Lucha Underground airs on the El Rey network every Wednesday night. The following are detailed results and a review of the debut episode, which aired this week.

Lucha Underground
October 29, 2014

-A cute ring announcer welcomes us to Lucha Underground. Matt Striker introduces himself, then Vampiro, and they hype tonight’s show.

-Lucha Underground host, promoter and owner Dario Cueto is introduced, and makes his way to the ring. Vampire notes that he’s not Mexican, he’s Spanish, so “people don’t like him”. Cueto says that this building isn’t a stadium where children cheer for their heroes, it’s his temple, where they honor traditions like honor and violence. He opens a briefcase to reveal $100,000, and says the luchador who impresses him the most tonight gets a signing bonus.

BLUE DEMON, JR. vs. CHAVO GUERRERO, JR.

We get a respectful handshake to start the match. They lock up and Chavo takes him down with an arm drag, but Demon traps him in a headscissors. Another old school lock up with both hands, and Demon wins the trade. They end up fighting to the floor and Chavo gets slapped in the face, then another hard slap back in the ring. Demon keeps slapping him, hard, and takes advantage of the angry response with a tilt-the-whirl backbreaker. Chavo comes back with a headscissors takedown to the floor. Blue Demon fights back and climbs to the top rope, but comes up empty with a senton splash. Guerrero now has control and puts his opponent on the top turnbuckle, and locks in a hanging triangle choke. The move looks cool, but Demon counters it pretty easily with a powerbomb from the top. He follows up with El Pulpo (modified Sharpshooter) for the submission.

Winner: BLUE DEMON, JR.

Recorded promo with Dario Cueto and Konnan, where they talk about bringing in the greatest lucha stars in the world. Konnan claims he has the best and he’ll be bringing him to Lucha Underground. Cueto says he hired the biggest free agent in the world, Johnny Mundo (Morrison) to make an example of him. He tells Konnan to have his man take out Mundo, and he may win the $100,000.

-Vignette for Prince Puma, where Konnan talks about his history and the background of lucha being in his blood. He says the Aztecs used to take the heads of their conquered enemies, and that’s why they take the masks of their opponents in lucha. Konnan puts Prince Puma over as an Aztec warrior and the future of pro wrestling.

SON OF HAVOC vs. SEXY STAR

Before the match starts, Havoc says he refuses to fight a woman, and tells Sexy Star to leave the ring and get counted out. She waits until he has his back turned, and rushes the ring to fire away with right hands. Havoc comes back with shoulder tackles, which gets huge heat. He comes up empty on a moonsault attempt, and Sexy hits a headscissors takedown. Havoc takes her down with a big boot, and then bullies her around the ring. She sends him crashing into the corner, and hits a top rope crossbody for two. She runs into a neckbreaker, and Havoc picks up the three by pulling the tights.

Winner: SON OF HAVOC

In another recorded segment, Cario Cueto is berating Chavo Guerrero for tapping out to Blue Demon, Jr. He asks what his grandfather and uncles would think, and says he will definitely not be getting the $100,000. He says he’ll be bringing in another man next week to actually get the job done. By the way, these backstage segments are filmed with a lot of dark filters, a ton of soap opera-style drama, and a little reality TV flair. Really interesting.

PRINCE PUMA vs. JOHNNY MUNDO

This is John Morrison and Ricochet, which is something of a minor dream match for anybody that follows wrestling outside WWE. Konnan is ringside for his protege.

Mundo takes him down to start the match, but Puma kips up too fast to see. They lock up and do a ton of counter-wrestling, with each guy narrowing avoiding every move, and it ends with Mundo kipping up and shrugging off the assault. Headscissors takedown by Prince Puma with about four total rotations, and he looks to go suicide dive to the floor, but Mudno moves out of the way; Puma catches it in time and rebounds off the ropes. Stalemate.

Back in the ring and they lock up again, with Mundo getting a backbreaker, followed by a corkscrew spin kick. Prince comes back with a springboard splash, and locks in a variation on a rear triangle choke. Mundo reverses into a calf lock, but they fight to their feet and he gets caught with a major kick to the head. They end up fighting over to the commentary desk, so Striker and Vampiro clear out. Mundo does some parkour over the table and follows up with a flapjack into the ringpost.

Loud “LUCHA” and “THIS IS AWESOME” chants from the people. Eventually they make their way back into the ring, and it looks like these guys are still fresh. Puma flies out of the corner with a lariat, followed up with an uppercut. Crossbody for two, and that was the first pin attempt of the night. He tries for a standing moonsault, misses, but connects with a standing shooting star press.Mundo comes back and rushes him into the turnbuckles, pounding away with rights and lefts. He hits a stiff short-arm clothesline, followed by a flying kick. A running kick lands for two, and Mundo hypes the crowd for some kind of finisher. He sets up in the corner, but is rolled up for a close two-count.

Mundo again tries for his finish but Puma pulls himself out of the ring and springboards off the ropes with a flying knee. Now he goes to the high rent district for a 450 splash, but nobody is home. The Mundo Drive connects (Morrison’s Moonlight Drive), followed by a standing S.O.S. type move. He hits the End of the World (Starship Pain) for the 1-2-3 in an incredible match.

Winner: JOHNNY MUNDO

-After the match, Cueto makes his way out with the briefcase and says Mundo has earned his prize. Mundo and Prince Puma are both attacked from behind by two guys that came out of nowhere. I believe they would be Ricky Reyes and Lil’ Cholo, although the commentary team didn’t mention them by name. Ezekiel Jackson hits the ring and the beatdown continues. Cueto says it’s not only lucha stars that compete in his temple, and these guys work for him. He says “welcome to Lucha Underground” as the heels stand over Mundo and Puma, and Matt Striker takes us off the air.

Looks fun. Almost reads like one of this site's WWA shows, especially with the randomness of Ezekiel Jackson rocking up at the end Laugh

Is there a link to see this online?

It's only a 45 minute show but seems good fun, Apparently Ricochet vs Jomo is very very good

To be fair, for an up and coming hispanic independent promotion, Chavo is still a huge name.

Watched the 2nd episode and I'm liking the product. I suspect I was so low on the opening one because they started off with Chavo.

IMO this and NXT are the most watchable wrestling shows at the moment, primarily because they are circa 1 hour wrestling shows. Simples really innit?

You guys should consider watching Ring Of Honor's weekly TV show. Free to sign up and watch with each weekly episode only 45 minutes! (They cut out the adverts from a 1 hour show that airs in the US) This week's main event is AJ Styles up against Matt Sydal AKA Evan Bourne.

Production has come on leaps and bounds from last year
