SURREY VS GLOUCESTERSHIRE/ESSEX ROYAL LONDON CUP
Jason Roy has returned to the Surrey squad for Wednesday’s visit of Gloucestershire in the Royal London One-Day Cup.
Full squad is as follows
Rory Burns (captain)
Gareth Batty
Scott Borthwick
Rikki Clarke
Sam Curran
Jade Dernbach
Dean Elgar
Ben Foakes
Will Jacks
Stuart Meaker
Ryan Patel
Ollie Pope
Jason Roy
Freddie van den Bergh
Patel for Meaker and Roy for Jacks for me
Saying that pope needs a score or his head will be next on the chopping block.
Over to you chaps

Re: SURREY VS GLOUCESTERSHIRE/ESSEX ROYAL LONDON CUP
Cheers, JimBob.
Your eleven seems the most likely. That gives you Patel plus possibly a bit of Borthwick as the 5th bowler. Although not brilliant, almost certainly better than sticking with Meaker atm.
Another option would be to play Jacks instead of Patel and go with his off spin.

Not too confident in Jacks and Borthwick making up the fifth bowler.
Hoping for a Roy special today

Looks a bowler light, but the batting looks really strong - surprised they bowled Borthwick for 8 overs, probably should have just taken his 5/6 good ones and not pushed for an extra one

Real shame that Borthwick dosen't bowl much anymore, really was a useful leggie and his test figures are decent

Afternoon all. Cracking couple of sixes from Jacks off the bowling of Smith.

Elgar bowled having a wild swish for 50. But a cracking partnership with Jacks.
Earlier Jacks brought up his first century for Surrey first team with his third six off Smith.
158 - 2.

Is the bar open yet, Corporal? I opened it the other week in your absence..after our demolition of Yorkshire. Hope that was ok! Invoice will be in the post. Whatever else happens and without hyping up too much, there is some tremendous young talent in the team which is mighty encouraging all the more so as it I should coming up through the ranks rather than expensive imports.

Chichester - bar is open, but with limited range presently (owing to the as yet unexplained decision to clear out the entire stock while I was on manouvres up north).

Remarkably clean, powerful hitting by Jacks today. Clear that Surrey management had a lot of confidence in his ability when they played him in the 50 over competition despite his poor form in pre season matches. I don't suppose it would happen very often but it will be remarkable if Roy and Jacks both hit a purple patch of form at the same time.

Re: SURREY VS GLOUCESTERSHIRE/ESSEX ROYAL LONDON CUP
I was fortunate enough to see yesterday's game at the Oval and feel the comments above are spot on.
We let them get 30 or 40 more than we should have, particularly considering we had them 131/5 in the 29th. Our fielding was sloppy at times and Borthwick had at least one over too many. The Badger had put in a surprisingly handy stint but we should have banked that earlier.
Whilst that may have caused problems on another day, it didn't matter a jot in the end largely due to a match winning innings from Jacks. Although he will face tougher attacks, he was very impressive with a highly confident and fluent century.

And the same team as probably expected by most.
Essex in low 70s after 15 but have only lost 1 wicket. Chopra, a steady opener, still there and will, I guess, look to bat long with those around him - Westley now - going for the runs. Our 5th bowler hasn't appeared yet - that will almost certainly be a Jacks & Badger combo and I fully expect Essex to target them.

Essex 155/3 after 30.
320 looking on. Going to be hard for Surrey.

210 for 4 with 10 overs left need to keep them under 300 somehow

Decent work from Surrey at the end as Essex close on 294/9.

Yeah, but not a piece of cake for Surrey. Essex's best chance is to take 10 wickets. To prevent that, we'll have to bat smart and get the balance right between pushing on sensibly and not losing wickets.
Going back to our bowling, I feel Burns did the right thing in giving Borthwick just 5 overs even though he took a couple of wickets. Important to know when to stick and not push your luck.

Dernbach's form starting to be a bit of a worry. After some amazing performances the last couple of years, he hasn't started the One Day competition well at all.

Good point, James.
Surprisingly, Dernbach's bowling has seemed better in the Championship.

I did suspect he would find it harder going today but was reckoning on the likes of Wagner and/or Harmer causing him the most problems rather than the lesser known Cook.

100 up in the 16th. Roy taking the lead but Elgar also playing his part.
Elgar doesn't have the natural strokeplay of some of our recent best batsmen but he's a canny and gritty player. Much respected within the Club from what I hear. I wouldn't be surprised if we are trying to move heaven and earth to get him to extend his contract following Kohli's no show,

Excellent batting performance with three solid 80s to back up a good recovery by the bowlers. Wagner certainly took some stick, going for 83 off his 10 overs.
The bar is now open.

We'll need to keep winning in this competition as we've got the worst NRR of any team in either of the Divisions - including Glam who've lost all four of their matches.
