Come on. As much as I dislike Barton, he doesn't deserve to be assaulted by idiots or anyone else. He has every right to go into a night club or wherever he chooses. Its the off season and players can do as they please.

Hooliganism refers to behavior that is unruly, bullying, or vandalizing. The word was round before the rowdy football fan.

Who said it was a football fan? The assumption is he got assaulted because of who he is. I doubt he rubbed anyone up the wrong way. Even if he did, it doesn't mean he should be assaulted for it. The guy's an ass no doubt, but he has every right to enjoy a night out.

Joey Barton was actually pretty poor last year, he was good for Newcastle the year before, but Henderson was good for Sunderland. In terms of talent and form they're both about equal, but Henderson has good behaviour and youth on his side.

If Barton had continued his form from 10-11 season and kept his slate clean he might have actually been considered.

It does seem like Downing in particular gets in the squad because he bumlicks. Hodgson seems mainly want players who don't challenge what he says. Barton hasn't been a good player for a while though, so he's a bit silly for hyping himself. He loves the attention.

All managers want players that won't challenge what they say, it's funny in that players which challenge managers tend to seriously overrate themselves. I don't think that's why Downing is in the squad though, it'll be due to the fact that he's one of the only English players who can provide width on the left side and is left footed. Adam Johnson prefers to play on the right.

Martin Kelly was called up because he was happy to be a stand-by unlike the alternatives.

I've already said why Stewart Downing is in the team, and think it's a more convincing reason than that he was bought for a lot of money which actually has done more to ruin his reputation rather than strengthen it.
