Fighter of the Year 2016
Slim pickings this year - I'm thinking:
• Carl Frampton
• Terrence Crawford
• Roman Gonzalez
• Andre Ward
• Sergey Kovalev
Frampton for me - but I bet Ward gets it.
- 2008: Manny Pacquiao (Boxing Writers Association of America, Ring Magazine, BoxingScene.com)
- 2009: Manny Pacquiao (BWAA, Ring, BoxingScene)
- 2010: Sergio Martinez (BWAA, Ring, BoxingScene)
- 2011: Andre Ward (BWAA, Ring, BoxingScene)
- 2012: Nonito Donaire (BWAA, BoxingScene), Juan Manuel Marquez (Ring)
- 2013: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (BWAA), Adonis Stevenson (Ring, BoxingScene)
- 2014: Terence Crawford (BWAA), Sergey Kovalev (Ring), Naoya Inoue (BoxingScene)
- 2015: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (BWAA, BoxingScene), Tyson Fury (Ring)

Lomachenko maybe in with a shout too? Went up to win his second world title at a higher weight in only his seventh fight and then defended his title and took away his opponent's 0. Frampton probably still favourite but Loma in with a shout I think.

I don't think Frampton will win it. Lomachenko is a decent shout.
If Ward had of won with no controversy he would have a good chance.
To be honest Gonzalez might get it. Not his best year, but another year undefeated and is seen by many as the best p4p.

Carl Frampton is a very good shout. OK his long awaited fight with Quigg wasn't the spectacle we had all hoped but he got the job done. And then to move up to Featherweight and go to the US and take that title off LSC, very very impressive

Ward only had one good win this year though
Frampton has to be
Beat Quigg then moved up and beat Santa Cruz, both undefeated

Will it be enough for Frampton??
I hope it is. He is my favourite fighter and not just because he is from the same country. I think he is a classy fighter and usually in exciting fights.

It should be, I can't think of anyone else who has those kind of wins
I mean not fighting Rigondeaux isn't going to help, but I think they will look past that

Frampton surely. Taking 0's and belts off two champions in two weight divisions - fantastic achievement!

Yeah going on the road to do it as well!
He fought in Quigg's back yard, which I totally forgot

To put it into some context though, neither Quigg or Santa Cruz were the best at their weights, both solid fighters but not exactly Rigondeaux, Lomachenko or Russell Jnr.

How was Quigg not at his best weight
He means Quigg and Santa Cruz were not the real best fighters in each division. Frampton didn't take the toughest challenge.

While neither were rated the best in their respective divisions, Frampton's win over LSC has made him the number one ranked featherweight in the world with TBRB (Lomachenko had already moved, and while Russell is rated first with Ring, LSC is surely the better fighter of the two).
Two excellent results against one of the top two fighters in the two divisions he's campaigned in this year (and two of his main rivals who were slap bang in their primes).

Frampton all the way. Both wins on the road as well. One as a reasonable underdog.

Gary Russell Jnr is a better boxer than LSC.

If LSC and Gary Russell Jr fought, you wouldn't pick Gary Russell Jr?

Overpaid by Haymon - doesn't need to fight often.

There's a clear gap between the two, not wanting to deride Framptons victory too much but LSC has an engine but very little else.

A clear gap? Russell has had one major fight and Loma beat the cra p out of him. LSC far more seasoned and well rounded. He'd take Russell. Oscar Valdez probably would, too (as would Frampton).
Russell fought soft opposition on way up and barely fights.

Weird how you managed to follow the thread!
Another losing argument there. LSC has much the better record and is the better fighter of the two as a result.

Not at featherweight though....
I mean LSC best win is Mares, Mares got startched in one round against Gonzalez and Russell Jr played with Gonzalez...

Neither have done a lot at 126 to be fair but the suggestion was Russell was the better boxer - which is different from arguing he has better wins at 126. Styles make fights: Mares was cold-cocked and hasn't been the same since. Gonzalez struggles with speed.

Frampton is getting better every fight. He won't beat Lomachenko types, but Frampton is top class.
Love watching the wee man fight. His footwork, his angles. Boxing on the backfoot, or standing to trade. He can do it all.

Too much stock is placed on a boxers record; from what I've seen of them Russell Jr is the better pure boxer, his handspeed is ridiculous and it's testament Lomachenko's ability that he won comfortably.

He's the only guy around at the minute I'm a huge fan of. I don't think he'll get a decision in Jan, though. Can smell it.

What a ridiculous statement. Yeah, don't worry about a guy's record - as long as they have flashy jazz hands!
(Good thing is he can't see these responses - so won't have his usual s*** fit).

I predicted the same earlier. If the fight is anyway close, I think Santa Cruz will take it.
Rubber match next year if that's the case. Though you get the feeling, Frampton will just have to hit and move more. Don't trade with the guy. LSC will happily take a few, to land a few more.
Anyway, I can't wait to see this fight!

I just think LSC will be more at home in Vegas than in NY (not in terms of climate or anything - just that he's fought there so many times previously).
I'm in Belfast that weekend for my birthday but don't think it's on anywhere (no casinos over there).

there are bound to be some bars or hotels showing the fight late in Belfast. Belfast is a good city for a drink. I worked there for a couple years, miss the place!

Apparently they all close at 3 am. Mind you, by that time I'll be asleep in a bus shelter.

Last time I was there, I went looking for a bus home at 3am. Found my way to the station blocked! You would think. I would of known that buses and trains are not 24 hours!

There's a bar in Belfast that's usually pretty good at showing late shows. They get a late license for a lot of the PPV stuff. I'd imagine they will be showing the fight that night. I'm hoping to go to the fight but I'll check with them and see if they will be showing it.
