Most Entertaining Straight Sets Victories
watching todays match lacking a lot of drama I thought, can straight set matches ever be great?
What are the greatest straight sets matches in history? Can a match that goes one direction from start to finish be tight or epic?
Just a few off the top of my head:
Federer bt Djokovic US Open '09 7-6 7-5 7-5
Djokovic bt Federer Aus Open '11 7-6 7-5 6-4
Murray bt Djokovic Olympics '12 7-5 7-5
Nadal bt Djokovic Queens '08 7-6 7-5
Federer bt Ljubicic Miami '06 7-6 7-6 7-6
Any others spring to mind? Can they ever be classics?

Sampras beat Agassi 1999 Wimbledon is the best straight setter I can think off at the moment.

Federer beating Davy in the SF of the French - not sure which year it was. Nadal beating Murray at the French in 2011 was a top match as well.

Not as good as McEnroe in his prime thrashing Jimmy Connors 6-1 6-1 6-2 in the 1984 Wimbledon final! I have always wondered how the prime McEnroe of that 1984 Wimbledon final would have done had he had to play Ivan Lendl that year who he had lost to at the French Final, or even indeed Kevin Curran whom thrashed a less than match-fit and out of form McEnroe in the quarters at Wimbledon in 1985.

Good article, interesting idea.
In terms of one sided displays; RG 08 and WTF 2011 were good quality between Nadal and Federer.
I actually pick one from the article- AO 2011 semi.

WTF last year, Djokovic vs Federer. US'07 was extremely tight between them as well. AO'08 likewise, all entertaining matches.
Would agree with AO 2011 SF too, and AO '07 Federer vs Roddick for a completely ridiculous display from one player.
Nadal d. Djokovic at Queens definitely, awesome match.
Federer vs Santoro, US Open '05 I think. Sampras vs Agassi '99. Argh, so many great matches.

Agassi beating Woodforde 6-0 6-0 at Vienna Indoors 95 was an awesome spectacle. Sampras beating Agassi in straights 6-3 6-4 7-5 Wimb99 is still highest level of attacking tennis I've seen yet.

Re: Most Entertaining Straight Sets Victories
Federer d Hewitt @US 2004 - 6-0, 7-6(3), 6-0
Federer d Hewitt @Basel 2000 - 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(6)
Karlovic d Federer @ Cincy 2008 - 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(5)
Federer d Santoro @ USO 2005 (not 2004) - 7-5, 7-5, 7-6(2)
Federer d Ferrer @Basel 2006 - 6-3, 7-6(14)
Lendl d McEnroe @World Team Cup 1985 - 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 (This is the Dusseldorf Clay which is now Power Horse).
Laver d Rosewall @LA 1968 - 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.
There is a match in Berkeley, CA where Laver laid 5-4 40-0 serving for the mach in the third, but Rosewall saved the MPs, and beat Laver 7-5. It is mentioned in Laver's book, but I am not sure whether the year is 1968 or 1972. Will take a look.

Federer d Roddick W 2005 final - along with Sampras beating Agassi probably the best demolition I've seen in a W final. Sublime stuff.
Screech d Federer AUS 2011 - fantastic match
Screech d Federer WTF 2012
Federer d Hewitt USO 6-0 7-6 6-0

I echo Djokovic v Federer WTF 2012.
I also like straight sets wins when they are a masterclass, so I'll also say:
Federer v Roddick AO2007
Federer v Nadal WTF 2011

Ah, how could I forget Federer beating Nadal at the WTF. I'll give that the award for more entertaining single hour of tennis I've ever seen, although I may be extremely biased in that.

Just looked on wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_Wimbledon_Championships_%E2%80%93_Men%27s_Singles
Mcenroe lost 1 set in 1984 wimbledon in R1 on a TB after that he stormed through.

Mac won one point while sitting down in the forecourt in that match. Summed it up.

Re: Most Entertaining Straight Sets Victories
I have a very short attention span and tend to forget the intensity of individual matches as others come and go, but I can still remember the Djokovic df Federer at the WTF final and I think both players were brilliant, and yet Djokovic came through in straights!
I do remember thoroughly enjoying McEnroe demolishing Connors - but I can't remember if Connors was off, or Mac just sublime.

What a fantastic choice, CAS. Possibly the best I've seen Murray play, and definitely the best display of returning in the last decade for me. I actually felt sorry for Raonic who was serving and playing very well, but got his doors blown off.

You do agree about the turnaround from AO 2009 to USO 2009, though, don't you?
