered the opinion that Heather Watson, will "Max out" as a top fifty player - maybe reaching top thirty, but being blown away by the top elite players. Laura Robson however has a big time player capacity within her. She could become a top ten player.
ps Robson has always been competitive against the elite players, whereas Watson hasn't. Things might change for Watson but probably not soon.

Used to watch Durie, but could not remember her having done so well:
Aus q/f, US s/f, Wim q/f and RG s/f.
Robson has to go some for me to be proven right.

so far so very good from Murray, playing good aggressive tennis and not letting Dodig have a look-in. Big FH winner down the line and he takes the first set 6-2. Nice
Is it me or is the ball going through the court quicker in the night session?

more huge hitting from Murray earns him two more BPs, and though he's fractionally long on the second, a lovely return fired at Dodig's feet gets the job done at the second attempt. 4-1 and a double break

challenge ding dong
Dodig challenges one of his second serves which was called out. Just clipped the line. Murray then challenges Dodig's serve on the replayed point which was called let (but in). Spot on, and he promptly dispatches the second serve for a disdainful winner. Two points later and the set is his 6-1 with yet another break of serve.

at 15-30 Dodig has a peek and sniffs a chance to get back into the match. Murray looks up, slams a couple of big FHs and an ace down, and the door is shut firmly in Dodig's face.

and there's the break. A staggeringly good FH pass from Murray makes up for a couple of loose shots and hands him BP, and Dodig duly double faults.

Murray with a sloppy service game, but Dodig makes two poor FH errors when he gets to BP, and some good solid net play take Murray to 5-2

Re: US Open Day 3
Many in the crowd leaving early knowing the result was a foregone conclusion, even at 3-1 in the third.
Easy day at the office for Murray in the end other than a slight wobble in the third with a couple of break points against him whilst leading 4-2, but came back. Comfortably winning 6-2 6-1 6-3 inside the two hour mark with his serving vastly improved. B/h, f/h both looking very sharp. Sterner tests to come.

and there it is! A comfortable hold gives Murray the match 6-2 6-1 6-3, a much better performance than in the first round, particularly on serve. Onwards and upwards, a very satisfying day for the Brits
