Day 13. Women's final. No funny title for you

Seems a shame to have nothing for this. Final just about to start. Murray lost his doubles final. On the flip side this means that mahut has finally picked up some major silverware

It wasn't a bad final, pretty enjoyable. Then really nice to see the two of them chatting away before the ceremony and the bombshell about retiring. A good evening's viewing!

I have just watched the after match interviews, two Italians in the final - they first played each other competitively when they were nine years old, both now in their thirties, the winner had already decided to retire at the end of the season, one beats the world number one preventing her from creating history in her home country never having taken a set off her & having lost the first set, having a draw that opened up for her including a walk-over but then facing the worlds number one in the semi-final, who is about twice her size and solid muscle, the other having a more difficult path ... certainly has the hallmarks of an Italian film.

i caught about half the women's final. it was ok some boring wta moments like long backhand to backhand rallies and followinng a moonball to the net. they both played to about their level I thought, neither really cracked.

penetta was able to end some of the side to side rallies with a good execution of a DTL backhand several times, a shot that may have made a difference in the match

curiously there are a lot of sudden or early retirments in the women's game but less in the men's game - at least in recent history.
