BIG and BMC Watford Empty BIG and BMC Watford

Post by armchairfan1 Sat 11 Jun 2011, 1:18 am

As there are two big Domestic meets the weekend I thought I would create a seperate thread!!

Bedford International Games: Sunday 12th

Highlights include:

Mens Sprints:
Young sensation David Bolarinwa runs over both 100 and 200 and will face stiff competion from the likes of James Ellington. In the High Hurdles a domestic battle takes place between Gianni Frankis, Alexander Al-ameen and the returning Chris Baillie. Neil Flannery heads the 400m Hurdles enteries looking to break 50 secs.

Mens Field:
Robbie Grabarz and Tom Parsons will face off in the High Jump with both pushing to achieve the A Standard outdoors. In the throws the Discus is the event to watch with up and coming talent Lawrence Okoye will look to get back on track after a few below par peformances. While Mervyn Luckwell looks to dominate in the mens javelin and achieve a World championship qualifier.

Womens Sprints:
A packed field in the Womens 100 and 200 is headline by World Junior 100m Champion Jodie Williams. She faces competition over both distances from the likes of Asha Phillip, Ashleigh Nelson and British 100m Record Holder Montell Douglas. Also in the 200m field is 400mh Perri Shakes-Drayton who will be looking to do some speed work and break her PB. In the 100M hurdles Gemma Bennett faces off against Commenwealth Heptathlon Champion Louise Hazel who also competes in the Long Jump and Javelin. In the 400mh Meghan Beesley will be pressing for the A standard for the Daegu.

Womens Field:
The highlights include a competitive long jump where several competitors over 6m already. In the Javelin British no 2 Laura Whittingham will look to throw over 60m for the first time this year but will face competition from Under 17 Record holder Freya Jones. In the Hammer Sarah Holt heads the field looking to push toward a World B standard.

Charlene has just proven the decision to run her in Stockholm as an excellent selection, so happy to see her get back after the bad luck in Berlin. As for Shara, this has been coming for a while, 7m jump in her by the time the olympics comes around i think.
Great performance by Lynsey sharp, beating Okoro and Jackson! our womens middle distances are starting to show real good depth.

Also Nadia Williams jumped 13.77m, unofficial wind was 1.7m/s. New PB if confirmed! She was followed home by Yasmine Regis and Laure Samuel who jumped 13.34 & 13.29 with legal winds in wet conditions.

Some very good results from France, have not got much time so i will just highlight British results.

Lee McConnell won the womens 400m beating out Muriel Hurtis and Antonina Krivoshapka in 51.56 SB to the times of 51.62 SB and 51.98.

In the sprints Dwain Chambers came home 3rd in 10.04, behind winner Daniel bailey (9.97) and Yohan blake (9.98). Laura Turner wound up fourth in the womens 100m in a 11.43 SB behind the strong Ukrainian sweep lead by Mariya Ryemyen (11.21 PB) followed home by Olesya Povh (11.24 PB) and Nataliya Pohrebnyak (11.31). Both races recorded 0.4m/s winds.

To be fair the pacemakers had to run 23s to get in front of the field! Would have been much better to run 1.18 for 600m with 3 26's rather than 23, 27, 28 but the brazillian prevented that from happening!

Also delighted to see Charlene Thomas back to form after a career threatening injury at the end of 2009 and nightmare 2010.

Great to see we're up to 19 guys under 14 mins already - there were only 18 for the whole of last season. Perhaps we're seeing the tide turning when it comes to strength in depth over middle and long distances. Further to Moumin Geele's status, I wonder what is to become of Mehretab Solomon? Solomon is a Eritrean-born but London-based athlete who finished 2nd behind Mo Farah at the Bupa 10K in late May. In doing so he finished ahead of such stars as Lemoncello, Wicks and Tickner. I wouldn't like to speculate too much, or indeed take 10,000m team spot away from Gerrard, Vernon or Beattie, but Solomon is now coached here and has been racing here since the end of the 2008 season. So, superficially, he seems to be going through a process of naturalisation. At the moment his PBs over shorter distances are pretty ordinary but it would be interesting to see what would happen if he mixed it with our other top domestic athletes over 10,000m.
