BBC and Sky to share F1 Coverage
from BBC
"The BBC and Sky Sports will broadcast Formula 1 in the UK between 2012 and 2018 under a new rights deal.
The BBC has been the exclusive broadcaster of F1 in the UK since 2009 but its contract with Formula One Management was due to expire after the 2013 season.
Sky Sports will show every race, qualifying session and practice live.
BBC Sport will broadcast half the races live, as well as the qualifying and practice sessions from those races.
Both companies will broadcast in high definition.
The BBC will have highlights on TV and mobile for any race it it is not showing live, and all races will be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 live.
Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said: "We are absolutely delighted that F1 will remain on the BBC.
"The sport has never been more popular with TV audiences at a 10-year high and the BBC has always stated its commitment to the big national sporting moments.
"With this new deal not only have we delivered significant savings but we have also ensured that through our live and extended highlights coverage all the action continues to be available to licence-fee payers."
Races shown live on BBC TV will include the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Monaco GP and the concluding race of the season.
Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: "This is fantastic news for F1 fans and Sky Sports will be the only place to follow every race live and in HD.
"We will give F1 the full Sky Sports treatment with a commitment to each race never seen before on UK television."
"
I hate this news, Free to Air TV just took a HUGE hit.....discuss

What pisses me off more than anything is this comment "Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said: "We are absolutely delighted that F1 will remain on the BBC."
Remaining means staying in its current form, not half the f**king races you bi**h. I hope Sky don't take Martin Brundle and Co. from us as well. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!!!!!
I hope Eddie Jordan will get stuck into this on the weekend but he will probably be told to keep quiet.

I think this is great news.
Better coverage for fans (Sky have improved every other sport they cover so why not F1?). HD pictures which are long overdue
And for those who don't like F1, less of their license fee being devoted to something they don't want
Win all round

Re: BBC and Sky to share F1 Coverage
just saw the tv explain that this will be helping to cut costs.
i'm sorry but...CUT THE STUPIDLY LONG BUILD UP TO SOME OF YOUR OTHER STUFF!
30 minutes is fine build up for football, not an hour!
F1 should be an hour build up! ok qualifying can be cut to 30-45 minutes but come on F1 is brilliant for the BBC!

Are you for real? The coverage is amazing right now. Get your facts straight, HD is already available. F1 has lost alot of fans because who spends 30-40 pounds a month for a load of bull bar the sports channels

Re: BBC and Sky to share F1 Coverage
I have sky, so in reality this won't be too bad for me, but for people who don't it's another pathetic money making move.
We don't get much sport free to air anymore, and it threatens marginalising sport to having fans who have access only. After this contract ends expect to see sky take the remaining races and the BBC flushing more licence fees down the toilet on rudey poo sitcoms, dramas and that McIntyre ponce.

I used to be a fan, but enough is enough let Sky have all of it I couldn't care less anymore. I might even stop paying my licence fee as I don't watch anything on the BBC.

The thing is the coverage on sky will be brilliant, look at the gap between cricket, football, golf etc coverage on BBC/ITV and sky. Proper HD, better camera angles.
Bring it on!

motor sport fans
now you know how cricket supporters felt a few years ago.
however you have still got a good deal with half the races live, and no doubt there will be extensive highlights of the other races.
I would love there to be half of all test matches live on terrestrial TV, so stop complaining.

Seriously? You're 50, can you not remeber the dark dark days of ITV F1 coverage?? "oh my god, schumacher looks like he's going to make a move to take th..." "Are you paying too much for your car insurance?" ...cut back..."wow wow wow, what a move...!"
Ad-breaks ruin F1, it just cannot work and there's no way Sky will sacrifice the income. It's a purely money driven organisation. BBC coverage is the best there's ever been. Personally I like Sky's cricket coverage, but you can afford a few breaks here and there in a 5 day test match. 90 mins of F1 coverage needs to be unbroken.
Sad times for all true F1 fans indeed.......

Do you KNOW for a fact what Sky's advert policy will be during the races?
No, neither do I. I do however suspect they will treat it more professionally that ITV ever did.

I also have access to Sky but it is rather annoying. I think Sky can maybe afford a longer build up to the race with as breaks before stopping them for the race and maybe do an American style thing of pop up ads during the race. Tho it will have to play second fiddle to football of course.

Re: BBC and Sky to share F1 Coverage
seriously sky sports taking this is gonna be disastrous for viewing figures in f1. The BBC were doing a terrific job and now let me guess sky just put a blonde bimbo possibly georgie thompson as lead presenter and they think the numbers will role in. seeing her present A1GP was disastrous and let me guess mark blundell and tony 'boring as hell' jardine will be all over this like a tramp on chips. shockin all round!

If they can snare one of Brundle or Coulthard to come over then they will be doing well.
I wonder if they will bring James Allen over? Or Crofty and Davidson?

All sports on Sky are interupted by adverts so whilst I haven't had a personal pow-wow with the Sky Sports executive board I'm thoroughly confident I'll be proved right. They even put adverts between rounds in boxing - EVEN WHEN IT'S ON PPV!! If Sky can justify charging £15 extra and still force adverts upon us I doubt they're going to let a little GP and overall customer/fan satisfaction get in the way.
As madworld points out, F1 on sky will always be second fiddle to football. Whereas, other than maybe Wimbledon, F1 on BBC is THE sporting showcase for the channel. This cannot be a good thing.

Sky have 5 dedicated 24 hour sports channels. F1 could be 4th fiddle to football and it would still have a channel all to itself

Sky, if they have any sense, will put it one of the two premium channels that they have to offer to BT and Virgin Customers hence giving more viewers a chance of viewing it. I am surprised Sky have got it but they have been taking a lot more interest recently.

Re: BBC and Sky to share F1 Coverage
if its PPV it will end up like the boxing, no subscribers. they will u turn or reduce the price massively. would suprise me to see this sky coverage being stopped after a year or two once they realise there mistake at not making f1 free to air. seriously when the race is on bbc for example silverstone, monaco and the last race of the season, sky is gonna have absolutely no viewers - doesnt make sense for sky. once the football season kicks in it will be competing against there super sunday programme of events and it will get trounced. shocking from sky, too big for their boots and will willl undoubtely be presenter by a blonde bimbo with no knowledge and jardine n blundell. appaling

Tbh, when Sky got the Masters i was furious but after viewing the coverage, I have to admit that it was excellent.
So it could be a good thing. But I can understand the unwillingness to pay money to see it. They wont make it PPV. Not if their doing full and extensive coverage

No they wont. Pop up ads during the race. They need to advertise their constant football coverage. As Hamilton makes an overtaking move we'll see Wayne Rooney's shrek like head appear in ad for Live football before it switches to Sir Alex chewing gum.

dean says July 29, 2011 10:43am
There will be adverts during the races, what the editor is saying is that the races will be live and uninterrupted, not once has the editor stated that adverts will not be shown. Therefore what will happen is when the adverts are on there will be a small box on the corner of your screen with the f1 on. Sad day for F1 and its fans.
Editor says
There will be NO adverts or pop ups during the races, Dean

Sky changing the habit of a lifetime? I'll believe when I see it. As I said with the boxing, if Sky can charge £15 for 36 minutes of action and still find a way to put adverts in then I'm sure once all the furore has calmed down and the PR machine is dealing with another mess we'll get nicely interrupted ITV-esque coverage.
And with respect to the 5 sky sports channels, it's SS1-3, plus 4 (which used to be SS'Extra' and is rubbish) and SS News, which isn't really sports channel, it's a news channel covering sports but never showing any live/full action (and is populated entirely by clueless but pretty dolly-birds).

Please sign this Petition to keep it on the BBC, if enough people sign it hopefully someone will see sense:
http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/keepf1onthebbc
It was only made an hour ago and already has 1,400 signatures, also anyone with Twitter could they possibly post it on Martin Brundle's account please?
One more request could members with accounts on other F1 Forums l post this link on their sites please.
My notes where apparently too long, as I was ranting away...can't even have a good rant at the BBC even when signiing a petition!

Not necessarily. Most races start at 1pm with Super Sunday often starting at 3pm-330pm. I know there are some Sunday's where SKY have 2 matches on, but these could easily be worked round the F1 races, especially considering a lot of the races which take place during the footbal season are outside Europe and therefore have early morning or late in the evening start times.

What will we tell our grandchildren? F1 was lost to Sky...and we just sat there moaning and groaning? Let's go to the studio and protest, we will take up anything that gets in our way, and then after that march down to Bernie and show him that fans are important, if it wasn't for them he wouldn't be as half as rich!
I have a dream!!!!!

Re: BBC and Sky to share F1 Coverage
People who are saying they are giving up their licence fee. You still need to pay for one even if you have sky.
This isn't good news for the fans, but it seems like the BBC are desperate to keep Wimbledon on the channel to please The Establishment for 2 weeks a year rather than keep F1. The BBC have gone cap in hand to sky over this and to be honest it was only a matter of time before this ultra profit driven sport was lost from free to air tv.
