191 all out for Notts in 2nd Innings, so Surrey need 259 to win. Probably beyond them, and weather looks dodgy for tomorrow. Shame their last wicket pair put on 30 - that could prove decisive.

Roy gone already, Adams alone knows why he is opening in this match!

For those who go to games, how come Roy is so good at one day yet can't do anything in the CC?

Chances of victory very small, though Burns has at least offered possibility of avoiding complete humiliation.
Anyone know how the run out came about?
If ever is the time for the Brain to get a century now is it.

Once again we've just been a bit behind the hwole time and will ultimately fall short again I think. Like I said before Roy opening is stupid but looked like he got a bit of a brute of a ball that got big on him and took the edge. Pleased that the bowlers did their job well today but a shame about the 30 runs for the last wicket.
To be fair it's remarkable we're still in the game after being 47-5 on day 2.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
I wouldn't say Surrey have 'the edge' but its probably more even than some in here are suggesting. Two front-line batsmen (including the in-form Burns) at the crease; Davies, Wilson and Batty to come. And just 170 to get against a mediocre Notts bowling attack missing Andre Adams.
Of course, the scores have been getting lower as the match goes on. But I haven't heard anything suggesting the pitch is a minefield. Therefore, it should be an enticing final day.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
I understand where Shelsey is coming from but don't fancy our chances.
Yes, the Notts attack is missing their Adams but 5 of their bowlers delivered effectively in the first innings. Even if 1 or 2 misfire today, they should still have a few options.
3 leading batsmen already gone and usually a pitiful tail to follow the middle order. Chuck into the mix the possibility of showers to break the batsmen's concentration and, as Shelsey says, each innings score having got lower as the match has gone on - it doesn't look good.
I agree that a win is not impossible but we are going to need a fine performance from at least two of our remaining batsmen. To expect them to turm it around so much after some of those same players left us wobbling precariously on day two at 47-5 is a big ask ....

144 all out - pathetic. 71 for 7 today. How is that acceptable Adams? I'd drop the whole blooming lot of them.

114 run defeat in a low scoring match - outplayed in every department for the second match running. It doesn't help that we win the toss..................... we're just a really poor team

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
JimBob - as you probably saw, I disagreed with Shelsey's take on things at the time. However, I understood it.
What I cannot understand is the lack of application and fight from the batsmen. With Smith gone, we seem a very brittle bunch. Particularly disappointing given the pretty decent efforts of our 3 frontline seamers during both Notts' innings.
Very hard to see how we turn things round other than expecting miracles from Ponting upon arrival.

guildford what was the game in recent years when we turned up on the final day needing about the same score or maybe less and they put up no effort?

JimBob - thinking about it, you might have had in mind the match at Lord's last year where we somehow conjured up a defeat to Middlesex by about 4 runs!

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
I think this match confirms that our batting just isn't good enough at the moment. Burns is very good but very young, Harinath can be solid but not going to be spectactular, Solanki and Brain are past it. Wilson is pretty dependable and should be up the order, Roy is being deployed in completely the wrong position in the order but is still failing to show any kind of form in the CC.
So despite our bowlers being pretty good we can't afford to help them out with our pitches as our batsmen aren't good enough to cope.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
I think Surrey's season so far:
a/ confirms my suspicions that Maynard and Hamilton-Brown were more important players than some are giving them credit for: by this time last year they had turned a couple of draws/ defeats into victory.
b/ confirms my suspicions that Solanki and Keedy were not acquisitions likely to improve the team.
c/ suggests that they are far from ready to challenge for title yet.
All is not lost. You have 3 international bowlers (albeit 3 international bowlers that don't like to bowl well all at the same time), one of the better spinners around, and a more than decent crop of young players. However, it goes without saying that wins are needed and quick to avoid a relegation battle.
I'd also suggest that you need to find a way to utilise certain players better. For instance, I don't think Roy's a Championship opener and Wilson is surely wasted at 7. It would make far more sense for Burns and Harinath to open, with Solanki 3, Wilson 4, Roy 5, Davies 6 and de Bruyn 7. In the bowling I'd suggest George Edwards or Tom Jewell or Matt Dunn must be due a go, though it is hard to see how they fit in.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Shelsey - agree with pretty much all of that except I would bring Jewell in for de Bruyn and play him at 7, couldn't do much worse with the bat and is a much better bowler. Linley, Dernbach and Meaker all averaging 30 or under this season which I'm happy with so stick with them for now, Tremlett/the rest can wait.
On a lighter note has everyone seen Linley's appeal when he got Lumb out yesterday? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oURS9d7rdJY&feature=share&list=UUZLlXPWxwCtQxrspxx8pU-Q
