Verratti is now mine ZZZ

I know Ibra has done it against England now, but before that people said he was crap because he didn't score against English teams. I even have a friend who is the classic example of that, he kept saying he was rubbish, then boom 35 yard overhead kick and he's the best striker in the world all of a sudden!

Was I the only one not that impressed with the overhead kick? It was incredible technique, but it was into an open goal...Philippe Mexes' one a week later was much, much better in terms of both technique AND boss-ness.

The goal was open, but it was a long way away, and the angle of the ball made it impossible to stop. It was probably more luck than judgement, but still incredible.

I saw the highlights of it. Was a good game.

El Sharawaary and Balotelli were awful, whilst Buffon (who was MOTM apparently) kept them in it.

Prandelli brought SES and Mario off for Osvaldo and Gilardinho and they suddenly looked good.

Great goal by the Dutch bloke (was it Lens or Maher, I can't remember)

Verratti came of the bench and did alright, but wasn't his sharpest (I guess as he isn't getting games for PSG), but good strength and a lovely finish for the goal. Florenzi came off the bench as was alright too.

Maher was the best player for the Dutch IMO

It was Lens for Holland Afro...good little player he is too. And did you hear about Huntelaar having a blood clot? It's looking serious that.

Lovely volley that Holland goal.

I heard something about that with Huntelaar. Could keep him out for quite a while. I don't know whether something like that can be career threatening.

That and he has been rubbish.

Never convinced he is that good. He is a decent finisher, but I always think he is predictable and if your defence is well prepared, he is easy to take out of the game.

Which is probably why he moves country a lot to face teams who don't know him as well

Just a note that Welbeck is third choice, not fourth choice at United. He has played more than Chicharito. Fergie has always maintained that four strikers is a necessity. Anyone who thinks he isn't good enough for England is wrong IMO.

Sozzy Azzy, Trebandowski has a fair point. I wouldnt say hes in front of Chicharito, he has played more, but I think them Fergie picks them depending on who we face & what they offer to each specific match.

He is amongst the best we have at the moment.

My opinion is though that if we want to compete at the latter stages of tournaments, we need to find better.

He would not get near the Spanish or German teams

I think he's improved this year as a player. I have seen him on the wing a few times and he isn't so bad, just lacking the cutting edge to be very effective there.

He poses physical problems for defences so I'd have no problem taking him as part of the squad. Heskey got more than 50 caps.

It depends. Alongside Van Persie I don't think Chicharito works. Welbeck is a better option. But being behind Van Persie and Rooney, two of the best strikers in the world is hardly shameful.

As for getting into other teams, other than Rooney, I don't think any of our players could get into the Spanish or German sides. I'd put Welbeck alongside Benzema for France. Seems to me a no brainer he'd get into the Belgian side, and the Dutch side has Van Persie, who is the best striker in the world.

We persevere in the hope that he suddenly clicks and carries us to glory.

Most other countries would have dropped him and moved on ages ago

I don't think they'd drop him, but it seems like he has this reputation as a game changer for England when it doesn't seem to be like that at all. Not since 2004!

Ultimately, he is no Mbo Mpenza.

I struggle to remember any of Rooney's 33 England goals, same for Lampard's 27 England goals. But I can remember quite a few of Owen's 40, Platt's 27, and Lineker's 48.

Belgium play 4-3-3 with two wingers, so just one central striker. Welbeck wouldn't get ahead of either Benteke or Lukaku for that role, and I think even Mirallas would get a shot there ahead of him.

I can see the arguments for Benteke/Lukaku being better than Welbeck.

But Mirallas? Come on. I don't know Belgium's system properly but I would play Welbeck alongside Benteke assuming it's two forwards.

Croatia at Euro 2004 are the ones I remember.

I'm not going to enter the conversation about Mirallas v Welbeck because I'm biased and to me it seems totally ridiculous that Welbeck could be better.

8 in 3.5 years isn't so bad, considering he's been injured for c.1/4 of the games and has been supported by a menagerie of average players.

Benzema hasn't scored in 10 games for France - there's a guy who needs dropping.

Trebs, as I said above, Belgium play 1 striker supported by two traditional wingers (currently Hazard and Mertens). We've played like this for several years now, back to the days of Wesley Sonck in fact!

If Benteke and Lukaku were unavailable, I'd fully expect Marc Wilmots to select Mirallas at ST ahead of Welbeck, were he Belgian. Both have pace, but Mirallas is a better finisher, more composed when under pressure, and has better tactical nous in the final third.

I'm not slagging Welbeck btw, he's still a good player, but there are plenty of better ones for England, Belgium and United to utilise.

Fair enough on Rooney. Its the tournament performances that disappoint. I said on Welbeck that he is decent and amongst the best we have. i just think we need better

Don't forget that Mirallas can actually run with the ball under control at pace. Welbeck rarely appears to have control over the ball, and you often he doesn't really know what is going to happen next.

Wilmots would probably play Fellaini up front before selecting Welbeck

Welbeck, graft? Serious? I've not seen him 'graft' ever. Run around, yes. But 'graft', as I'd want a 'grafter' to do? Not the guy.

A grafter needs to hassle the opposition, make them make mistakes, hound the defence, never stop running, drop back to chase the game, win possession. Rooney is a great grafter. Albion have Shane Long, who's made a career of grafting. Welbeck strikes me as the guy your grafter gives the ball to once he's won it back.

May be worth pointing out Welbeck has outscored both Benteke and Lukaku playing for their national sides.

Also take it you haven't seen some of the games where Rooney was out and Welbeck replaced him. He put in some terrific performances, one against Liverpool sticks out for me.
