Magic Performances Empty Magic Performances

Post by oxring Tue 01 Nov 2011, 7:55 pm

Quite simply - a thread to post youtubes/dailymotions/googlevideo highlights of your favourite fights/performances from a boxer.

Hopefully - we get a good many and can form a bit of an archive - of classic material. Post the link and your reasons for why you think it should be there.

RJJ-Toney
RJJ isn't everyone's cup of tea (sorry coxy) but this was an incredible performance. Even when the commentators are praising Toney's punches, by and large RJJ is coming back with 2 or 3 hard shots of his own. Incredible handspeed and reflexes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Osxyd7h6N-0

I was originally intending to move this to the vault and post the links to every fight here - but thanks to your interest - we've too many fights!

So if you're bored at work and fancy a youtube to cheer you up, sit back, browse and put a classic on to cheer you up.

Muhammad Ali v Cleveland Williams
The absolute peak performence in the glorious career of Ali. Williams was far from his best, but The Big Cat allowed Ali the chance toflaunt his unique abilities with a one of a kind grace that hid a vicious killer instinct.

Just watched the RJJ v Toney highlights. I think one of the commentary team summed it up well when they pointed out how Jones was just never directly infront of Toney. He could pepper him with shots and then be in a completely different place before James had even realised! Magic stuff.

Yep. Utterly dominated a fight that was supposed to be tough. And whilst no-one was picking the big-cat to win - few thought Ali would do that. Incredible performance that pushed the idea of the limitations of "the big men" in boxing.

Not that amazing a performance, that - for me.

Ali-Frazier 1
For me, one of the finest fights in boxing history - more so than either of the returns. Fabulous performance from Frazier, displaying guts, heart, underrated defence and a lethal left hook.

Happy to put in Calzaghe Lacy.

Not up to the standards of other entries I'm sure, however, it was great to see a Brit put in a classy, dominant, winning display in a fight many thought he'd lose or struggle in.

Certainly for me Joe's best performance...Won a lot of respect for that....

Never bought into Lacy as much as others but that was the performance of a quality champion..

Leaves us guessing just how great he could've been.

Hearns-Cuevas, 1980

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4BZ2-hBbsA

Hearns was just plain frightening on this particular night. Remember, he was only twenty-one (Cuevas wasn't much older, mind you), was having his first taste of the big time, and was facing an experienced, long-serving and highly competent champion, who also happened to be one of the hardest punching Welterweights of all-time: and yet, Hearns absolutely annihilated him. It's long been my contention that only three or four Welterweights in history could have beaten Hearns at the weight, Ray Leonard obviously proving himself to be one of them.

Jack Dempsey - Jess Willard
To be honest, the more I watch this, the more convinced I become this should have been stopped in the first. Willard had nothing left at the end of that first.
6:50 - the best uppercut you will see for a long long time.

Mayweather vs Corrales

Best performance of Floyd's career I think, punch perfect against a top opponent.

Only the first 30 seconds of the fight on the first link and truly terrible entrance from Floyd.

Duran Vs Barkley

One of my favourite fights. Duran giving up pretty much every physical attribute going. Nearly a decade older and 4 divisions above his best weight managing to eek out a decision against a much bigger, younger opponent who had stopped the man who had rolled Roberto like a drunk... The knock down in the 11th was beautiful and was enough to steer it in his favour.. Love this performance and fight.

Hearns and Dempsey are both big favourites of mine. Seeing the way Dempsey circles and stalks before turning into this brutal monster is always a kind of pleasure.

Hearns' composure and effortless defense as he took excellent champions apart at his best was plain chilling.

Paul Daniels did a Halloween special about 20 years ago when a big casket with spikes slammed shut on him in some house of horrors type place. Debbie was crying her eyes out, as was a very young Tino. He somehow survived though, as I have seen him on TV over the last two decades.

Truly magical performance.

Ezzard Charles v Joe Louis
It might not be an obvious one as Joe was seen as being washed up, but he did go on to record numerous wins after this. Also Charles' performence was a boxing masterclass. Here's a guy, former middleweight, now at heavyweight fighting one of the most feared and great champions in it's history. Not only is not over awed but he utterly dominates the fight to my eye. It's not a shut out, Joe has his moments but Ezzard's use of the ring against the bigger more powerful foe is excellent.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQGryRCbLzU

Also a post fight clip with a sad image of Louis and a respectul, articulate Charles with a visibly swollen eye

Mike Tyson - James Buster Douglas

"This must be, this HAS to be, one of the biggest, if not the biggest upset in Boxing history!" - Colonel Bob Sheridan

Yes, indeed it was, many forget that just because of the upset that this was actually a really good fight! 42 -1 underdog (more like 1000-1) took on Mike Tyson in Japan and even though all the antics in the build-up in hindsight could feasibly see an upset coming, no one did!!

Amir Khan - Marcos Maidana

"It's the swings, it's just the swings Amir has to watch out for now... OHHH!" - Jim Watt

Yes, Amir most certainly had to watch out for the swings, but Maidana managed to load up a thunderous punch which almost shook British Boxing. A breathtaking fight which was a candidate for fight of the year. A typical boxer versus swarming slugger produces yet another classic battle.

Manny Pacqiaou - Ricky Hatton

"It's the speed! It's the speed that's KILLING Hatton in there!" Ian Darke

Yes, the speed was much too much for poor Ricky on this night, he just couldn't deal with the punches coming at him from all angles, a true demolition job of one of Britains most popular ever boxers.

Probably the most high profile fight on these shores in the Cruiserweight division, two power punchers going at it with a slightly slow first round it really builds into a fight in the second with an outrageous show of power in finishing.

Turned out to be a decent idea actually...
The first 4 rounds here are absolute irrefutable classics both men going at it showing all their offensive skills! Pacqiaou turns this from a great fight, to a great performance.

Bernard Hopkins - Felix Trinidad

"Hopkins believes! Whether Trinidad can beat the belief out of him remains to be seen!" - Jim Lampley

The crowd scream Tito, but Hopkins believes, this must be up there with one of Boxings big shocks. Even though this was Trinidad moving up to Middleweight against a champion that has defended his title countless times he was a huge favourite going into this. However Bernard has other ideas and pulls out one of his greatest ever performances.

Marvin Hagler - Thomas Hearns

"Haglers somehow shaking those right hands off though!!"

The most savage exchange of all time? Probably!

Lennox Lewis - Vitali Klitschko

"This is Mickey Ward Versus Arturo Gatti in the Heavyweight division!" - Jim Lampley

Lewis came in a bit overweight and Vitali tried to take full advantage, Vitalis chin was seriously tested with oneof the most vicious uppercuts ever, but took it and kept fighting on, a true classic and Lewis' last ever fight.

Michael Katsidis - Graham Earl

"Earl seems to look sorry look on himself as if he's feeling sorry for himself in there, but I guess that's just the way he looks!" - Duke McKenzie

Never quite figured out what Duke meant by that, but he does talk utter nonsense sometimes, but he's a legend so can be forgiven! earl should have chosen to box but instead he brawled and my God was it a brawl!

Achilles!! Achilles!! Achilles!!
