With the amazing performance which Li Na produced V Maria Sharapova in the Semi Final where she didn't just beat her but she (Li Na) absolutely took her (Sharapova) to the cleaners particularly when Sharapova was serving, could the much improved Li Na now go on to dominate the women's game with an iron fist just as Martina Navratilova did in the 1980's, and Billie Jean King in the 1970's?

Interesting thought gbn. Her game has improved out of all recognition since Carlos took over the coaching duties from her husband. She doesn't spray the ball round or lose her concentration and start berating him as in the past.

She is though already 30 so difficult to say how long she would be able to dominate if this form continues. Having said that she took time out to go to university in her early 20's so she hasn't got the "miles on her clock" like say Sharapoav and her new fitness regime paid real dividends today.

I honestly think your question may well be answered by what happens in the final. She hasn't dropped a set yet and won't fall for Azarenka's stalling tactics like the inexperienced Stephens did when the heat got to the Belarussian (but that's another thread?...)

If Li Na beats the no. 1 then I believe Serena would claim that top spot. Azarenka would certainly have deserved her time at the top and Serena would also rightly regain her crown for her recent run of form. Whether or not Li Na could potentially usurp both of them is something that would never have been up for discussion before the start of this tournament.

No.

1) She is soon to be 31.

2) Azarenka looks the likely bet should Serena allow the rest of the field a sniff.

3) Too many upcoming youngsters. Hampton and Stephens look good as do Robson and Watson. Bouchard is another upcoming talent that can do well.

With Azarenka having an injury, Li Na suddenly looks the hot favourite to win the women's final on Saturday.

But didn't Martina Navratilova dominate women's tennis until she was 38-40 ish years old?

Li Na is no Navratilova.

But she could well be if she manages to sustain the performance levels she produced V Maria Sharapova where not many players apart from Serena Williams completely took Sharapova's serve apart and also outrallied Sharapova on the baseline rallies.

If Li Na can win another 300 titles then I will agree to the comparison with Navratilova.

lk2 don't know anything about Bouchard who at 18 hasn't done anything on the WTA tour yet(?).

The up and coming talent does definitely include those other players you mention though what on earth Hampton is doing at 80 whatever in the world is a mystery to me. She was looking a cert to blow Azarenka off the court till her back problems. Then again she's already 23 so a late developer?

The two girls you missed out (there are doubtless others) are the young 21 year old Serb Bojana Jovanovski who took Stephens all the way in their three set match here plus 16 year old Croatian Donna Vekic who has a huge forehand and undoubtedly a similarly huge future.

Stephens looks like top 10 material some time soon but the others (including Robson) still have a way to go. If Serena doesn't dominate (and let's face it her body has quite often let her down before) Li Na has just as much chance as Azarenka of filling the void in the meantime (remember Azarenka like Li Na also has only won the one slam so far).

It is a start and by winning the Australian Open, it will be her second major title, and if she wins the French, she could get that Calendar year Grand Slam of winning majors.

Bouchard was quite the junior and also is a handy doubles player NB Smile

She is quick on her feet. Can improve her FH. She has time on her hands which can't be said for Li Na.

There is another reason why I for one would be happy if Li Na were to win the title and here goes.

Serena has her critics for her perceived lack of grace when she loses (and heaven knows the "2 worst weeks of my life2 comment about injuries following her loss to Stephens were pretty poor). She was already well on her way to losing the second set anyway before the back spams.

Azarenka in turn is often guilty of amazingly bad sportsmanship (her 10 min. medical timeout was clearly bending the rules somewhat today). If you don't believe me then check out what happened to Radwanska during her loss in Doha last year to Azarenka when she kept limping around the court like some wounded animal before storming back to win.

Li Na might sometimes hurl abuse at her husband but at least she has the grace to acknowledge good performances from her opponents and would make a considerably better role model for the youngsters than these two.

@NB... Na jests in her on-court interviews. She is quite humorous vis-a-vis her spouse.

Rodriguez's (who coached Henin) contributions to Na's game should not be ignored.
