Five Best and worse referees in boxing history.....

1. Mills Lane.............Curry-Mccrory apart always felt this guy tended to be spot on......Apart from Camacho always seemed fair too..

2. Carlos Padilla........Probably the luckiest referee in history with the assigned bouts but overall pretty competent..

3. Steve Smoger.......Always seemed to be someone you could rely on......

4. Kenny Bayless......Bit biased towards Floyd...But you hardly nitice he's there....How a good referee should be..

5. Ruby goldstein......Made a boo boo with Benny Paret....But hugely respected and involved in some of the biggest fights around.

Other good ones... Randy Neumann, Frank Cappuchino, Davey Pearl..

Worst

1. Jersey Joe walcott.....Refereed one fight I think and that was enough to last a life time..

2. Ernesto Magana........No hispanic fighter could ever do anything wrong....and basically ruined Davey Moore's career..

3. Joey Curtis...............Awful..Either he stopped a fight too early or waited for someone to be nearly killed.....

4. Richard Steele..........Don't buy him and never will....

5. Joe Cortez................You'd never guess he was hispanic...

The best, for me, was the late Mitch Halpern. Peerless.

Thought his stoppage in Holyfield Tyson was spot on......Tyson's camp were out of order publicly abusing him before the rematch..

When reading the name Richard Steele, immediately think of the Tyson Spinks fight "knock it off Mike, knock it off", and commentator stating "Richard Steele already warning Mike about the elbow".
Agree with Mills Lane as a quality referee. The boxing equivalent of Collina.

Halpern reffed Gabe Ruelas vs. Jimmy Garcia (after which Garcia died). Richard Greene (the ref who did Ray Mancini and Duk Koo Kim) also took his own life.

Loved Cappuccino. What about Mercante Sr.?

I thought Steele was a good ref. to be honest.

Great list Truss can't argue against that - who was the ref who officiated the Andre Ward v Edwin Rodriguez fight ? seen him a few times and I like he's approach.

I think Bayless is overrated. Always looks panicky and out of control. Also allows repeat offending and can't control guys who love holding (maybe why Floyd favours him).

Bayless should of been allowed to wear his TMT hat into the ring in Floyd Fights.

Mickey Vann is great with his stories too. I think the podcast the lads did with him was my favourite. He was very insightful and quite the raconteur.
