Neil Lennon has played down his bust-up with Spanish referee Iturralde Gonzalez during Celtic's friendly at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday night.

The Hoops boss clashed with the official after 35 minutes of the match at San Mames which was staged to raise funds for local youth teams in Bilbao and ended in a goalless draw.

Lennon, who is currently serving a four-match Scottish Football Association touchline ban, was ordered from the dugout by Gonzalez and was escorted to the stand by a security guard.

It was reported that Gonzalez revealed he will not forward a report to Hampden but the Celtic boss claimed the Spanish official over-reacted in any case.

Speaking on his Twitter site he said: 'Ref over fussy as I disputed a free-kick - anyway we played some scintillating stuff against a class side and we should have won.

'Amazing game. We played fantastic football. The young boys were immense while senior guys played superbly, so proud.'

the man is become a professional joke of manager. spends more time with the crowd then he does on the sideline.

This has been simply one of the most laughable seasons. Constantly in trouble with the SFA, moaning about refs, clashes with players and officials. They need to just settle him down or punt him.

He will become a liability very soon, the guy has some serious issues which will not be resolved in the pressure cooker that is the Old Firm.

I actually dread to think what may happen next season with him and McCoist - if the OF game earlier this season is anything to go by we could be in for WWIII next season.

He should have never been allowed to manage Celtic in the first place - he should have been made to do a few seasons in the lower leagues first. Saying that hough - his ego would have never allowed it.

If I was McCoist next season it'd be a case of winding up Lennon and watching him go. I mean the head-to-head at Parkhead was sparked by McCoist telling Lennon to leave his players alone, but judging by Lennon's reaction you'd think Ally had just told him he was boffing his wife.

Now I'm not saying McCoist's an angel by any stretch of the imagination, and there's a probability that more 'colourful' language was used, but if something as meaningless as that sets of Neil Lennon then I'd be doing it at any & every opportunity. That might sound cynical but hey, you gain an advantage wherever you can and as long as you're not breaking any rules then you might as well go for it.

Can't stand the guy, and the 606ers with their sob stories and messiah claims just make it worse. Yes it IS horrible that he's getting death threats and bullets etc but this is the same guy who instigated a hate campaign against match officials and sat back and watched the results. Lenny was well within his right to go mad, the tackle on the young lad Conroy was a disgrace, if you are wronged you shopuld let them know and its great to see that the vile bullying Lennon is subjected to wont stop him from leading from the front

Yeah a charity friendly and the tackle on young Ryan Conroy was a disgrace and certainly not fitting of a so called friendly

football is physical sport. every week people jump in 2 footed making horror tackles.

you can't expect the ref to get everything right (ive reffed sunday league before its hard to see everything however much you try) but to mouth off at him and refuse to leave the dugout getting the game nearly called is petulant behavior from a pathetic excuse of a manager.

Thats utter pish, he isn't an embarrassment either i was at Dens Park for his debut, he only signed two days earlier and he was booed and called a fenian this and a fenian that, it became the norm very quickly, he had played 8 frienlies up here befnre he signed for Celtic and got no problems, he was the captain of N.I and a hero to the crowd but then its death threats within 6 weeks, only an imbecile would claim a footballer, not a naughty person or a killer deserves that

I also dont think Cfltic would struggle in the prem with the amount of dross thats clogging up the bottom half of the table and Swansea are one of the best Championship sides with reject donkeys like Beattie and Dobbie

Nobody deserves death threats, certainly not a football manager or his family however Lennon needs to calm it down or he will end up in further bother.

If he does not win the title this year his number at Parkhead will be up, maybe he knows that and that is why he is carrying on the way he has been.

They are still donkeys tho mate, also there ir absolutely no chance Lennon will be sacked, win or lose the title, Celtic cant and wont keep on sacking managers that dont win the league, its the best they have played since season 03/04, you can be sure he wont be sacked, i agree tho that he needs to calm down

I've heard a rumour that Lennon will talk up for McCoist at his appeal to further tarnish the SFA, the whole place needs an overhaul
