Alexander Povetkin, getting battered, landed the punch perhaps of his career to destroy Dillian Whyte and claim WBC mandatory bout against Tyson Fury. Through four rounds it was all Whyte, whom floored the veteran Russian twice in the fourth round. Hearn suggests there will be a rematch.

Katie Taylor beat Delfine Persoon in their rematch. Once again close fight.

Povetkin looked a bit shot, heavy legged, plodding coming into the fifth round.  But still had body reflexes and a good chin to withstand two knockdowns, and still had high ring IQ, grit, experience, to identify the weakness - he had seen Whyte's exposure to that shot earlier when he ducked down and looked at the spot.  Then a few moments later Whyte came forward, Povetkin ducked then brought up a left hooked upper cut, which connected flush to Whyte's jaw.   Whyte never saw it and was sparked out.

Povetkin's hail-mary punch reminded me of Harrison's against Sprott, which also got Harrison a world title shot.

Sorry to ask but do WBC make up their rules on a whim? They clarified over night that despite Povetkin winning and becoming mandatory for Fury, that mandatory can’t be cashed in. But if Whyte would’ve won he would got a guaranteed shot.

This some sort of weird nonsense?

Not really, one was mandatory for over 1000 days so had a strong legal position for a shot, the other has only just become mandatory and I assume a rematch clause was in place were Povetkin to win.

I haven't been following boxing lately, but I would yes, the WBC do seem to make up their rules as they go along.

Some fighters make it to be number one contenders and still never get a title shot, while some champions have to make mandatory defences and some champions don't.
