WTF - Draw Announced!!

First topic message reminder :

The draw has just been made and is as follows-

Group A
Djokovic
Murray
Ferrer
Berdych

Group B
Nadal
Federer
Tsonga
Fish


Good draw for Murray and Djokovic considering they have a couple of niggling injuries and are not up against any serious contenders. Ferrer and Berdych I doubt would be a real threat. I expect both top seeds to reach the semis undefeated. Murray has done well to avoid his bogeyman, Nadal, who has always been a huge stumbling block when fully fit.

Group B seems the more interesting draw. Federer unlucky to get his greatest rival and Tsonga who has had the better of him this year too. This one to me is a tough one to call. I expect Nadal to make the semis and the second spot to be between Fed/Tsonga as I cannot pick one of them here.

What are your thoughts?

I think Nadal is favourite to win in light of what is going on with the other guys. No one really knows how severe Djoko's shoulder problem is. I felt he was playing okay in Paris and even in the Troicki match though he lost a set he still played well. I think pulling out before Tsonga was tactical in case he aggravated that injury further.

I would have put Murray up as joint favourite but he seems to lose his composure sometimes when playing the big guys. I think lots of things have to go his way if he was to win this i.e the other top 4 need to perform way below their level or get knocked out early.

Federer's 12 match run to me is no indication he is the one to beat. Looking at his last few wins, he has not played 1-3 so its hard to assess where his game is at. For him I think a turning out would be a victory over Nadal. That should inspire confidence and send a message to the others in the groups.

A total outsider to clinch the trophy would be Tsonga for me.

Some intriguing thoughts.

I shall still stick with what I predicted. I think it is the year of the underdogs this year.

I would love for Murray to win it, but I just can't see it.

tenez - are you talking about has he ever beaten higher seeds in the WTF's? Because remember in 07 when he got to the final, before being on the receiving end of a federer masterclass, he beat nadal (2) Djokovic (3) and Roddick (5) who were all higher seeds than him as he was no 6.

As for your comment on davy he has been in it 5 times, twice not making it out of the groups, a semi finalist, a finalist before winning it 2009. In 2005 he beat 3 players ranked below him, in 06 and 07 he was 1-1 against lower ranked players and lost to a higher ranked one. In '08 he lost to novak twice but beat both lower ranked players and only when he won it in 2009 does this support your theory as he beat rafa, feds and del potro who were higher ranked.
To sum up, both your points have very little backing did you just make it up as you went along? :O

I think it has been an intriguing WTF. I hope people do not draw the conclusion that it was much more the top guys bar Federer under-performing so badly much rather than Ferrer and Tsonga playing some refreshingly good tennis.

I agree it has been an interesting tournament and most of the matches have been very competitive. Lots of three setters.

It's good to have some other players in the semi's other than the top four.

I know it seems far-fetched, by I think Tsonga being Nadal's group is bad for him. Federer is the form man and I think the guy to beat.

I think Murray is struggling and I think a faster court helps Berdych even more. I think Berdych will win their match up.
