Fewest Fights to Champion
I've was reading up on Tommy Morrison (interesting topic in itself - career cut short by HIV among other things)... but this led me to see that he lost his WBO heavyweight title to Michael Bentt in a fight in 1993. I wasn't too familiar with Bentt (American citizen - born in London), but this victory over Morrison was only his 12th pro fight I believe. Albeit the WBO title, this is still makes him a world heavyweight champion after just 12 fights which is impressive. Who else has one world titles after a low number pro fights?
Secondly, Bentt then just fought one more fight (a loss to Herbie Hide) before retiring. Very strange career. What other boxers have won world titles during such a short career?
Thanks

Oscar 12, the cuban guy rigondoeux (sp) I think is 7, but I think thats an interim piece of crap,
Someone always trumps this question, with some old school guy that's done it in 3.

Saensak Muangsurin won his world title in his third pro fight.
Pete Rademacher challenged Patterson for the heavyweight title in his pro debut, but was unsuccessful.

yeah it seems it was his 8th fight. I'm not sure how someone gets a shot at the title so quickly (just over a yr into their career). Also, Spinks did then continue to have further boxing career, what I found strange about Bentt is that he pretty much stopped boxing after he lost the title - just a career of 5 years.

Re: Fewest Fights to Champion
Saensak Muangsurin is the name, chaps. Third fight it was, in the mid-70s, less than a year after his pro debut (WBC light-welter).
The ultimate could have happened - Olympic gold medallist Pete Rademacher challenged Floyd Patterson for the world heavyweight title in his first pro bout, and got predictably swamped, after flooring Patterson early.

That's him Windy, I knew it was one of the Muangsurins, couldn't remember whether it was Saensak or Thgiohghs.

Re: Fewest Fights to Champion
How the hell can someone get a shot at the title in their 1st pro fight?! We often talk about the klitschkos taking on poor opposition - if they or any current world champ defended their title against a fighter making their debut they would get shot down. Why were champs like Ali and Patterson giving/being made to give shots to relative novices?

Perhaps just slightly more than gay weddings had to do with Union's ' Prediction league ' thread.
Thanks, captain. Not often I'm quicker out of the blocks than you are.

Re: Fewest Fights to Champion
Just googled this as I was curious.
Came up with the following
http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=008222&cat=boxer
Samson Dutch Boy Gym won the WBF super flyweight title in his 4th fight.
More surprising however was the fact that he retired underfeated after 43 fights!!! Never fought outside of Thailand however.

Re: Fewest Fights to Champion
Michael Bentt went into acting after he lost his title (remind you of anyone?)
Turning to acting, he was the second actor cast after Will Smith in Michael Mann's Ali. Michael landed the coveted role of Sonny Liston, while also serving as both Smith's chief sparring partner and assistant trainer during the six months of boxing training before principal photography began on the film.
Bentt has contributed essays as a writer for Bert Sugar's Fight Game and the HBO boxing website. He has commentated on boxing matches for Bob Arum's Top Rank Boxing on ESPN in the United States, Filmnet in The Netherlands, and BBC Radio in the United Kingdom.
In 2006, he had an on camera audition in Puerto Rico as part of HBO World Championship Boxing's search for an expert boxing commentator for the networks newest boxing segment. Eventually the candidates were narrowed down to Bentt and the then recently retired former Heavyweight Champion, Lennox Lewis.
In 2003, he was the first actor-in-residence at Northampton Community College in Pennsylvania, where he played the title role in Othello, The Moor of Venice.
He has worked with directors Michael Mann (four times), Ron Shelton (twice), Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone, and Bill L. Norton (five times). He also starred as Biggis (El Plaga) opposite Beanie Sigel, Noriega, and Damon Dash in the Dash-directed hip hop cult classic State Property 2.
He also appeared in Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger. Director Michael Mann handpicked Bentt to play Herbert Youngblood, who along with Dillinger staged the imfamous Crown Point Jail break. This marked the fourth such time that Mann had directed Bentt.
Among his guest starring roles in television dramas are 'Calvin Trainier', a Suge Knight-esque record label honcho in Michael Mann's Robbery-Homicide Division (CBS-TV),as 'Charles Lambert', an NFL linebacker who years earlier suffered sexual abuse at the hands of his adoptive father, and as 'Dion'- an imprisoned homosexual snitch in Sons of Anarchy (FOX-TV).

I guess the fights were allowed due to Rademacher and Spinks being Olympic Gold medalists.SportsmanGC wrote:How the hell can someone get a shot at the title in their 1st pro fight?! Good shout on Shumenov. Looked in danger of being one of the youngest to unify at one point as well.

If I remember rightly he failed a brain scan after the Hide loss and retired on medical grounds.
I also remember him as one of, if not the biggest bell end in the sport.
