Tassie 2016
Just about to head north for my favourite comp of the golfing year. Got practice rounds arranged at Dundonald Friday, Buddon Links Saturday then Carnoustie Championship course Sunday. The event has been put back a week this year so hoping the glorious weather of the last 2 years events holds out this year too.
Wasn't overly pleased that last year they changed the 2nd Course from the Burnside to the Buddon. The Burnside is just one of those courses that suits me, not quite sure why but I usually performed well on it. The Buddon however is a bit different and will take time to get to know. It's already been stated that the Buddon will be used as the 2nd course for the next 3 years. The main change they've made this year is that from the Last 16 onwards, the handicap matchplay moves to the Championship Course. That's a nice change because it used be the case that those going deep in the handicap matchplay missed out on playing the Championship course more than once.
So what's my chances and expectations this year? Well I've struggled off the tee for most of the summer, short game is better than its ever been and has kept me roughly where I started the year. If the long game doesn't improve I'll be in the consolation stable fords by the Wednesday. If the long game straightens itself out (there are some signs its getting better) then I would hope to qualify for the handicap KO, if I'm honest qualifying for the scratch KO is unlikely this year but we shall see.

The weather's been amazingly dry for at least a month with quite high winds so the courses are likely to be dry and fast (at least our's is) and it still looks set fair for next week so you should be in luck. See you Friday week.

Re: Tassie 2016
As stated in ""tell us about your game today" just shot 80 & 90 gross off 6 in the 2 practice rounds. Can I improve to qualifying level? Based on today I would estimate scratch qualifying at 158 Hcp at 151.
So basically will I knock 12 off my
Gross or 8 off my net??

There is the old cliche - you have got your bad rounds out of the way.

That is exactly how I am seeing it INW ;-) ...However that is seeing it through 6 pints and 2 large Pinot Noirs :-/

Re: Tassie 2016
Well...half way there 84 net 78 on a tough day on the Championship course. Shooting handicap tomorrow or better would give me 158 net 146. Scratch K/O dodgy but should make Hcp k/o. So much for the wind being similar to yesterday. Most of yesterday's notes irrelevant as a 45 degree change in wind direction made it a completely different course.

Re: Tassie 2016
Couldn't believe my eyes this mornings by as CSS on the Championship course yesterday was 74 so a 0.1 :-(
That fired me up today, can't go away from Carnoustie with a 0.2 increase!!
So a nice we 74 net 68 on the Buddon today will will hopefully be a 0.2 cut. In terms of the comp I have a 158 gross, 146 net total. Will probably miss out on the scratch k/o by 1 or 2 shots but should comfortably make the Hcp k/o

Re: Tassie 2016
Cheers Sup, crazy day yesterday, hit a driver 8 iron down Hogans. 17th was a 4iron 6 iron, yet the CSS at 74 would suggest it was flat calm...it really wasn't. That's probably the biggest deviation in actual CSS to expected CSS I've ever experienced.

Re: Tassie 2016
Well done JAS.
Me and a friend are thinking of trying to enter the Tassie next year. I'm off 11 so would have no expectation at all of making the gross cut. My mate's off 5 so might have a chance. Seems like a great week tho from what I've heard and a good chance to play Carnoustie a couple of times.
The website says there's quite a waiting list but you seem to get in each year. Do previous entrants get priority? Did you have to sit on a waiting list for a long time before first getting in?

Re: Tassie 2016
I remember trying to get in one year MPB, I sat with 3 windows of IE open, refreshing the page at every opportunity. My name was down within 30 seconds of it opening and I ended up around 47th reserve or something like that.

Re: Tassie 2016
Hi MPB, no it's a fresh application every Janiary, the previous 5 years winners get in. There are also 5 spaces reserved for the various Carnoustie GCs champions. The other 300-320 spaces go in about 5 minutes at 7.00pm on 11th Jan (or thereabouts). The waiting list is constructed then of those who just missed (I.e.have slow internet connectivity). It is a great event and well worth doing for £215. I've done it the past 7 years and only once have I only had 2 rounds on the championship course, it's usually 3 or 4

Re: Tassie 2016
You can do it, it's not that bad the last couple of years.
So...1st Round...4up after 8, level after 13...jeez how to recompose yourself after losing a 4 hole lead. Duly don't d and sunk a Sliding 15 footer to win 2&1 and avoid giving a shot down the last

Re: Tassie 2016
Ouch, soundly gubbed 6&5 this morning, just never got going, he was on fire, 5 down through 7, won 6 & 5, giving him a stroke on 10, I've hold a bunker shot for birdie and a half, that was as good as it got. Bogeyed the next 3 for a poor loss. To be fair he was pretty unflappable and well equipped to go much further.

Re: Tassie 2016
Had another pop and the championship course this afternoon. 30 points decent enough with the obligatory (wtf was JvDV thinking) par on 18. Nice end to the week, off to Leven tomorrow for a round with Ladyputt & Lordputt

Indeed, looking forward to next year already, wouldn't want to miss this week for the world, just love the tournament and what it's all about.
Another tinge of disappointment from this year...Tuesday CSS on the Buddon was 68, SSS is 69. 1st time for n 7 years I can remember the CSS coming down 1....seconds going home 0.1 higher

Re: Tassie 2016
It's always a bit easier to take when the other guy plays better, it's when you give it away when it really hurts. Sounds like the other guy was just having a blinder, and you can't do much about that.
Might try to get an entry for next year.
