I see Mr Trump, that well known Scot, wants Shir Sean and Soapy Salmond to open his building site/wee golf course.

If you built a golf course who would you choose to open it?

Good question!

Do dead people count? If so, then it has to be Joyce Wethered. She must have been a pretty exceptional golfer to have won the admiration of Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen.

Trump? Used to be a euphemism for 'fart' when I was at school.....

Nelson Mandela for me along with Jack Nicklaus.

Gael
Have you read Joyce Wethered's book, some story.
Roger Wethered was a great player in his own right and Joyce would occasionally beat him level.
I went round her house and gardens in Devon[?] beautiful place but very little mention of her golf career. She really got stuck into gardening when she stopped playing.

My first set of irons as a boy were Joyce Wethered's.
Good choice, might be a bit smelly though.

Having a celebrity open a course, would not make me more interested in playing it. I'd be much more interested in the designer and/or architect. Plus who else would be members. Groucho Marx - "I would not be interested in joining a club that would accept me as a member" - I think.

You've had a few open in your time haven't you Doon? Who did you get to open them?

Ian Woosnam when he was World No 1, spent half a day with him and a couple of beers after. Good guy.

A Cabinet Minister, totally bored out of his skull for being there but did a good speech.

The local Mayor, pretentious poseur, but we also did a County Pro's vs Amateurs exhibition match.
The match was great as the Amateurs included three current England internationals and the Pros were all club pros.
The pros won the match much to everyones surprise.

If I had the money I would invite someone like Chris Evans as a new course needs to make itself aware to non golfers. You would also get greater publicity with a celebrity than a golfer.

No one, it seems, is more polarizing than Donald Trump. Who doesn't find him cocky, arrogant and grating? I find his course designs to be overblown, full of many artificial and silly looking elements.

But, I suspect I'm not in the majority.

I can tell you first hand that he's done a fatastic job with Trump National in the Philly area and has certainly put his money where his mouth is. Join one of his clubs and have access to all -- I think he's cracked a code.

Is he good or bad for "golf" ... Who knows ... but I kind of enjoy how he continues to shake up the old guard.

His script writers played a blinder as in his interview he thanked the small handful of protesters for giving his course worldwide publicity.

Knowing how big headed and self important Trump is, the only person who might have a chance of upstaging him, in opening his golf course would be Lady Ga Ga Ok!

If I "built a golf course" I'd select me to open it. My fee is relatively low, I know how to ply guests with drinks, and after watching me play all those in attendance would know damn well they would play it better than the moron who they got to open it.

But if I knew Trump would be there, I'd pay whatever it took to get Seth Meyers to open it.

Doon the Water, d'you mean this book ...

"First of all, I think it is necessary on the question of technique to say that I am not talking about "ladies golf", because, strictly speaking, there is no such thing as ladies' golf at all - only good or bad golf as played by members of either sex. If it does not sound too paradoxical, I have always played men's golf - that is, according to the principles that have been thought out and applied by men in the past as supplying the only real models - and the golf I have learnt and played has been entirely based on these lines. If a lady has not the physique to carry out these principles, it is only a parallel to a long-handicap man who is not able to apply the best methods of play either. The leading golfers of both sexes have always in their different degrees of strength built up their games on the same foundations even if the outward appearances may be individual."

There were some real gems in that book.
Should be compulsory reading for all 14 year old boy golfers.

I'd get Donald Trump to open my golf course - shove him into a pot bunker and see if his syrup flies off...

Doon ... quiz question for you. If you go to the sequence of photos just after page 104 and look at picture no. 4 (top of the swing) which current male american professional does that swing position remind you of?

I've been on site at Trump's course and he's going to have to tie his syrup under the chin if he wants to keep hold of it. That is going to be one savage place to play golf.
