Re: surrey vs essex lv county championship
Thanks for the thread, JimBob.
Not that surprised by the Viscount missing out. The vibes I picked up at Guildford this week were that whilst there was an hour of madness with the bat against Glamorgan (and an hour of brilliance with the ball by Wagg), there was general disappointment with our bowlers over the two innings. Tremlett was initially looking like he would be in the firing line but has saved his place with a good showing in the Guildford game whilst Linley again struggled.
Pretty sure the last place tomorrow will be between Curran and Dunn. Very hard to call but I suspect Dunn will start.
The seconds have a 3 day friendly at Gloucs starting on Monday. A few trialists will need to come in for that , probably including Tom Lancefield.

On the basis of the named team sheet and today's bowling figures, have Roy (3rd change and due in at 7) and Ansari (DNBowl and due in at 4) swapped roles over the winter??

Ansari crashed into a boundary board and had to go to hospital with suspected concussion. Hence Roy was called upon to bowl.

Re: surrey vs essex lv county championship
People are, righly, very careful with concussion these days. Given the risk of being hit, particularly whilst batting, I doubt he'll play a further part in this game. Hopefully it won't cause problems. Sometimes seemingly innocuous concussions can cause all sorts of long-term difficulties. The Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has never been the same since bumping his head in the field at The Oval in 2011. Correlation isn't always causation, and other factors may have caused Gambhir's slump, but his failure to to get anywhere close to his previous high standards despite being at the perfect age for a batsman has led some to suggest that that apparently minor injury has had lasting effects.

Re: surrey vs essex lv county championship
Hi folks - was at the game today. Could have been even more serious for Ansari. Like many, I generally think Elf N Safety concerns are overblown but today's incident was always on the cards. Ansari uncharacteristically allowed a drive to go through him and then set off in hot pursuit to try and make up for his error. Unfortunately, the boundary rope on that side of the ground (Archbishop Tenison School) was only about two feet from the wooden fence. Almost proving it was an accident waiting to happen, Ansari slid head first at speed over the rope and into the fence. It sounds like he's not too seriously hurt but with the possibility of concussion I'm not sure how quickly he'll be able to return.
Dunn was Surrey's stand out player and deserved his 3 wickets. Bowled with pace and accuracy. Meaker not far behind whilst Dernbach was a little wayward. Tremlett was pretty accurate but only occasionally threatening. Roy bowled Ansari's overs tidily and picked up Bopara's wicket (cracking catch by Davies diving on the leg side). The fielding was generally good with a few other decent catches.
With 2 days now gone, hard to see anything but a draw (although I said that last time!!). Essex might be criticised by some for being slow but I feel the onus was on us to take wickets having won the toss and put them in. I would therefore say that at 220 odd/6, Essex narrowly had the better of the day. They'll be disappointed though that five batsmen got past 20 but none reached 50. Cook was playing very fluently and making it look rather easy when Dunn surprised him with a bit of extra pace and height.

Latest on Ansari is that he will not take part in play today and will be assessed again tomorrow.

Thanks for the report guildford - I saw the Ansari incident on telly, it looked horrific! I notice only 78 overs yesterday, did they start late or go off at all? Good stuff from Clive, pity we never seem to get a 'partnership' of bowlers!
I'll take a draw now, with hopefully a decent high scoring 1st Inns from us (but with that batting line up, I'm doubtful)

Re: surrey vs essex lv county championship
Thanks, Goochie. It bucketed down heavily for about half an hour just after 12.30. Even with lunch being taken early and the ground staff working hard, an hour was lost by the time the mopping up was complete. It was planned to regain some of the lost overs by playing on until late but bad light put a stop to that (yes, they do have floodlights but all to do with the imbalance between natural and artificial light - don't ask!). That and the one rain interruption aside, it was a mainly sunny day!
I think the draw is strong favourite from here. Could be further rain today. With Essex already having first innings runs on the board, almost impossible to see us forcing a win now.

Re: surrey vs essex lv county championship
Just following play now and again on cricinfo today.
After a late start due to early morning rain, Essex scored 306 all out. They'll be pleased with that and particularly a third batting point thanks to a last wicket partnership of 27 between Panesar and Mills (he bats after Panesar which should tell you everything!).
A fivefer for 'Clive' Dunn who built on yesterday's success.
However, very disappointing that our three England seamers couldn't wrap things up quicker and a lot more cheaply.
As mentioned earlier to Goochie, with Essex having a decent score on the board I can only see us drawing or losing from here. With no Ansari today, important the top order do their job.

And I thought you had come on to congratulate me on predicting the starting eleven!

Anyway, well done to Smith. If we had lost him early on and with Ansari reduced to eating grapes and watching daytime tv, we could have been in some trouble. Must surely be a draw from here - let's hope we can get a few batting points ....

Well bowled "Clive" Dunn
For someone still at school Sibley seems to be getting in quite a bit of cricket!
Hopefully he can build on his start of 20* at tea.

Wilson gets out carelessly for 18. Looking a bit dodgy now with Surrey having a long tail and Ansari unable to bat.

Sibley gone for 34. Falling to Mills - the two Essex chaps I spoke to on the way to the ground yesterday regarded him as ''too inconsistent'' and referred to any England talk as ''ridiculous''.
Anyway, Corporal, you're right that Sibley is getting quite a bit of cricket - I understand his school have agreed to his appearances so it's not as if he's bunking off! He must though hang up his bat for a while soon as he's got A-levels next month. Our batting resources might be very stretched when we play Kent at Canterbury in early May - as well as Sibley probably being unavailable for that, Wilson is expected to be with Ireland at the same time and it's unlikely Solanki will be back soon.
Now 169/5 with Wilson and Davies also back in the hutch. With Ansari injured, that's effectively 6 down. What was I saying about batting bonuus points?

Corporal - that's a good point. It was always a stretch having Meaker at 8 on the scorecard. Having to move him up a place just emphasises that.
Did you see that Batty batted at 3 for the seconds yesterday? I think the aim / hope is for him to rediscover some batting form and come back into the firsts at number 8 once conditions are more spin friendly. Sadly, if that is the experiment, it didn't work yesterday - Batty was out for a duck!

Meaker probably a more natural no 7 than Batty a no 3.
Both Roy and Tremlett have already been dropped. Need to make Essex pay with a partnership of double figures...

217/6 at stumps, trailing by 89 runs with 4 wickets left (or 3 if Ansari remains unavailable).
Decent partnership between Roy and Tremlett as the Corporal says above. Good as well to see Dunn carry on his good work from yesterday and for Smith to get some Surrey runs under his belt. However, still Essex's day as Surrey's England bowlers failed to properly deliver and our middle order failed to build on Smith's start.

Roy's highest championship score last season was 17 so he's already doing better although he has been dropped. Best we can hope for tomorrow is to scrape at least 1 batting point and give the bowlers some confidence, hopefully no dramatic/ridiculous defeat this time.

The tail failed to wag yet again! Even with Ansari out, 237 is a poor total after being 100-odd for 1.

Agreed.
On a trivia footnote, in his 9 first-class matches 'Clive' Dunn has yet to be dismissed. He's batted 8 times with a top score of 2 not out, one score of 1 not out and six 0 not outs.

Looks like we're going to escape with a 'losing' draw.
The positives being Clive's 'Michelle'...............that's a Pfeiffer the lad! Smudger's half century, and a half decent knock by the boy Roy

I see that Dunn has faced 42 balls in his eight not out innings. Maybe he should push for promotion above Jade in the line up.

Cricinfo refer to Dernbach's second ball dismissal for a duck as ''a wild hack to leg''. As Roy was at the other end and we were still after a second batting point at the time, the words ''brains'', ''not having'' and ''born with'' come to mind!
