Federer is finished
Stick a fork in him as the yanks would say..
When the going gets tough he just aint got it anymore.
No more fire in the belly.
Sad.... but true.

Re: Federer is finished
Sadly a pale shadow of a once great champion.
Has anyone else noticed how his FH (at his peak the most devastating weapon the game has ever seen) nolonger seems capable of hitting winners off the baseline.
No zip, no power, no explosivesness; all of which used to be Federer trademarks.
He never hits winners from neutral positions on the court.
In the past you could guarantee at least one spectacular winner in each game. Now you'll be lucky to get 2 or 3 in an entire match.

Re: Federer is finished
so true, during baseline rallies I am just waiting for the error to come its hard to watch. I think its hard for him because he is at a level where its hard to leave the game, I mean I think at World Number 16 Tsonga is the lowest ranked player he has lost to or maybe Gasquet in Rome (can't rememeber his ranking on that occasion) so he is still at such a high level.
Unfortunetly he has become just one of the pack now, he almost won all he needed to win too early in his career (not that he would change that) because I think in all honesty he is a little lost right now and I think thats why he is so keen on the Olympics, it is giving him a goal. Of course he wants to win more slams but at the end of the day he has won them already.
In the big moments he is always without fail playing someone who wants it so much more than he does, no matter what he says. You can list them, Djokovic, Nadal, Gasquet, Melzer, Tsonga all trying to further their careers.
I think thats why he beat Djokovic, he actually really wanted that match it gave him something to play for again.

Re: Federer is finished
Well I was bit surprised I though Fed was going to turn on the afterburners and get the revenge. But it seems that frankly Fed just can't flip the switch and he doesn't have the same explosiveness like he used on the forehand. Plus since he is moving a half step slower he is out of position more often now and this causes him to make a lot of errors with that forehand. Something that he rarely did in the glory days. His return looks a lot weaker as well he used to be able to get breaks a lot easier.

Fed's decline has been on and off for a few years - now it's simply more on than off. Pretty much as expected given his age and mileage.

Federer will probably win the USO defeating Djokovic enroute.
Never write off anyone especially one with the talent that Roger has.

He is fading sure, and I agree with Cas that whereas before one was always waiting the explosive winner, now we are waiting for the error - well this anxious Fed fan is anyway
Still, what a ride it has been, and there is still one more great moment at least I am sure in the old man. Form is temporary after all, but class is permanent

OMG, he's turning into a "Nadal"...
But i know what you mean. The winners he hits are no longer coming from a state of sovereignty but out of desperation. It's a 50/50 situation every time.
I bet the neutral viewers still think it's great to watch him play but i prefer the Federer in control mode. I don't like him being chased on court. His reaction speed has seriously waned. Not much of a chance for Roj at the US open

Re: Federer is finished
I watched most of the first set of the match and after seeing Federer fail to convert any of his 3 break points and then losing the first set, I went to bed knowing Fed would lose this and he did. He lost, it's true, but despite the last set scoreline, it was a close match. It was Federer's to lose and he did. Good points above and I agree with them that as soon as they got into rallies, you knew Fed would more often than not, make an error.
It's not a huge concern and it doesn't mean he's finished. What it does underline clearly is that in future Federer is going to need the draw to help him out if he's to win a slam. Tsonga appears to push Federer but the fact these last two matches have gone to the wire suggests that if Fed gives it a bit more, he can beat him but there's no chance he'll always meet Tsonga in the later stages of a slam which is what matters. I'm more interested in Cinni to be honest, Fed hasn't won the Canadian in years and even then, only at his peak, so it's not an indication of much right now. Unlike other players too, Fed has gone out of tournaments early before and still gone on to easily to win big titles. 2009 is the prime example (following on from a bad 2008).

I will gladly predict that Rafa will drop in the rankings quicker than Fed....

Oh I agree with that Josiah; once Rafa slips it will be like off a cliff, with his game.

Re: Federer is finished
As he got further than Nadal or Murray does this mean they're also "finished" ?
BTW remind us, who's the only guy to beat Novak so far this year ?
