CONGRATULATIONS: Djokovic Celebrates 142nd Week at #1
A significant achievement.
http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2015/04/15/Djokovic-142-Weeks-No-1-Emirates-ATP-Rankings.aspx
"Today, Novak Djokovic has moved into outright sixth place in the list of players who have spent the most weeks at No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings.
Djokovic has been at the top of men's professional tennis for 142 weeks, one week more than Rafael Nadal, and now he has his sights set on John McEnroe on 170 weeks.
With a 4,310 point lead over No. 2-ranked Roger Federer in the Emirates ATP Rankings, if the Serbian were to maintain his firm grip on No. 1, which he reclaimed on 7 July 2014, he would start his 171st week at No. 1 on 9 November this year.
After that only Jimmy Connors (268 weeks), Ivan Lendl (270 weeks), Pete Sampras (286 weeks) and all-time leader Federer (302 weeks) are in front of Djokovic for most weeks spent at No. 1."
Congratulations Novak!
So how many of us saw this coming?

It's an impressive number.
I think he'll very likely get past McEnroe but the next group are probably out of reach.

Will be cementing his place as best all around player of his generation over the next couple years. He may even have a shot at Federer Year End #1 5 times or Sampras 6! Congrats!!

Re: CONGRATULATIONS: Djokovic Celebrates 142nd Week at #1
I think he now stands at an important point in his career.
Based on what he has already achieved, 8 slams and 142+ weeks as #1 secures his standing as a great of the game.
But with some good form, some concentration and probably a little luck along the way, there is the potential to move into that 'Tier 1' group of Federer, Nadal, Sampras, Borg and Laver.
To my mind, two more slams would do it.
For that to happen, I think 2015 has to be a multi-slam year. If he begins 2016 still on 8, I think he will fall short of that top tier.

Well he's going to be winning atleast 4 more slams, so that should be fine.

My tier 1 group is Federer, Rosewall, Laver, Tilden and Gonzalez. It's hard to make a case that Sampras or Borg or Nadal had a statistically better record, or acheived more in their career, than Rosewall or Gonzalez.
Sampras, Borg and Nadal are only in the tier 2 group, although Rafa could be in the tier 1 group by career end, is already at the top of the tier 2 group.

The top four in the rankings are really close together. Once you overhaul Connors at no 4, you can attack the others quite quickly. Maybe 20-30% chance he'll get to #1 on the list. Really needs to be no 1 for the next 3 years for most of that time. Of course, if Federer could get back to no 1 himself, and have even half a year there, that would do a lot of damage to the chances.

The stat that he has taken 17 out of 35 masters since 2011 is an impressive one. Even though it only includes one he actually contested. An MC win would bring that up to exactly 50%.

Just checked their stats and it turns out Rosewall has won more pro slam finals and slams than laver! 23 to 20 with Gonzalez on 17. Interesting.

I believe in a 4-slam open era all three of Rosewall, Gonzalez and Laver might well have won 20+ slams. I'll post some more details on the GOAT sticky: if anyone's interested, head over there.

Praps a little early to talk about Djoko surpassing's Fed 302 weeks at the top.
But Nole could well stay at numero uno for the whole of this year and he's certainly chalking up the weeks. When Rafa first reached number one in 2008 (yes, it was that long ago) I thought he would comfortably beat Rog's record.
But first Rog put in quite a few more weeks in 2009/10 (and a few more later as well) and then along came Djoko. Interesting that even adding Rafa's weeks at the top to Nole's they still cannot top Rog's total.

By end of this year, if either Novak or Rafa ends the year as no.1 and provided Fed doesnt get to no.1, their total weeks at no.1 will surpass that of Fed's.

Well the other two have chalked up more than 280 weeks so, yes, their combined total will be more than Rog's 302 by the end of the year.
Awful long way to go for either of them, though, to get the record on their own. Djoko, for example, would have to stay top for more than another three years continuously to do it.

I think Djokovic has already made a lasting impression on tennis, I think he would need to get to 11 and the career slam to be tier 1 but there isn't exactly a quota! I would be surprised if he did't reach that anyway
I was listening to the guys on sky earlier, and they were saying regardless if he doesn't win another match, he is someone who has changed the game, sliding on hard courts, split step backhands etc

I see Djokovic as clearly the best player in the world right now, but that's a bold prediction- over 3 years of being #1 is what he needs to catch Federer- more weeks than he's spent at #1 so far. You repeatedly say Nadal is already declining in large part due to age, but you expect Djokovic not to decline in his late 20's,early 30's and actually amass more weeks at #1 in the end stages of his carreer than he was able to do during the early and prime stages?
He's the only current player with a shot at Federer, but it's a gutsy call Amri! I like it! We'll revisit it in a few years!

Indeed ! I know most will think it's unlikely, but I think he'll be able to do it even when his game declines a bit.TRuffin wrote:

No wonder, Rafa is a part time player anyway.
Well done to Djoko.
P.S: Blue Moon is that you? I got it from your weird fonts, they are either bigger then normal, or now compact/busy, what are you doing to the fonts?

You never know who will rise up, but it does look like it will be a young gun that will have to do it. Federer is reducing his schedule clearly, skipped Miami, said this week he will prob skip Rome, Montreal unlikely-- so he won't be playing a schedule to amass enough points and even if he tried, his legs would give out at his age trying to play that much, Nadal- you are an expert on him and feel it's unlikely he can get there, Murray is simply not on a level that can beat out djokovic consistently............so I see your point that Djokovic has a clear landscape ahead of him. Still- 3 years is a long time to try and make up-- that in itself is more weeks than all but 5 or 6 players all time could amass!

Yes, it's me. Just changed username today. Like matchpoint so much better, more tennis-y. Never mind the fonts, Djokovic's overtaken Nadal in you-know-what. Don't knock the clay king. 14 slams is not bad for a part time player. Now we have to wait at least 3 years to see if he can overtake Federer's.

No way. Djoko will crush himself internally, get bored being number one, public does not like him much, he knows he will never be loved as Fed & Nadal, so will have a mental demise within a year

Such a shame that his nemesis Del Potro is permanently injured when he could easily challenge for number 1 at this junction. Jahu is spot on in saying Djokovic will never be as loved who could love a man who shouts and abuses ballboys and the crowd week to week?

Is that the Del Potro he has a 11-3 record against (1 of the 3 being the Olympic bronze play off and another in the DC) ? That's some nemesis. I like Delpo and think he would have been a consistent top 5 player without his injuries but to call him a nemesis for Djokovic with that record seems a bit of a push.

And one of those wins came I believe in Shanghai in 2011 when Djokovic tore a muscle in his back during the match and had to be helped off the court.
By the way he didn't yell at the ballboy, it was a case of collateral damage, please JM stop trying to rewrite history.

I say Djokovic has at best a 10--20 percent shot of overhauling Federer. He could however tie Federer or Sampras with 5 and 6 year end number 1s respectively. The one thing that cuts in his favor is that he has won every big tournament this year and really hasn't played all that great. I mean he is winning slams and masters while playing his B game. I think he has the ability to go on run like 2011, whether he will do it or not remains to be seen.

2012 AO quarter, Djokovic's antics were a disgrace, should have been banned for 2 months for ungentelmanly conduct. But Eastern Europeans don't know much about grace in victory. They only know triumphalism.

Maybe you could mention green goblin that djoko also called Stan after the match to pick him up and tell him how great he played which wawrinka said was very nice and helped. I won't defend the shirt ripping in fact criticized him for it on this site. But who really cares most of your posts are just mean spirited nonsense and quite boring.

Jahu no one cares about your bedroom activities. This is a tennis thread there are plenty of sites for you to go onto and talk about your dong or sexual conquests. I have not met anyone over the age 17 who talks more about sex then you. I am starting to think you are a pubescent boy who spends his time stickying up his keyboard.
