IF these two can just stay in til the close, we should be close to parity. We'd then need to survive til tea to get a draw!
In other news, Somerset have lost, Derby also look like losing, but Warwicks look like get a big win

186 for 2 at stumps 26 behind
a excellent day apart from the stupid run out

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Looks like the Baron dug in well.
Need him to do at least another three hours tomorrow! I suspect we will need to bat until quite a bit past tea tomorrow to be safe as Notts would strongly fancy their chances of scoring, say, 160 off 32 overs. Article on Cricinfo says:
"Harinath as a spectacle takes a lot of getting used to. He finds fielders often, which can frustrate spectators, but does so with an air of assurance that quickly becomes infectious. At 26 years of age, he is somewhat of a late bloomer, more down to a lack of opportunities than performance, but credit to Surrey for affording him the chance to prove them right."
The entire tail is on a pair. That could be an unfortunate bit of history if four batsmen in a row all bagged a pair.
Pleased that Ansari got another wicket today - he needs to perform as a bowler if his batting is not exactly prospering at the moment.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Corporal - was there today and very much agree with your take on things.
The Baron did a very difficult job very well (other than his contribution to the mix up for Solanki's run out). Punter also a complete class act to the end; in his final fc innings, he was still playing practice shots at the non striker's end.
Earlier Dernbach bowled really well and deserved his morning's wickets. Ansari also merited his further wicket.
We now have to bat out nearly all of tomorrow. The pitch is still good to very good so I see no way of us taking 10 wickets in the last couple of hours. As you say, 160 off 32 overs should be very feasible for Notts. We beat Notts at home last year and could have done the same again now if we hadn't so utterly mucked up day one.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Hi JimBob - working from home today. Lots to catch up on after 2 days at the Oval but still occasionally looking in here and keeping an ear out now and again for Churchy.
Had hoped we could get to lunch for the loss of only one more wicket. Well, that was blown out of the water after 10 minutes! Two of the top five being run out when the priority is to "just stay there" is dreadful.
Not feeling confident. Adams and Patel both bowled well yesterday and if they repeat that could get a few wickets today.
Back around lunch ....

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Wise words re Ponting from JDizzle, our esteemed visiting expert. Disappointed not to see Ponting's ton today but felt privileged to witness the start of his final innings yesterday.
This partnership is so vital. Don't see the final 4 featuring in anything more than "bits and pieces" partnerships.
Btw, JDizzle - your hero Jimmy Taylor fielded well yesterday, continually scampering around to get the ball. For such a small man, he has a long and accurate throw.

He's a great pair of hands too Guildford. Very good fielder. Hopefully, although not for you guys, he'll have some batting to do later on to to redeem Keedy doing him like a kipper first up!
Ponting is a hero though. His 156 at Old Trafford '05 is probably the best knock I've seen. He doesn't know when a game is lost!

JD - yep, it's not just about the number of runs for a great knock but the circumstances of the innings.JDizzle wrote:

Not exactly a captain's performance - but then again he hasn't really done much since he came back to the club. A prime example of where Surrey have gone wrong in recent years.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Wow! You don't have to watch the Ashes for cricket excitement!
I think there are 34 overs left meaning we would face 167 in this knock if they were all used up. JimBob - do you know if 34 left is right?
Take off an over in which the last wicket(s) falls and 2 more for a change of innings and Notts have a max of 31 left to get the runs. They should be able to do that on this track but every extra over we can bat out and scrape a few more runs it becomes more difficult for them ....

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
In these days of 20/20 - and even without any fielding restriction circles - we'd not be remotely safe unless they needed 8+ an over. I seem to remember somebody chasing down +/-300 against us @ 10 an over in a Day 4 final session last time we were relegated from CC1. Embarrassing!!
So we probably need to hold out another 10 overs at least to have the slightest chance of the draw we so richly don't deserve (...with the honourable exception of Punter).

Surrey and Ponting save the game.
Magnificent rearguard action after a dreadful day one and terrible 10 minutes at the start of today.
There's a case for Ponting being capped for his brief but magnificent contribution. (Smith was capped at lunchtime on his first day.)

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Superb way for Ponting to finish his first class career.
Remarkable that Dernbach survived unbeaten for 77 balls. And Ansari showing, as he has done a few times before, that he can really dig in, even if as yet he has not assembled any sort of batting average in the first class game.
That hard earned draw in effect gains back the batting points we tossed away on day one. Will it kick start our cc season again? Probably not! Now we are two points behind Somerset. Only two teams have lost fewer games than Surrey.
