Great American landscapes and gritty British life
Hello all.
I'm just after some film recommendations really, with the criteria mentioned in the title. Which good films should I watch if I want to see sweeping views of the great American outdoors? Any genre is fine. Westerns, road movies, anything with really inspiring US scenery...
Also, I'd quite like to show some of my Chinese friends that not all British people are polite and wear monocles. Can you recommend some good British films that show the dirtier side of life? Something like Harry Brown perhaps.
Cheers.

British grit has to be Trainspotting, although you'll have to put subtitles on!

American landscapes - Winter's Bone, True Grit, Fargo
British grit (btw these are nothing like Harry Brown, but are still the complete opposite to monocle-wearing toffs. All from the '50s and '60s and depict working class life in the north of England) - This Sporting Life, Kes, Saturday Night Sunday Morning, Billy Liar

UK Gritty film: "A Way of Life" - Dir. Amma Asante - A horrifying portrayal of racism in Swansea.
"Neds" - Not seen this due to the Glasgow cineworld being sold out when I tried to.
"Red Road" - Odd film about surveillance but the plot unravels itself well.
Obvious suggestions include any film directed by Shane Meadows and if you want a fantasy representation then go for Trainspotting or a Kidulthood/Adulthood.
A great western film is what will give you good long shots of scenery. I really think that films that directed and shot with appreciation for scenery and atmosphere really set themselves above the rest. It's something that has been lost from mainstream cinema since the 1980's.

US Scenery - Take yer pick (though I recommend The Right Stuff. Great desert life scenery at Edwards AFB.)
UK Grit - Trainspotting although it pales compared to the "angry young man" stuff from the '60s.
