nope, Federer had the first match, but Murray and Nadal started about an hour later only on the next court if I remember correctly because rain was forecast. The rain duly arrived shortly after Federer had won with Murray two sets to the good. Murray then needed to go out and play two more sets the next day while Federer rested with his feet up...
I must say, I find the US Open scheduling to be completely baffling at times. Do you really want guys to have to play matches FOUR days in a row? Crazy...

Oh no.....The Murray fans still complain (maybe rightfully) that Murray was tired as he played Nadal second and even had to finish his match teh folowing day. (Final played on Monday).

I wanted to know the stats of how many evening session semi finalists won the final the following day since beginning of flushing meadow (79 or 80?).
I bet it's 1 out of 3 or 4.

Gilles Muller(LUX) vs. Rafael Nadal(ESP)[2]
Men's Singles - Quarterfinals
Novak Djokovic(SRB)[1] vs. Janko Tipsarevic(SRB)[20]
Arthur Ashe Stadium
7:00 PM Women's Singles - Quarterfinals
Serena Williams(USA)[28] vs. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova(RUS)[17]
Men's Singles - Quarterfinals
Roger Federer(SUI)[3] vs. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga(FRA)[11]
= =========================================
The draw AND scheduling in particular are certainly not helping a 30yo player.

How so? If that 30-year-old completes his game today he'll be on schedule whilst all players in the lower half of the draw will have to play two matches in two days.

Cause the problem is not the bottom half of the draw (yet maybe). But having to play Djoko who has a much easier semi and then most likely would have finished his match today while Federer Tsonga is more likely to be atough match played tomorrow.

The only way I'd agree with you there is if Federer doesn't complete his match today. A fairer solution would have been to play the Fourth Round matches first up on the show courts and followed immediately by the quarters.

But even if he completes it today, the draw and timing won't be as good as for Djoko. Playing a tough match after the ladies quarter which itself starts at 7pm is very disrupting for the following day, especially knowing that it is very unlikely the match will start at all today.

I agree it isn't ideal but those in the other half risk being even more compromised come the semi-finals as they look likely to have to play their quarters and semis on back-to-back days. It always seems to be the US Open that struggles to find fair solutions for all concerned.

Yes, though for their own semi, it's much fairer as they have relatively easy opponents. If they end up playing the semi first (as most likely), their disadvantage will be largely cancelled.

I'm a Murray fan, and the way Federer played that day he'd have won regardless, BUT the scheduling was silly, and Murray did clearly look tired in that final...

McEnroe and Lendl in the 80s were already complaining about the super Sat scheduling. Lendl was robbed of a proper final after having to struggle crazy v Pat cash late in the evening (5 sets).
But do they care?
That's why to me it's the worst slam by a long distance (though it has many things to make it a good one). Either they have little understanding about the sport and therefore should give that slam to another country or they know but don;t care enough. I suspect it gives them a way to pick a winner and make the mjority of fans happy. Last year they clearly wanted Nadal get is career slam. Organisers like those kind of history moments.

Re: US Open Day 9 06/09
Tenez, I disagree that the US open is the worst slam, it certainly has the worst scheduling without question. But the value of the American market and the fact that it is the second most historic slam in my mind still allows it to be the clear #2 in terms of slams.
But it could be a better and fairer event if they canned stupid saturday. However I don't think stupid saturday makes it less important to win, it just makes it a lot harder on the second semi and less fair. In terms of a players marketability and prestige I still think that the USO after wimbeldon is the one slam that the players would like to get after wimby which is sort of the mecca of the sport.
It is sad that they don't respect the event more and succumb to the almighty dollar. But the idea of giving it to another country would never ever happen and would destroy the history of the event.
