Varying reports coming out about Smiths fitness, Coughlin doubts he'll play half the season which is why he allowed Smith to go, and the contract is apparently loaded with appearance/performance incentives that no-one is expecting him to get close to.....

I think its his injury history putting teams off, can't be his ability. Dont know what to think of Mays, possibly one of the greatest athletes in all of the nfl but he can only shadow receivers in a straight line and i suppose with little coverage skills in a passing league, the writing was on the wall, was a typical singletary pick, huge physical presence, a lb in a safetys world.

To echo what niner has said Taylor Mays is an absolute beast physically but he's not a football player. His biggest problem is that he can't change direction. Given that the only thing the 49ers have done this offseason is sign safeties it must have been an easy decision to let him go.

Also the Colts may as well cut Painter and Orlovsky. This is such a clear indication that the organisation has no faith in them.

They can't go into the season with their no' 1 guy recovering from surgery, a veteran who's been pulled from retirement and an undrafted FA, they have to retain Painter or Orlovsy or both.

This is the problem when you allow your main guy to call the plays, when he isn't there no-one else can run the offence the same way (not that it's been an issue for 270 odd games !)

Reggie Wayne seems less than impressed they signed KC....
