Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
First topic message reminder :
Insert funny image here, probably of a genuine Glaswegian; none of your See-an Canary nonsense here.
Insert an image summing up the pretentiousness of Luvviedom. Grant Gilchrist in a kilt eating shortbread?
Add some statistics; time elapsed, in decades, since Ickle Jonny missed a tackle. Time elapsed, in eons, since someone stayed awake for the whole 80 minutes at the Library.
Make some witty banterish comment to start the ball rolling.
See! How hard was that?
I'll Put A Funny Sub-Title Here

From watching all the previous Living with Lions DVDs it seems to be common practice to only have the Test 23 in the jersey presentation ceremony so that isn't a Gatland thing. It does somewhat go against the 'whole squad is important' ethos though!

aye it just adds fuel to the fire that either the lions coach should be a "neutral" or the Lions could become a thing of the past!

I went to collect MrsPip from her work this afternoon. She wasn't quite ready so she left me alone in her office with a computer turned on...
Magically the BBC iplayer began showing the Cheetahs-Ospreys live.
All those empty seats.
It reminded me of watching the Luvvies in the Library....except there was quite a good game of rugby going on.

Ya wee rogue Jimbo. Even I am beginning to feel sorry for the Luvvies -seen off by another shocking refereeing performance in Dublin. Hmmmmm..... where have I heard that before

So Glasgow have the best defense in the NH after 5 rounds. Not a bad way to start the season.
Looking ahead, the Cheetahs game is probably going to ruin that...

Thought James Johnson was superb for Edinburgh and Fife is probably our form winger - I'm sure Cockerill will be trying to keep them but will he be successful?
Johnson terrified the Leinster defence whenever he got the ball - his pace and stepping was incredible. He offers something we don't really have at 13 for Edinburgh - someone with lightening acceleration and the ability to break the first line of defense with his footwork.
Problem is they're both key 7s players so Scott Johnson will need to decide what is more important!

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
Morning amigos...
Three things;
The Luvvies can feel hard done by: the refs do love a bit of Ladyboy action, don't they?
Although the Cheetahs are second in the conference they have actually conceded slightly more points than they have scored. I can see Glasgow scoring a few next week, the only question is how many will we concede.
Mrs Pip was watching a property programme focussing on the west of Scotland. She was commenting on; views, room sizes, gardens etc. I was thinking "train links to Scotstoun?" Is this normal?

Yes Sir ! These thoughts are entirely normal after another sell out capacity last night. We just need some mega rich dude to fund Finn's new contract and the world will be well

Asking "for a friend" who doesn't understand these things.
In almost every attack today Execeterr had a big lump running in front of first receiver, the ball was passed behind him to the intended first receiver. Tigers resorted to putting two defenders Siamese twins close, but that tended to leave them short out wide.
The question is, how is that not deliberate obstruction?

To be fair most sides have players running blocking lines, the trick is for them to be far enough ahead and not to make any contact with a defender.
More clever defences, often make sure there is contact and also that the ref knows that there has been. CDP got caught out like this for Edinburgh, when Fife's try was disallowed. The defender he was supposed to have taken out was no-where near enough to make the tackle but made it very clear to the ref that he had been taken out and it was swallowed.
Exeter are a smart side like that as well and the Glasgow coaches will have to plan their tactics accordingly.

Yes, Gee, I understand and agree with everything you say here, but Execeterr were doing it in the attacking third with the decoy flat on the 9 and within 2_3 yards of the ruck and the was no more than two yards behind. As I see it, it is impossible to get past him in time to make a "man and Ball" challenge.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
Jim - the relevant rule is 10.1:
10.1 Obstruction
(a) Charging or pushing. When a player and an opponent are running for the ball, either player must not charge or push the other except shoulder-to-shoulder.
Sanction: Penalty kick
(b) Running in front of a ball carrier. A player must not intentionally move or stand in front of a team-mate carrying the ball thereby preventing opponents from tackling the current ball carrier or the opportunity to tackle potential ball carriers when they gain possession.
Sanction: Penalty kick
(c) Blocking the tackler. A player must not intentionally move or stand in a position that prevents an opponent from tackling a ball carrier.
Sanction: Penalty kick
(d) Blocking the ball. A player must not intentionally move or stand in a position that prevents an opponent from playing the ball.
Sanction: Penalty kick
(e) Ball carrier running into team-mate. A player carrying the ball must not intentionally run into team-mates in front of that player.

Re: Glasgow and The Disapproving Neighbours 18 At Last! Whose Round is it?
Thanks George.
So, if I'm reading that correctly... it's all about impeding a ball carrier and since we're talking about passes placed deliberately behind a player who runs towards , but not into, the first defender then he's not preventing him from tackling the ball carrier since the ball is in mid-air and not actually being carried.
It all sounds very Jarndyce V Jarndyce to my unlearned ears. I know teams and coaches will use the Richie Mcaw defence, "It's only illegal if the ref blow up", but if I'm defending at the side of a ruck and the first attacker runs close to the ruck and flat to the 9 he is filling my line of sight. If the actual receiver is running almost directly behind him and in his slipstream then I have been taken out of the game. I think, as m'learned friends would say the law is an ass.
Anyhoo, I'm just off to the Scott Baldwin Wildlife (but not too) Petting Zoo to stroke a ferret...while it's being eaten by a polar bear.

OK, my schizoid amigo, I realise I missed the word "receiver " out but surely the isn't about "man and ball challenge"? Because the point I was trying to make is that the defensive line like to hit the attackers just as they receive the ball. Good defensive leaders tend to be 12's like G-Dog or Eck Dunbar whose line speed sets the tempo for the players outside them. I think it's impossible to do that effectively if you're having to run round a decoy runner who is running a channel which almost but not quite body checks you.
Anyhoo, you're getting quite pedantic: have the pubs shut early tonight?

Could Byron McGuigan be a dark horse for a Scotland call-up? Seems to be on fire at the moment.
And holy cow. Zebre beating Ulster and playing well while doing so! The Italians seem to be on the up. About time.

He (McGuigan) scored a few tries for us but defensively he was all over the place and I think fell out with GT. If that is is the case doubt if he will pull on the dark blue again.

My memory of the time is that he was a little bit "show bizzie"(girlfriend is a theatrical, though not a Luvvie, and was appearing in London's west end) and seemed to believe he was the best back at Scotstoun. Not an attitude to endear him to the Toonmeister. So the parting was not entirely amicable.

And when you have a beard and a haircut as silly as his, you need all of the goodwill that you can find.
The only thing that I miss about him is the fun of calling him 'Barry'.
