West Ham lose the Olympic stadium Empty West Ham lose the Olympic stadium

Post by Crimey Tue 11 Oct 2011, 6:28 am

The deal to award West Ham the Olympic Stadium after the London 2012 Games has collapsed, the BBC has learned. The board of the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) has ended negotiations amid concerns over delays caused by the ongoing legal dispute with Tottenham. The OPLC, government and Mayor of London have instead agreed the stadium will remain in public ownership.

A new tender process will be opened for an anchor tenant who will now lease the stadium for an an annual rent. The winning bidder would rent the stadium rather than purchase it outright and bear the majority of any redevelopment costs. The new tender process will be launched this week and any interested bidders will have to submit proposals by January.

Strained finances

A fund of £50m has been set aside from public money to convert the 80,000-capacity stadium at Games time to a 60,000-seater venue afterwards. The post-Games stadium will be capable of hosting major athletics events and Premier League football.

That opens the possibility for Championship football club West Ham and their bid partner Newham Council to submit a new, lower risk proposal which could still see them move in after London 2012. With West Ham's finances under strain following their relegation from the Premier League last season, the new arrangement could be much more attractive as it would only cost around £2m a year to lease the stadium. That money will help offset estimated running costs of more than £5m a year.

The OPLC has decided to take drastic action because of the uncertainty being caused by the legal challenges from Tottenham but also Leyton Orient. Both clubs are contesting the original decision to award the stadium to West Ham because of their reliance on a £40m loan from Newham Council, which they say is effectively state aid. Spurs are seeking a judicial review of the decision and the next hearing at the High Court was due to be held next Tuesday.

But to complicate matters further, an anonymous complaint was made to the European Commission last week which could have meant even further delays. And despite London Mayor Boris Johnson's ultimatum to Spurs last week to settle the dispute before next Tuesday and accept a funding package to help redevelop their White Hart Lane ground, the OPLC had lost confidence in a quick resolution.

Public money

The clock is ticking for the OPLC because it has set a deadline of 2014 for the new tenants of the stadium to move in. For that to happen, planning permission must be submitted by March 2012 to ensure work starts immediately after the Games. The prospect of a never-ending battle in the courts raised fears that the stadium could lie idle for years after the Olympics had finished. The other catalyst for the U-turn is London's bid for the 2017 World Athletics Championships.

Last week's visit of the inspection team from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) was dominated by the continuing uncertainty over the stadium's future and, in particular, the running track. With London facing a real contest against Doha in November's vote, the government and mayor wanted to send a strong message to the IAAF that they are committed to staging the event in the Olympic Stadium. But the latest twist to the controversial saga will raise serious questions about how such an important decision could be thrown back into confusion with just 10 months to go to the Games. There will also be concerns over why another £50m of public money is going to be poured into a stadium which has already cost over £500m.

This is an absolute joke, its all because of Leyton Orient aswell isnt it?

I heard Barry Hearn a few months back going on about how they weren't taken seriously over their bid and how West Ham moving into their catchment area was going to drive them out of business. Orient are a league 1 team could they afford the rent on the stadium never mind manage to fill it?
As for driving them out of business its not like their fans are going to decide to abandon them because theres a bigger club around the corner hes tried to hold the Council and Government to ransom got nothing for it now hes not giving up

Read the below story regarding this on the Daily Mash.

"SOMETIME football club West Ham has added 'winning stadium bids' to its list of inabilities.

West Ham recently had a go at building a new club shopTottenham has defeated the Ray Winstone factory's bid to leave the Olympic stadium half empty by using the legal equivalent of an 89th minute shot ricocheting off Rob Green's face and into the net.

Rather than hosting 20 barely-suppressed riots each year, the stadium will now be rented out to events that have a hope of making any money and will not necessarily have to involve racial abuse.

West Ham chairman and Minder character, David Sullivan, said: "We want to show that we're more than just a hopeless football club so we're updating our website to make sure it crashes every two minutes and we're going to release our own computer game that can only be played on a ZX Spectrum.

"By adding 'being rubbish at hanging on to a purpose built stadium handed to us on a plate' the time has come for us to push ineptly forward."

The club's building-based awfulness stems from their current stadium's actual name, The Boleyn Ground, with experts agreeing that having a fat, sweaty bearded bloke humping away on top of you for ages then having your head cut off is slightly better than watching West Ham play football.

In a bid to broaden their lack of appeal they have also adopted the most effeminate chant in football, the ludicrous self-belief they somehow won England the world cup and a film in which people are meant to believe Frodo can beat people up.

But Sullivan feels that construction awfulness is the club's future, adding: "I'm having a look at whether we can tear down the Bobby Moore stand and have it rebuilt using Ryvita.""

West Ham will still be moving into the stadium. This is all a bit of a none story.

All that is going to happen is that West Ham will 'rent' the stadium rather than holding the 'lease' or something like that. West Ham will probably end up paying less to play in the stadium.

This deal is quite pathetic and has only been done in order to shut up Tottenham and Leyton Orient.

Ever since the idea for an Olympic Stadium in East London was thought off, it was pretty obvious that West Ham were going to move in to it.

What should have happened from the start was to design an 80,000 stadium for the Olympics which would then be turned into a 60,000 football stadium for West Ham with a proper removable running track.

Therefore you would have had a:-

60,000 football stadium (without running track)
45,000 athletics stadium.

Barry Hearn is a complete idiot.

He has stated that he doesn't want West Ham taking over the stadium because it would eat into Leyton Orient's attendances but then back Tottenham's bid to have the stadium.

That is no to West Ham who are already in the same vicinity as Leyton Orient and yes to Tottenham and yes to have two bigger teams in the area.

Tottenham don't really want the stadium either. They just don't want West Ham to have the stadium. Why would Tottenham want another team to possibly be able to challenge at the top of the Premier League.

It still seems that West Ham are confident of getting the stadium, I had a mailshot from Karren Brady to that effect yesterday.

I don't know where I sit as a West Ham fan. The pictures from inside make it look like the view will be appaling if we get it, but then if we don't leave Upton Park, we'll never be capable of progressing upwards.

The only reason I would want the stadium is to shut Hearn up and to keep Tottenham out of it.

@Sir. bagerhands:

Great find - hilarious!

I read a similar story on the BBC website and as far as I can tell, sportsville is correct. West Ham will still relocate to the Olympic stadium, they will just be renting instead of buying it.

Wonder what it'll be called though. Will it stay as the Olympic Stadium, or will West Ham be able to sell the naming rights to sponsors?

Suggestions on a postcard please. Wink
