Which Players Do You Love To Hate?

The "whingers" thread has got me thinking. Everyone has their pet "hate" players. They're usually great players but you can't bear to have "your" team face them and in your eyes everything they do is wrong! Regardless of how good they are, when you see them taking the field against your team, you can't stand them.

Mine are as follows:

Richie McCaw. Sublime player but he steps over the line, influences the ref and gets away with it. Drives me nuts!

Shane Williams. It's that little jinking step he does when he sets off on a run. Has achieved so much, but when I see him do that jink I want to see him flattened

Lee Byrne. He appears SO arrogant and I hate the way he exaggerates the outstretched leg when catching a high ball.

Schalk Burger. I don't like a dirty player who shows no remorse.

Andy Goode when he was playing for Leicester against Wasps. Kick, kick and kick again. Followed by a pie.

Martin Corry when at Leicester against Wasps. Just because.

Whenever said Lions-qualified players played for the Lions (i.e Williams and Corry), I was nothing but 100% behind them. As soon as they went back to their respective countries, back to the hate

ROG, for Munster or Ireland

Brian O'Driscoll by Kiwis everywhere cos apparently he nearly died when tackled by a couple of poofball rugby players who wouldn't harm a fly and go to church every other day.

Jerry Flannery ,ever since he pretended to of been elbowed in the stomach and went down cant remember what game it was though .possibly vs Wasps

Usually guys that are just irritatingly good against England. Warburton looks like he is heading that way. Sexton, Bowe and Heaslip as well.

Can't believe I'm the first to say this, but Henson for being such a waste of talent. Although a friend of mine has a burning hatred of Paul James

It's completely irrational and I'm sure he's a lovely chap, but there's something I don't like about Sexton's pinched little face and his squinty scowl.

Chris Ashton because of that dive thing he does when scoring a try. It just drives me up the wall

Props who slap/head tap when a scrum goes down. Castro is the worst for this.

George Gregan, Bakkies Botha, Rob Andrew, Danny Grewcock, Austin Healey, Caleb Ralph, Mark Carter, Mike Tindall, Al Baxter, Matt Dunning, Quade Cooper, Ronan O'Gara, Sebastien Chabal, Eric Champ, Stirling Mortlock are a group I dislike for various reasons.

Dan Parks, Mike Phillips, Percy Montgomery

Used to be a keen hater of Hartley but he hasn't really done anything in a while to make me hate his guts.

I know every Scottish fan will automatically hate Byrne though because he's been a victim of foul play by their players on the last three Wales/Scotland games.; apparently it was all Byrne's fault that he's gets late tackled and taken out in the air.

Used to hate Biggar when he kept getting picked for Wales. Was playing woeful; only knew how to kick the ball down field. Didn't know how to run or defend. He used to try little chip kicks behind the on-rushing defence which never worked but just gave posession straight back to the opposition in our own half.

Dan BIGHEAD easy, they guy wins a few caps then thinks hes the bees knees,

also used t hate the entire england team in their period of dominance 2000/03 - however have gone to to respect and admire johnsonand wilkinson

clive woodward for taking as many of said squad on the 2005 lions 2 years later whenthe majority of them were past it and the game had moved on, and for destroying (on that tour) what the whole lions ethos is

mmccaw and carter - do these guys ever make mistakes? very annoying!

Rob Jones - although never watched him as a player i absolutely loath him as a pundit, so one eyed when it comes to west walians it is unreal

Gavin Henson, was good but all this fame has gone to pot, complains, moans about positions, get's chucked or released from clubs.

Now has his own tv programme which is nearly as bad as the only way is essex.

For me its BoD ,Mike Philips ,Kurtley Beale (disturbingly good player ) chris Ashton and of course Shane Williams for the simple fact that he makes people look idiotic when he steps them

Every time he score a try used to slap himself on the head.

Tana Umanga just for been so good, it seemed he used to float over the ground rather than run over it.

Gregan for THAT tackle on Wilson

Mitchell for ditching Cullen (whose running made Umaga look slow and clumsy)

I'd have to vote for Bakkies too... that bloke just can't help himself. I was never a fan of Richard Loe either. Basically any dirty players.

I agree he is an abrasive and physical character, but every team has one of them, and he is really not a bad guy.

Just loves the physical stuff.

Yeah I don't hate him but he has been a bit too dirty in the past. Agree Loe was a bit of an animal. And who was it that bit Fitzy ear? They never found the missing bit.

Hook - for some reason when I think he is going to do ok, he plays so badly, and likewise when I am slagging him into a heap he comes out and plays a pretty decent game. And that is in both the Ospreys and Welsh (and I guess Lions) shirts.

Generally Any English/Irish player that gets huge praise in their first season (Earls, Armitage, Ashton, Fitzgerald, Sexton etc), as for some reason they are made out to be almost immortal.

Sean O'Brian - purely becasue they bang on about how he knows he can run through anyone, yet I remember Jon Davies (the centre) picking him up on his shoulder, matching him back ten yards and then smashing him into the ground as if he were a light weight. Also I dislike him for the little set to at PYS this season, when he almost beheaded little Dan Newton off teh ball and after the whistle (p.s. I know that others also deserve a heap of blame for the incident). That said he is a good player

Has to be Lawrence Dallaglio, don't get me wrong he was a great player but grrrr I can't stand him and I don’t even know why!
Even his own fans used to boo him when the teams were announced before a game.

I even tried to calm my rage towards him by reading his book but had to stop as I was up all-night after reading a couple of chapters due to being full of yet more hate towards him.

Has to be....................bananaman, he should be on primetime american TV as a wrestler (dancer). What is he doing on a rugby pitch, another one with squinty eyes!

Riki Flutey - past his sell by date by a couple of years,took the England spot of better inside centres. Overrated by many.

Shontayne Hape - one of Martin Johnson's favourites. An average Kiwi rugby league player who has given too many England caps. Wouldn't be able to get a backline running even if surrounded by the most exciting players ever.

Hendre Fourie - an overrated mediocre South African rugby player who took the England spot of more talented English youngsters. Only interest in him comes from the bottom clubs in the AP yet he is an England player.

Gavin Henson - so much hype, his rugby playing abilities are overrated, causes trouble wherever he goes. A reality TV star, not rugby player. Has more in common with the likes of Peter Andre and Jordan who I also dislike.


I like Sexton but he bloody frustates me when he played against Saracens and when he plays for Ireland against England as he seems to go up a notch or two. It seems as if he never misses a kick.

How could anyone dislike angel faced Matt Dunning is beyond belief! A sweet pie eating man of great charm..

I think I dislike the who genres of British scrum halfs who always seem to be standing at the back of a ruck waving their arms and pointing for the ref to ping someone or something when they should just get on with it and whip the ball out to the back line

After hearing that I now dislike him as well. Can't stand 'self help' books. I'd have got a clip round my ear from my dad if he ever caught me reading self indulgent crap like that.

Florence Dayglo, he always really annoyed me because he never shut up about how great he was and how every decision that went against him was so unjust. That and the cowardly punch on Corry that got a measley one week ban (below the minimum for the offence) because he was due to retire and the RFU wanted to sell more tickets for the final (the ban ran out just in time for him to play and then the Pests went and sodding won). Just a general hate of Wasps for ruining so many final days when the form book said they had no right to, particularly during the possible treble season!

The missus can't stand Hartley which is quite amusing.

Ronan O@Gara. Have always hated him, don't know why....but the he lost us the Lions tour, so reason enough.

Chris Paterson. Sure he's a nice guy, but worst player to have ever graced the international scene. They way scots bang on about him does my head in.

you have to give Percy credit for not losing his cool there, i personally would have him up.

ashton because of his dive- the most irritating thing is that he comes across quite well in interviews.

also matt dawson (not now but when he played) just looked quite cocky.

one player i surprisingly do like though is wilkinson.

Surely all of these are reasons to hate Martin Johnson not the players. And that Fourie comment is almost ironic coming from a Saracens supporter
