Old 606 Empty Old 606

Post by incontinentia Fri Oct 05, 2012 10:24 am

I first discovered 606 golf on the BBC site in 2008, probably years after most of you. As a place for sporting banter twas hard to beat. There were some memorable posters: 150tothepin, GJ the aussie stud, tigerwoodswannabe, kirkygolfer and subpar to name but a few. And some awesome discussions too.

Have any of these guys shown up around here?

Care to reminisce about the good old days?

Cant remember when I first started posting, must have been 2005 or something like that on the original BBC site. Anarchic days back then, some barnstorming arguments/debates.

Sounds like 606 was even better back in the day. I only started posting in November 2007, so it seems I missed some of characters listed above.

Mac I have no idea.
The emphasis was on genuine humour and tall tales. It the likes of Kwini and Drac who have elevated us to real golf discussion.
Jeff posted stuff about the Dunhill and nights out after- he played in a band around the bars in St Andrews.Spanish Nick Im sure was running a VAT scam from his office in Madrid and had to run off to Cypruss at short notice. Some of the stuff was LOL hilarious.

I was a reader (lurker) on the old 606 but never had a BBC account - only choosing to register here as a gesture of support.

Recall someone dubbed El_Wedgo_Pitcho (for the handle if nothing else), and wasn't there a character who claimed to be Italian and had an alter-virtual ego as a woman? I forget the name(s) though.

Sky,
Think that was the same gent who posted as GJthe Aussie Stud.

Hardly ever see RoderickSlyme any more, and venice is awol also.

Sad thing is that most of those who have departed just got sick and tired of dealing with the mods, both on 606 and on here.

The banter between 150tothepin/Donny and GJ the aussie stud was priceless at times, unfortunately the former could not stay out of trouble with the mods.

Sadly for me each time the board has metamorphosed its lost something..quite often some people. Still has its moments and some good debate but I can remember looking at my screen and howling with laughter on a fairly regular basis. But then again, I was young and unmarried and child free back then.........oh how I miss those days Cry

Regarding behavior ... I've always subscribed to only posting thoughts I would say to a person face-to-face. Leads to far greater civility, and should not hamper divergent opinions.

Nah, thats the whole point of being a message boards, you can say what you like without the constraints of a potential dust up. I remember Big Kev who according to him was about 8 foot tall and 32 stone, mind you he also hit the ball 650 yards and regularly shot in the low 60's....allegedly. Couldnt stand the bloke and nor him me and we regularly told each other which to be fair I doubt Id have done in real life if indeed he was the reincarnation (if he's dead) of Giant Haystacks.

Im gutted I missed the meet up in Kent Dyna, had a major family crisis on the Friday and couldnt make it and still regret it.
I think the point is that everyones persona can be a bit different, bigger, whatever on here. Then when you meet up everyone is a bit more reserved, less openly opinionated (personally Ive no problem with people having opinions on a debating board, surely thats what they are for) at least until they have had a few drinks Id guess.
Ive met a few guys from here and always enjoyed their company.

I asked Rory at the Quail Hollow tournament that he (later that weekend) won, and he said he wasn't playing well enough to post!

lw1 was good at sticking up for fellow golfers who were struggling a bit, Duval and Robbie Karlsson come to mind.

And limeyatthebeach was warned off 606 by the BBC's mod's when he started to reprise stories of Brian Davis when they were both amateurs - unflattering to Davis of course.

chili used to play at Carnoustie but once again fell foul of the Beeb's mod's for the most innocuous reasons. Very knowledgeable.

Well after 606's demise most of the active posters came here. All was well for a while and we all liked the freedom (the beeb 606 site was quite PC) but tensions begun to arise re the censoring of posts and the heavy handedness or otherwise of the mods at the time. If I remember right the straw that broke the camels back was a story about a dog that had been tied to a car and dragged for miles for fun somewhere in Sussex. A heinous act indeed but for some reason the board just went loopy over sensitivities, pandering to sensitivities, outrage, character assassination, mod dictatorship, posting bans you name it, it was all thrown into the pot over a couple of days and a some people found it unacceptable, left and got their own forum set up. Some of us, less outraged by the outrage were left with feet in both camps.

Both forums together now are less busy than pre split, shame really but there you go.

Diggers wrote:...In retrospect the big silly fallout was pretty funny, all to do with mods being jealous of who did what and something Mac said about a dog.
With respect Digs, it had little to do with Mods jealousy and a lot to do with some who thought they could post anything detrimental to the forum, in the open and take personal digs at the admin w/o any comeback what-so-ever. I still have no idea why they thought this was either clever or was going to be allowed to slide - it was only ever going to have one winner. There may have been PMs as well but I wasn't privvy to any of them in my former guise.
There seems to be an assumption that mods/admin were doing all and sundry re. bans etc when those doing the assuming don't have any evidence (except say-so) to back it up. Even Davie and Mav weren't in a position to know anything at that point.

Sorry Navy, bit of a flipant comment. When I said that I was more referring to the spat between the ex golf mods who formed the new site and the admins. Just couldnt be bothered to explain myself in detail. It was Mercurio who took massive umbridge at Mac and went a bit tonto.
To say Mac isnt popular to this on the new site would be something of an understatement.

I'm reluctant to comment on the big silly fall-out, because that's exactly what it was.

However, I saw "Dog-gate" as the point where things came to a head. Trouble seemed to be brewing beforehand in terms of perceived unfair treatment between posters and where the line is drawn regarding banter v abuse.

LJ actually left sometime before all that I think.

I can't recall any similar issues of late, which is a credit to the contributors and mods.

Who was the Norn Irish lad who was big west ham fan prolific poster.
Way back in the day he told us about this young Irish kid Rory something shooting 61 round Portrush bound to be a major winner.Course nobody took a blind bit of notice.
Back to golf just found out that friends son won the County Open recently 7 under for 36.Down to -1.He is 19 now but 10 years back we used to sit in the garden summers evening beers in hand while the kid hit ball after ball into a net until it got dark. Not a blade of grass left on the lawn but shows you what can happen
